Travis Barker and DJ AM survive plane crash - critical

Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein, aka DJ AM, are listed in critical but stable condition after surviving a plane crash that took the lives of the two pilots and two passengers.  The crash occurred shortly before midnight Friday when their Learjet crashed through a perimeter fence and traveled across a multiple lane roadway shortly after it started down the runway for take off from Columbia, South Carolina enroute to Van Nuys, California.

Ground controllers saw sparks on the runway and very shortly the out of control plane was fully engulfed.  Early NTSB speculation is that a blown tire may have been been the catalyst that caused the fire and crash.  Witnesses saw Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein running around outside of the plane, trying to remove their burning clothing.  A hospital spokesperson reported that both men have suffered extensive burns.

Killed were pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills; co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, California; passenger Chris Baker, 29, Travis Barker’s personal assistant of Studio City, California and passenger Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles, who was a security guard for the musicians.

Barker and Goldstein had played at a huge free outdoor concert prior to the accident under the name TRVSDJ-AM.  The crash caused the closing of the airport until late Saturday afternoon.

Barker’s ex-wife and mother of their children Landon and Alabama, Shanna Moakler, immediately flew to Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia to be at Travis’ bedside.  Her mother flew to L.A. to take care of their children, who were temporarily in the care of others.

NTSB personnel are on the scene doing their investigation, including checks of what the flight and maintenance crew did for 72 hours prior to the start of the flight.

The jet was owned by California based charter company Exec Aviation.

SUNDAY MEDICAL UPDATE:

Dr. Fred Mullins said in a press conference in Augusta, Georgia that such burns as suffered by Barker and Goldstein can take up to a year of recovery time.  According to Mullins, 45 percent of all burn patients have some emotional trouble.  Regarding their prognosis, the physician said:

“Since both Barker and Goldstein are in overall good health and didn’t suffer from any other crash related complications, a full recovery is expected.”

Barker was burned on his torso and lower body, while DJ AM was burned on his arms and a portion of his head.  Both remain in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of the burn center.
