Wendy Button: Obama Speechwriter Switches to McCain…Wait, what?

 Wendy Button with John Edwards

Wendy Button, a speechwriter for John Edwards, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, has apparently seen the light to hear her tell it.  She has written political speeches for over ten years and has always believed in the Democratic Party.  All that has suddenly changed but it likely won’t resonate with the mainstream media.

Her post, So Long Democrats, is lengthy and windy but her points are easy enough to dissect:

John Edwards fall from grace hit her hard.

Not only has the Democratic party belittled working people in this campaign, it has also been part of tearing down two female candidates.  The treatment of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin is unforgivable according to Button.  They stooped so low as to go after Clinton’s cleavage and Palin’s wardrobe.

She admits that she was dead wrong about the troop surge and thought it would be a disaster.  She believes John McCain led when many were ready to quit.

The ‘hooker lines’ that she was paid to write were all posturing, a charade and a political game.  The media scribbled down the one liners as if that was the essence of the message, when in fact it was the fluff.

The mocking of Joe the Plumber was one of the final straws.  She didn’t leave the Democratic Party, but rather the Democratic Party left her.

Some bloggers are suggesting that you won’t hear much about this story among the talking heads of the mainstream media.  They believe that had she been a Republican speechwriter who was suddenly swayed by Democrat Barack Obama, it would have played in every living room in America.    They are suggesting media bias.  You be the judge.

  1. Ms. Button appears to be confusing Democrats with the media and even regular voters. Most of the derision of Palin has not come from the Democratic party but from the media who Palin shunned and regular voters who see her largely for the fraud she is. We see this joke of a “regular guy” Joe the Plumber for what he is, a fake, a prop utilized by the McCain campaign to drive a wedge between the people of this country. When Ms. Button complains that the Democrats focused on Hillary’s cleavage, that was the media, not Democrats. When she complains Democrats treat Palin unfairly, they treated her like any other politician of the opposing party, but Button seems to think she should have been treated with kid gloves and given the benefit of the doubt when other politicians aren’t given such leeway. She obviously didn’t understand the purpose of the surge nor why the political changes that have occurred in Iraq were not the result of the surge in troops, but a myriad of other factors including the US paying off insurgents, the British troops leaving and ethnic cleansing to name a few.

  2. Media bias is the giant elephant (no pun intended) in the room. 86% of Americans believe the media is biased towards Obama. He’s a paper tiger, an empty vessel. Good for Wendy Button for waking up!

  3. Well, her article is certainly boring and I’d like to see what speeches she actually wrote for Obama or Clinton. Seems she worked for Edwards most and he didn’t win, plus it does seem he’s somewhat of a cad. Saying the Obama campaign is sexist is ludicrous. But, to add that Palin was treated sexist when Palin herself is sexist (winky winky, high black boots, high fashion and a red jacket, showing legs) and a woman who is unqualified who did herself in is beyond the pale. I’m a woman BTW and I never supported Hillary because she was too conservative and ran a dirty campaign just like McCain and Palin.

  4. You probably won’t read it in the MSM because it’s not news.

And to call the Democratic party dirtier than the Republican party is laughable.

AND to whine about writing “hooker lines” – please. That is what we get paid for. She was probably bribed by the McCain campaign so that their ticket isn’t the only one in-fighting.

  5. Jalisa, where do you get this figure of 86% of American’s believing the media is biased towards Obama. Lets not forget, McCain is the one who’s referred to the media as “his base”. He’s the one who had them over at his Sedona ranch for a weekend BBQ. He’s the one who the media boosts with this fake maverick label. Heck, Liz Sidoti from the AP gave the guy donuts as a gift just a few months ago! Obama has certainly garnered a lot of media coverage, but that’s because one, he’s newer on the scene than McCain, two he’s winning and three, each month he focuses on an aspect of his policy proposals while McCain just recycles the same petty divisive crap we’ve been fed from the Bush administration since 2000. Obama actually provides news to cover.

  6. Did you guys actually read Wendy’s essay? There’s no way she went from supporting the plight of the poor and ending the war in Iraq to supporting McCain/Palin and their anti-progressive policies. Read the article…all of it. Buried deep within you’ll find this: “Before I cast my vote, I will correct my party affiliation and change it to No Party or Independent. Then, in the spirit of election 2008, I’ll get a manicure, pedicure, and my hair done. Might as well look pretty when I am unemployed in a city swimming with “D’s.” And also, “Whatever inspiration I had in Chapel Hill two years ago is gone. When people say how excited they are about this election, I can now say, “Maybe for you. But I lost my home.” —Translation: she’s lost her job and her home. So this essay gets her some attention and maybe a job in wingnut land. Sheesh!

  7. Wow, Wendy Buttons, a speech writer switches on Obama. Well, it seems she actually was a speech writer for Democrats, not just Obama. And, in truth speech writers don’t set policy, they merely write the words to help sell the policies. And, speech writers are not generally considered experts on the subjects they write about. And, she seems more like a PUMA than a supporter who ever supported Obama in the first place.

When you have dozens of political commentators and party faithful leaving McCain for Obama, any one speech writer for the “Democrats” who never was an Obama supporter doesn’t seem like much of a story.

What is her complaint, Obama is sexist? Does she think that McCain has treated Palin fairly? That he’s against Joe the plumber? It wasn’t Obama that turned Joe the plumber into a cheap party trick?

    The story is completely nonsensical.

  8. Wendy Buttons is getting the same treatment from this site and some of her detractors that validates her article. Democrats have sunk to levels they only labeled Republicans with in the past. It’s making the label “Independent” a badge of honor! OH, speechwriters must have some power with the candidates…they are always credited when they get to cable news/pundent shows.

  9. Let’s see, Wendy Button, who was a sort of generic Democratic writer, for ten years, decides McCain is the savior of America. That the Obama camp is less sensitive to women’s issues than McCain? That they were not nice to Joe ye Plumber? Uh, what? First, the timing. Not by accident. Second, the reasons. Huh? The GOP is to women’s rights what George Wallace was to civil rights; that is, NOT. And Palin, the VP and potential prez, thinks that rape victims should pay for their own rape kits. What is that? Maybe I’m missing something. I think Wendy is pulling a fast one. How about some closer scrutiny on her and her motives.

  10. Mr. Teter: if Ms. Button decided to go public like this and toss a wrench into Obama’s campaign, then she is fair game, my friend. Nothing to do with independent voters or anything else…her article being validated by people’s outrage is not a logical connection. It is an emotional reaction on your part. She knew full well that this would come under the magnifying glass. When you throw a haymaker at someone, then you’d best be prepared to duck. What exactly did you want people to say about this? That she wrote a sensible, worthwhile piece of prose? Nope. It was a last minute hatchet job. Done to deep-six Obama. And a joke as far as the subjects I raised.

  11. am not surprised to read the responses to this post. Typical liberal blindness.

  12. Wow, the dems on here just confirm what she said. The attacks on Joe, the attacks on Palin because she doesn’t believe children should be murdured for convienienced. And the idea the dems and the Obama campaign support the poor and equal pay for women is laughable. The payment of women on McCain’s staff for women is more equal to their male counterparts than Obamas. Obama himself has mocked the middle class. Obama tries to make people jealous of those who have been successful, and will kill jobs by his tax plans. His lack of support for the troops is appalling.

Heaven forbid a man ask him a question. Look at the downright Gestapo style tactics unleashed on Joe for daring to question the Fuhrur.

    Good for this woman.

One thing I will say if Obama gets elected. The Dems won’t have anyone to blame when he totally sucks as a president, which he will. The only thing I look forward to about him is the chance to say “I told you so” for four years. But what do I know, I am a bitter gun owning christian who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
