He was using Tom Cruise as an example. Yes its logical if you really think about it. Toms ego is dependant on some sort of self fulfilment that others may deem weird.
He needs a crutch that many others don't care about. I don't blame his childhood entirely he's a very confident individual. He has other issues he can't deal with one being his dyslexia another his fame. He needs constant affirmation that he is this awesome person the top of his game and has the pretty little young wife on the arm as a trophy. All signs of deep insecurity that Im afraid Scientology will not remedy for him but will rather fuel his ills. His childhood was not unlike many other perfectly sane and ordinary people. His inabilities and fears are the factor he has never really truthfully confronted. I doubt he knows himself very well or has had a good look at what makes him who he is and who the public now think he is.

It's a big assumption that Dr. Pinsky made his comments about Cruise purely for "self serving" reasons, as your article suggests. Having been involved in hundreds of interview situations myself, I'm pretty sure that the interviewer will have initiated the discussion about celebrity behavior, or at least a related topic that lead to the discussion. Once the topic is broached, Cruise is an obvious example to use as he does little to hide his bizarre behavior from public eyes. Criticism of Pinsky's "inappropriate" comment is purely a sycophantic move on your behalf.
