Joe Wurzelbacher aka Joe the Plumber Speaks Out After Debate (Video)

Joe Wurzelbacher from Toledo, Ohio — immortalized as “Joe the Plumber” after last night’s presidential debate, talked with Katie Couric and explained how it was he came to meet Barack Obama.

“Obama came to my neighborhood and my son and I were outside tossing the football, and all of a sudden he showed up, and there went our football tossing for a while. And, you know, neighbors were outside asking him questions, and I didn’t think they were asking him tough enough questions, so I thought, you know, I’ll go over there. You know, I’ve always wanted to ask one of these guys a question and really corner them and get them to answer a question of–for once instead of tap dancing around it. And unfortunately I asked the question but I still got a tap dance. Do you – almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”

After that fateful meeting, Wurzelbacher was invited on to Fox News to discuss his conversation with the Democratic candidate.

During the encounter in Ohio, Wurzelbacher asked the Illinois senator: “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?”

Obama answered: “It’s not that I want to punish your success; I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you that they’ve got a chance to success, too. I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

“His answer actually scared me even more,” the plumber told Fox News.

“Robin Hood stole from greedy rich people and redistributed it to the peasants, so to speak, so if he’s calling us peasants, I kind of resent that,” he said.

“He said he wants to distribute wealth. And I mean, I’m not trying to make statements here, but, I mean, that’s kind of a socialist viewpoint. You know, I work for that. You know, it’s my discretion who I want to give my money to, it’s not for the government to decide that I make a little too much and so I need to share it with other people. I just — that’s not the American Dream.”

He added that the American Dream for him was “you work hard. You’re going to get what you want eventually.”

After the debate, Wurzelbacher repeated his complaints, telling Couric, “Obama speaks well, but the one thing that’s really important, that everyone in America really need to know is, you know, talk is talk. You know, he can speak pretty, but, you know, there’s got to be action behind it. We’ve seen McCain, we know his actions. Even if you disagree with him, at least you know where he stands. McCain – or Obama, we’re not sure where he stands yet, even after his debates. Like I said, he speaks eloquently, better than I do, but I honestly, I still don’t know where he stands. He’s said a lot, but none of his experience has backed it up. You know, the only experience I’ve seen or his actions are raising our taxes, so, you know, I’m middle class. I can’t have my taxes raised anymore.”

  1. Maybe we should all vote for Joe!

  2. Actually I thought it was a fair question from Joe, and a good answer from Barak.

Worth watching the video of the actual exchange…

  3. Joe asked a great question. But considering himself ‘middle class’ if he owns a business making himself $250,000 a year is a joke. I read alot on this on cnn.com and foxnews.com, so he asshole Joe my husband works hard and doesn’t make that much why isn’t it fair we get a tax break and you don’t so we could have the money to pay for YOUR services. If we don’t get that tax break, we’re going to fix our toilet ourselves, and you won’t get my money. Then I’ll see you in the welfare office next to me in line.

  4. From Subterranean Signals:

Joe the Plumber is Joe Wurzelbacher. There is a Jan Wurzelbacher associated with a Joe and the address with the building I have pictured below. Earlier tonight I called the number associated with that address and the name Wurzelbacher Bros. and the machine message made no mention at all of any business.

Now to the Keating connection. As mentioned in a previous post the name Wurzelbacher is fairly uncommon so it’s not hard to track down potential connections just using geography and ages to make the likely connections. There is a Robert Wurzelbacher who died in 2004 (possibly deceased is more accurate) who is in the same area and is of an appropriate age to be a parent or uncle to Joe who according to reunion.com is 33. This Robert Wurzelbacher not only had a history of campaign contributions to republicans but is implicated in the Keating Five scandal. The full text of the article relating to this is below. There are other Wurzelbacher contributions to McCain and other republicans in other parts of the country. We are looking into those now. With the confirmation of the last name and the limit number of family members this looks very bad. There is also no such plumbing business listed or advertising and the number I called (I only called one so as not to disturb at a home number late at night) makes no effort to tell you that you have reached a business. This is looking very, very much like an act.

  5. I think Joe is hot, how do we get in touch with him????

  6. Neither Wurzelbacher nor his employer are licensed plumbers. An official at Local 50 of the plumber’s union, based in Toledo, said Mr. Wurzelbacher does not hold a license.

  7. Joe the Plumber is a Nazi Skinhead. And now Joe’s schoolmates are coming out and verifying the fact.

His comportment, his appearance, his smoldering sullenness, his contemptuous racist code words describing Obama as tap dancing better than Sammy Davis Jr…. His alpha male posture confronting a presidential candidate. McCain should have vetted this guy. But then again, anyone who would have nominated Sarah Palin (or Uncle Woman, as I prefer to call her) can’t be expected to do anything right, let alone be President.

  8. Only reason I logged on today was to see if anyone else picked up on the subtle signs that Joe the Plumber might be a skinhead. I guess I was not the only one who suspected it almost immediately.

  9. My name is really Joe and I have a real issue for Obama and McCain.
The US Consulate General in SYdney will not let me Australian wife come visit me for Thanksgiving!

  10. This whole story is very new to me, but whether this man is what he says he is or not, he had a genuine concern about Obama’s socialist tax policies that many Americans share – and they are not nazi skin heads or some other undesirable, but normal American people.

I actually find it frightening that if a person asks a pointed question to a political candidate, who is supposed to be campaigning to be a voice of the people – not an untouchable demigod, they are savaged the way this man seems to be. If anyone revealed himself to be dangerous to the dreams of American people and threatening to the American dream, it was Mr. Obama.

The truth is, he has been very slick and obtuse and the election is very near. All the glitter, spectacle and celebrity endorsements aside, people want clear answers from the candidate so they can make an informed decision.

  11. Elana, here’s the Obama plan. Make $250K or less in revenue per year – your tax rate is 36% or less. If you make over $250K per year – your rate will be 39% on the amount above the $250K. This is what Mr. Obama told Mr. Plumber. If Mr. Plumber couldn’t understand this, then he needs to vote for Mr. Obama so he could possibly take advantage of Obama’s Educational Plan that will make Mr. Plumber smarter.

  12. Joe the plumber is the biggest asshole in the United States today, he’s a complete bullshitter (doesn’t have a license, the business he’s “buying” isn’t worth 250k and wouldn’t be affected by Obama’s policy). Joe Wurzelbacher you are worthless you piece of human trash!

  13. Yeah, his (Obama’s) answer was to “Spread the wealth”. In other words, take from those who make more money than the next guy and give it to those that don’t even pay taxes in government handouts. After all how do you give 95% of the population a tax cut when 45% or so pay NO income tax?
By BG on Oct 21, 2008
I agree with BG, why spread the wealth? Instead, we should focus the wealth on just a few people. In fact, I probably don’t work hard enough myself with my 40 hour a week maintenance job, where I get very dirty and physically exhausted. I should probably have to get a second job so I can give some CEO another 100 million bonus so he can buy one of those nice little carribean islands. At least my second job would pay for a CEO’s daily manicure, wouldn’t want them to have rough hands like mine. Funny thing is when it comes to taxes, people like BG are kind of ignorant. Those people that pay the highest percentage of taxes are those salary workers making under $109,000 a year. Most people forget that those that make more than $109,000 no longer have to pay the 8% social security tax. I may be in a lower tax bracket myself, but all my income has the social security surcharge. BG also forgets about all the hidden taxes regular woking guys pay. This trillion dollar bailout of the crook CEO’s will make every American’s money effectively worth less. The Rich also get many other tax breaks; first they don’t pay sales tax on many of the items they buy, like company stock or real estate. Everything I buy is taxed heavily which gives me much less effective buying power. If I start with a dollar, pay 25% income tax, 8% social security tax, I now have 67 cents left; with that 67 cents I can buy an item priced at 62 cents becuase of 8% sales tax. So you see the $35,000/year average worker is actually effectily in a 38% tax bracket, paying more percentage taxes than the Millionare with a maximum tax bracket of 35%. But lets face it, most conservatives probably don’t understand this, and sadly belittle those that worked hard at being educated. Rush Limbaugh is famous for insulting those that educate themselves by calling people intellectual elitists. He likes to say his listeners are so smart, but this is just a tactic to get listeners to believe what he says, after all if you believe him that makes you smart. Remember his calls are heavily screened, so the majority of ignorant Republicans don’t make fools of themselves on the radio. BG, however, can make a fool of himself on Blogs like this. I just hope BG doesn’t miss his manicure appointment responding to me. Although before BG and others like him pop off, they should get a real job like mine and understand what a real days work is about. And when it comes to handouts, seems to me it’s the Guys at the top with their hands out, WTF? a 700 billion dollar bailout with more coming. These CEO’s are also the most unpatriotic Americans; ready to take your job away the first chance they can by finding some poor schmuck in a foriegn land, that because of brutal goverments and slavemasters, will work for nothing. In closing, I just want to say if I was making lots of money, I wouldn’t be such a big crybaby about paying some taxes, after all, don’t those taxes go to pay for roads and education that the people that are making me rich need to continue to make me rich? I’m just saying……

PS. BG is probably really BJ, These guys that bend over for the Rich and think the Rich are Gods, giving the poor little working guy life, make me sick.
