David Plouffe: Obama Campaign Manager (Photos)

David Plouffe

David Plouffe, 41, was raised in Wilmington, Delaware.   He was a political science major at the University of Delaware from 1985-1988, a semester short of graduating when he opted for a career in politics.  He went to work for Senator Tom Harkin’s 1990 reelection campaign and was state field director for Harkin’s unsuccessful 1992 presidential bid.

From 1997-1998 he served as Democratic leader Dick Gephardt’s Deputy Chief of Staff.   From 1999-2000 he was the executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, raising $95 million for House races across the country.

In 2000 he joined AKP&D Message and Media and become a partner in 2004.  It was from here that he and a fellow partner, David Axelrod were tapped to work with Barack Obama on his 2004 Illinois Senate campaign.  The association continued and Plouffe is credited with Obama’s successful overall strategy in the 2008 presidential race.

Plouffe was credited with maintaining discipline over communications in the campaign, controlling leaks and releasing information.  No publicity hound, he was successful at holding things in check while managing to avoid the publicly aired squabbles that frequently plague other campaigns, including McCain’s.

In his acceptance speech, Obama said: “To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics – you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve sacrificed to get it done.”

Plouffe and his wife have a young son and are expecting a second child at any moment.  The new baby was due on election day.

Will there be a place in the Obama White House for Plouffe?  Very likely.

  6. Hi David,

I am interested in discussing options around having yourself, or someone from the campaign speak at a conference event in April next year about the role of Mobile Marketing in the Obama 2008 campaign.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards

  7. Mr. Plouffe –

I am one organizer of a group called Grassroots for Change up here in Canada.
the Centre / Left up here lost the last election to Stephen Harper – who we refer to as Bush-Lite!
With the bit in his teeth – and only with a minority government – Harper last Thrusday – through his Finance minister – unveiled a naked and disgusting attack on Democracy and the defeated Centre Left Opposition parties collectively.
All this made some of Karl Rove’s machinations seem almost civilized by comparison!
It was enough to finally provoke the fractured Centre / Left to begin discussions of a formal coalition – since we do have the mechanisms to dump this minority government – providing the coalition can convince the authorities (in this case called the Governor General representing the Crown).
We were in the process of putting together plans to learn from your successes and build our own solutions (I am in the technical team doing this) but this crisis has accelerated our time lines.
Is there someone you can point us to that can advise us on this?
[I spent a good deal of work in support of someone who calls himself Hollywood Charles on Myspace - part of your information distribution hierarchy. I was hoping Charles (who claims to have been with Sen. Obama for the last 3 years) might have facilitated this - but he has thus far not come through]
Any help would be appreciated. I am in regular touch with Doug Ferguson (who I guess is our Howard Dean in all this) and we have Dr. Janine Kreiber (who is Stephane Dion’s spouse – I guess our Michelle Obama) in our group – so we have some credibility.
I look forward to hearing something from – if not you – at least someone that can help us put turbodrive into our efforts.

  8. I was wondering what it takes to qualify to work as a nurse providing health services in ur cabinet

  9. Congratulations to the first step of a great campaign. The balance sheet, however, is made in the end. World will see what counts. I’m from abroad, from Old Europe’s Germany ( proud of Rumsfeld’s label given), and I care primarily for your incredible Justice System catering The Prison Industrial Complex with highest prisoner rate since 25 years.
Your endeavors may be successful clearing the backlog – besides stabilizing bank and other economic gamblers.

  10. I’m with Jessica Young.

Where’s my T Shirt that I paid $30 for weeks ago?

It ticks me off when these campaign people sell this stuff at exorbitant prices and then don’t deliver.

C’mon guys, your making your man Barack look bad!

  11. I want to know how Mr. President Elect thinks it is ok to rent TWO million
dollar propeties in Hawaii for his holiday vacation (on for himself and one for thesecret service ) all the while Americans are losing their jobs, homes,
cannot buy groceries or pay bills but being asked to bail out THE BIG THREE,
AIG, the banks ,wall street etc….isn’t that a bit insensitive, inappropriate,
    extravagant???
