A McCain campaign volunteer was attacked and mutilated while being robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield, near Pittsburgh last night. The attacker carved a “B” into the 20-year-old woman’s face after noticing McCain bumper stickers on her car.
Pittsburgh news stations and newspapers are reporting that Ashley Todd, from College Station, Texas, was withdrawing money from an ATM around 9pm Wednesday after leaving a Republican phone bank, when she was approached by “a dark-skinned African-American man about 6′4″, who held a knife at her throat.
The suspect stole $60 from Todd and became enraged when he saw the McCain stickers on her car, saying, ‘Oh you’re with McCain, you’re with the McCain campaign? I’m going to teach you a lesson.’”
After repeatedly hitting, kicking and threatening the young woman, the suspect then carved a “B” in her cheek for “Barack” Obama.
Todd is in Pittsburgh volunteering for the McCain-Palin campaign. A spokesperson for the campaign says that Senator McCain and Governor Palin have both spoken to Todd.
This is just the latest in an increasing number of violent incidents across the country by Obama supporters.
The Obama-Biden campaign released a statement saying “Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”
It seems no one is pointing out the fact that the “B” carved into her cheek is backward, leading me to speculate that just maybe she did this to herself while looking in a mirror? Of course the attacker may have been at her head, facing her feet, but it doesn’t help her case that she refused medical treatment and the attack happened away from the surveillance cameras. I truly hope I’m wrong on this, but I’m just sayin’…

What happens now: The Obama team dispatches attorneys in Pittsburgh and Texas to investigate the background of the woman who is accusing the Obama supporter of this alleged assault. The investigative team will check her driving, banking, and court records to determine whether she was legally licensed to drive or has ever before accused someone of attacking her without videotaped evidence. They will dig into her dating history and family background, whether anyone has ever made disparaging remarks about Obama, Democrats, or minorities. The appropriate “reporter,” “columnist,” or “high-profile blogger” will be fed the talking points for publication just before they go out in an email, txt, and fax broadcast to the usual Obama mouthpieces. After 12 hours this woman’s word will be dirt and we will be looking for her accomplice in the staged attack.

How sickening for you to suggest that a young woman would do that to herself. I am disgusted.
Regardless of who did this horrible thing to her, they should be punished. Differences in political opinion or affiliation should never be settled by violence.

From the perspective of a Pittsburgh local, this looks like more race-baiting from the GOP:
IF it is true, I feel sorry for her – no one deserves that to happen. However, my gut says her story is way too elaborate to be true – maybe a product of an overactive imagination (i.e. after he robbed her he happened to notice her bumper sticker and decided to get political?!) Having been the victim of a violent crime, I know that people who attack and rob have two objectives: 1) Steal whatever they can 2) Get away as soon as possible. No one who steals would take the time to carve letters in a vicim’s face. Additionally, how can anyone not find it suspicious that the letter is backwards as if done looking into a mirror? It saddens me that people get this political that they have to do something like this to incite sympathy for one party and hate for another. If she is lying, I hope the local authorities punish her (and McCain/Palin “repudiates” her). If she is actually is telling the truth, then I hope she has the help and support to recover from something that can be damaging for life.
If this is staged then thats not good and actually quite sad. However, I’m not surprised that cars that have a bumper stickers that support McCain are attacked in some form or another. I think that most Obama supporters take all their failures in life and somehow transend them into their anger, hate and frustations and vote for Obama who promises them things he can not give. Sadly Obama hangs out with far far left radicals. Those radicals did not stop to bomb a judges home and other terrorist crimes in the 60s & 70s. Something the media will not report. If Obamas friends are terrorists and bigots (Ayers & Wright) why wouldn’t his supporters be as well? …just a thought.

Obviously she was attacked, but I think her zeal for the campaign led her to try to “make some meaning” out of her personal tragedy by blaming it on an Obama supporter. Along with the inconsistencies in her story which the police are suspicious about, the fact that the “B” was backwards does seem to indicate that she was looking in a mirror when she scratched it into her face. It also does not look like it was done by a knife, as she claims.
Sorry, but I think this is going to turn out to be another strike against the Republicans for their do anything, say anything lack of morality when it comes to “winning.”

No way. The location she claims this happened is a lively area with many restaurants and bars. At 9PM – someone would have seen this. Pearl and Liberty in Bloomfield is not “the wrong side of town” – it’s a charming old “Italian” neighborhood, which has experienced some pretty significant rejuvenation in the last 10 years. 2 of our favorite dining establishments are in that very block. The one – a steakhouse – Tessaro’s is a Pittsburgh legend (with by the way, a mostly “white” clientele – I only add that after reading the description of her supposed attacker to note that it is an area much inhabited by all) and the streets around this area are generally busy until later at night. No way this happened at this location without anyone seeing it.
Well, its been confirmed that she did make it up: i hope the media give the real story as much attention.

Stating that that is what she is *claiming* would have been much more accurate. Esp. given that it is now clear it was a hoax. No, I don’t feel like an idiot for feeling shock and compassion for an injured young woman as a gut reaction rather than callous cynicism. So many times people scapegoat an already traumatized victim by not believing them. It’s easier that way. Check out the movie ‘Changeling’ to see an example of this.
I am very shocked and saddened however to learn how the story developed and that this young woman lied the way she did. It is very disturbing. This is a very ugly election.
