12 Year Old Boy Shot and Killed While Trick-or-Treating
22-year-old Quentin Patrick of Sumter, South Carolina, has been charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill after opening fire on a 12-year-old boy and his family while they were trick-or-treating.
The family was heading home from a city sponsored event downtown and decided to stop at a few homes along the way to trick-or-treat.
The father and his four children approached a home with the porch light on around 8:30 p.m. while their mother waited in the car. While standing at the door the family thought they heard fireworks.
The 12-year-old boy, his father, and one of his brothers were hit by gunfire from inside the house. The boy died at the hospital, while his father and brother were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting suspect, Quentin Patrick, is in police custody. Although there were other people inside the home at the time of the shooting, Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said she didn’t expect any of them to be charged.
“The investigation is continuing into what has been a very tragic evening,” Patterson said. “Our sorrow and sympathy goes out to this family.”
Authorities have not released the identities of the family.
No further details about the shooting are available at this time.

I PERSONALLY KNOW HIM! AND HE HAS BEEN ROBBED THREE TIMES ALREADY AND JUST GOT IN A FIGHT EARLIER THAT DAY. IF ANYTHING HE WAS SCARED OUT HIS MIND OF WHAT HE THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT. AND HIS 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS IN THE HOUSE WITH HIM AND IM PRETTY SURE HE DIDN’T WANT TO PUT HER LIFE IN DANGER. I AM IN NO WAY COMMENDING HIM ON ANYTHING HE HAS DONE BUT I THINK PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION BEFORE THEY EVEN JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS. HE MAY HAVE BEEN DRUNK OR HIGH BUT THAT DOESN’T MAKE IT OK. AND WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO “WHOSE THERE?”, OR LOOKING THROUGH THE PEEP HOLE. YES I THINK THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED OUT A HECK OF A LOT BETTER AND THEREFORE WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS SITUATION TODAY BUT THINGS HAPPEN AND THATS SOMETHING HE HAS TO LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. NOT ANYONE ELSE BUT HIM! THE CHIEF OF POLICE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO ASK FOR THE DEATH PENATLY FOR HIM WHICH I FEEL IS TRULY WRONG. SHE’S JUST AS WRONG AS HIM JUST FOR ASKING FOR THAT. TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT. AND I WOULD FEEL THE SAME WAY IF THAT WAS MY SON WHO GOT KILLED. KILLING THE SHOOTER IS NOT GOING TO MAKE MY SON COME BACK!
