David Letterman Rants About John McCain Cancellation (Video)

david letterman’s john mccain rant

David Letterman seemed a tad upset about John McCain’s last minute cancellation so he could return to Washington to work on the economic crisis.

“This doesn’t smell right,” Letterman quipped. “This is not the way a tested hero behaves. Somebody’s putting something in his Metamucil.”

The late night host’s rant didn’t end with the opening monologue. When MSNBC host Keith Olbermann took the couch, Letterman learned McCain was getting ready for an interview with CBS new anchor Katie Couric at the very moment he was supposed to be taping the show with him.

With a live feed from Couric’s interview on the screen, Letterman said,  “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport.”

After listening to some questions from Couric, Letterman said, “Hey, John, I’ve got a question: You need a lift to the airport?”

Asking Olbermann if he thought this was all McCain’s fault, or whether other factors had come into play, the MSNBC host replied, “I think he ditched you.”

  1. LEADERSHIP VS. SELF INTEREST …
Our country is facing the worst economic disaster since the great depression.
    Even Obama says so.
It’s the responsibility of the Senate to come up with an answer.
The answer has to be decided in a few days.
The answer will dramatically affect Americans for generations to come.
McCain, Obama, and Binden are all U.S. Senators.
Throughout the campaign, Obama has turned down the chance for 10 townhall debates.
… and now, Obama refuses McCain’s request that they both postpone the debate to work
on the economic recovery package … and Obama declines, in order to campaign??? … and, another biased celebrity, David Letterman, who has constantly been making insulting jokes about McCain, while coddling Obama, is upset. I think the facts speak for themselves …

  2. That’s “dissed you,” not “ditched you.”

  3. @Gina: “The answer has to be decided in a few days.” Says who, the people who got us into this mess (and many, many others), the same people who up until a week ago said, “The fundamentals of our economy remain strong”? And you believe them? Hey, I’ve got a bridge to sell you….

As for McCain suddenly wanting to cut and run from a scheduled debate to “fix this crisis”: 1) are you saying he can’t walk and chew gum at the same time? The President of the United States will need to handle more than one issue at a time. 2) in the last two years, he couldn’t be bothered to attend a single committee hearing on Afghanistan, where our soldiers are fighting and dying, and now he’s suddenly going to show up and save the day for an economic crisis in which his campaign advisor Phil Gramm was directly responsible?

Indeed, as you say, the facts speak for themselves.

  4. The facts are House Republicans are holding the package hostage.
The facts are that compromise takes time.
The facts are that yesterday’s McCain-induced photo op session took 3 hours out of House/Senate negotiating. For a meeting that was unproductive, unscheduled, and useless.
The fact is, I wanted McCain because I thought he was different from Bush.
The fact is, you are an idiot if you vote for McCain after seeing who he picked for VP, how he screwed up the negotiating process already occurring, and watching him run his scared ass away from debating a unifying leader.

  5. Dave enough with the cheap rants. Why don’t you and Jay take a time out, like BOTH candidates did, and work on a Comedy Stimulus/Recovery Package. You’re both stale.

  6. Forget the town hall meetings. McCain only made the offer because he knows Obama cannot take him up on it. Why? Because if Obama agrees to it, it makes him look willing to play into McCain’s suggestions. That is a slippery slope. It is just a “I double dare you” situation, and it is smart for Obama to just ignore it.
