Steve LeVeille Off the Air at WBZ-AM 1030 (Photos)
If you’re looking for Steve LeVeille, overnight talk show host at WBZ-AM 1030 it appears you won’t find him there. He has been let go by the Boston area news radio station.
The radio jock has been doing the midnight to 5:00 a.m. Monday-Friday segment since 1999, covering political issues and current events. MediaBiz recently leaked news that LeVeille had gotten his pink slip along with Tom Cuddy, Pat Desmarais and Lovell Dyett, but their names and photos still appear on the station’s website so for now he appears to be a solo castoff.
A Boston native, LeVeille began his career in 1977 at WEEI Boston as a writer and producer. He also did stints with ABC News in New York as an assignment editor and writer and spent some career time at Monitor Radio.
In 1998 he won an Associated Press Massachusetts Broadcasters award for Best Sports Commentary for his work on WAAF Worchester.
LeVeille is a graduate of Emerson College and lives in Boston with his wife Diane.

My Mother is an avid listener and fan of WBZ and told me today she had heard in the wee hours of the morning (Jan. 2) some of her favorite on-air staff had been laid off – announced by one at the finality of the last live program. Of course, if you search WBZ’s webpage not a word of it can be found anywhere! Does this not make people think? If news which IS HAPPENING is not reported on the actual square footage on which news is BEING REPORTED is anyone wondering why? Who decides what takes precedence on the air-waves – is this a station of credibility – a ‘news-leader’? Oh it all makes me so tired! I was a reporter/newscaster in radio news for 17 years in Ontario Canada and went through several layoffs myself and they are ALL handled the same way! I wish people would just be aware that media is not to be believed as ‘GOSPEL’ even if they are award winners – no matter who they are and I wish there was more accountability.
I’m sorry for the good talent of Laveille, Cuddy, Desmarais and Dyett who will replaced by syndication. I hope listeners realize each time we lose a live person, we lose another connection to what’s happening in a more local, real sense. I’ve seen so much of it in Canada with increasing reliance on copy and syndication and continued loss of reporters.
All of this however, is leading to a very big THANK YOU to this site for providing much appreciated information today about these personalities who are held in very high esteem, that WBZ has neglected to provide its listeners with despite the fact it has happened within the walls of its very own station! Ironic but so very typical.
Kudos to you though. Many thanks.
I listened to Steve LaVeille and Lovell Dyett for years. They are two of the best. I heard the news last night because I tuned in to hear LaVeille’s ace stand-in for nights off , Morgan White. At the beginning of Morgan’s show, a woman called in to ask if what she had heard about Steve LaVeille being let go was true. She said she had seen a brief mention of this in a Boston paper that day and could Morgan confirm this. Pretty amazing considering that WBZ considers itself THE top news station and even the on-air host hadn’t heard anything about this until she called. Morgan is a true professional and a real nice guy. He had to work a full 5 hours on air, as it occured to all of us, that if Steve LaVeille was fired by the gutless wonders moments before New Year’s Eve, then in fact, there was a very real possibility that this would be Morgan’s last on-air show at WBZ, too. Talk about amazing radio. I don’t know how he did it. His sign off at 5AM was perfect. I hope that Laveille, Dyett and White know how much they’ve meant to so many. They are the real deal and we knew it. Will I listen to the syndicated replacement? No. They fired the on-air talent – this listener just quit. WBZ is now the 50,000 watt station with nothing on.
Morgan White was filling in Friday morning as Steve was on a regularly-scheduled holiday day off. About 15 minutes into the show, a called quoted Morgan an article from the Boston Herald reporting that Steve had been cut loose. Neither Morgan, nor Rob Brooks, Steve’s regular producer, were aware of the fact that they were riding herd on Steve’s last show.
The night was filled with disbelieving, shocked, and distraught callers. The final “Steve Leveille Broadcast” caller spot was reserved for Jenna Rosa (sp?), a lovely senior citizen from Peabody, Massachusetts, who always called in during the last half-hour of the Friday show, and said, “Friday Friday,” then went on to talk about what was going on at her church and why she was getting a permanent on Friday instead of her traditional Saturday appointment. She was everyone’s grandmother! There was the annual call from the woman on the Maryland eastern shore reporting on the return of the birds; there were the calls from the newpaper delivery people reporting on traffic delays and the price of gas throughout the WBZ listening area. There were daily updates on Max, Steve’s hypoallergenic cat. We kept up with Steve’s plans for spring training trips to Florida, opening the cabin in Maine, finding the paper in the driveway after a snow storm, listening to all-night restaurants deliver food to Steve and Rob. It’s live and local talk radio you can’t get from Rush or Sean or Art Bell. Now, it is gone, all in the name of cost-cutting. One million listeners have lost their voice because CBS had to cut $50,000 from the 2009 budget.
Ir is a sad day in Beantown. The management at
WBZ leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. A news station and they chose to blindside the listeners with
their silence with this important and disappointing news. As a listener to talk radio for many, many years, my radio has been silenced by a group of
folks who choose not to shoot straight.
I am shocked and saddened at the loss of Steve Leveille on WBZ. I have been a fan of the all night show for a long time. It is beyond me that the higher ups have no respect for him or his audience, which was most surely a family. It is beyond decency that there has been no explanation, no goodbyes, no celebration of a wonderful radio host. I was under the false impression that WBZ was special. A personal touch in an impersonal world. I shall miss Steve and all the wonderful characters that were a part of his show. Now that WBZ has shown it’s true colors, I will stop tuning in.
I was horrified to hear on Jordan’s show that Steve was let go! I have a pillow speaker, and have it on all night, and catch Steve as I drift in and out of sleep. I like his light touch, and it is so much better to sleep with a smile on my face!
I hope Steve will find another local station.
He (and Diane and Max) will be sadly missed!
I am sorely disappointed in WBZ’s knocking Steve off the air. He was the only one who could lull me into the night after a tough day. He balances common sense, folk humor, and political comments that are respectful of the opposition and tolerant of the crazies that occasionally interupt the air waves. His New England flavor is grounding and drew in a population that scanned 30 states AND Canada, if you please….HELL- oho?! What possible logic rules at WBZ? My buddies and I are in shock…!
Best of Luck to you, Steve, for happier hunting grounds – please stay on the
air!
It probably all comes down to money, but I think I speak for many listeners of WBZ radio when I say that syndicated radio is not anywhere as appealing to us as our local radio broadcasters. It’s a mistake. Certainly I will not be tuning in but will find something local to listen to. Steve and the others drew a lousy hand but I wish them all the best and thank them all for their years of service and entertainment.
It’s really a shame. I’m down in NJ but have been listening to Steve for quite a while because Philly radio has gone downhill. There are still some local hosts who are on earlier in the day, but mainly they emphasize right-leaning political talk. I enjoyed the variety of things Steve talked about, as well as his gentlemanly attitude. In that respect (and I mean this as my highest compliment) he reminded me of Bernie Herman, a host we had in Philly years ago.
This layoff and the way it was done is typical of big business.
One day you are here and the next day you are gone and
no one says anything. Where is the accountability in this
world. I had the same thing done to me. No one said a
word. It’s terrible. I will never listen to WBZ again. I so much
enjoyed all and the locals here in Boston. Who wants
to hear a syndicated show? We could emphathize with
Steve and the rest of the crew….the weather…..Steve’s cat,
the house in Maine, the stops for good food along the
way, the locals and not so locals who called in to say
hello.
All will be sorely missed and big business should be
ashamed of itself. Apparently in this world, no one
appreciates the people who do the work. It’s a
sad commentary on life.
I have been listening since Norm Nathan. I have reset my dial. Good luck with your new programing, but I won’t be there to hear it.
Steve’s show was different from any other local talk show. It really was a family of callers and listeners. I just don’t understand how WBZ can not see that. I leave for work at 3:45 A.M. and listen to Steve every morning on my way in. I then continue listening to ‘BZ for the rest of the morning. I guess I won’t be doing that anymore.
I can’t wait until Steve lands another gig. I only hope it is here in the Boston area,so ‘BZ’s overnight ratings can go down the toilet and the rest of the Steve Leveille radio family can continue listening on another station.
WBZ decision to drop Steve Leveille is beyond belief. Steve is the perfect radio talk show host and his show was fantastic. And, because of Steve, WBZ was the only station I could comfortably listen to in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. I loved the regular callers from the Boston area and the talk show topics. It was such pleasant listening when I couldn’t sleep that I lost even more sleep because I couldn’t stop listening. You’ve made a huge mistake. What a shabby way to treat someone who did such a great job! Goodbye WBZ. Count me as one of the loyal listeners who will never listen to WBZ again. Genarosa’s last “Friday, Friday” was heartbreaking.
The only thing WBZ did by removing Laveille is anger the loyal listeners and drive them all to listen to other stations. FOX sports network… Here I come.
Laurie, Al and Sharon-Thanks for taking the time to write about what happened to Steve LaVelle. I am shocked and saddened to know that he will no longer be working at WBZ. I don’t really listen to BZ during the day only in the evening. The big news station doesn’t have one single word about what happened to Steve.
I started listening when I was on maternity leave back in 1986. Gosh, I just love David. I grew to laugh out loud in bed listening to Norm-that sweet, sweet man. Then there was Paul. We have all loved these people and thank them for the moments of good cheer, inspiration and sometimes even a comforting thought or a moment of silent support for many a caller.
Now they go ahead and make their cuts at the radio station with no thought to Steve or his listeners. How can they treat Steve like that? What shabby treatment. Do you have to have a terminal illness before you treat your employees with respect? Shame on WBZ .
Steve will make a great comeback somewhere else. He’s a talented guy and much loved in Boston and elsewhere. Morgan White always worked so hard and did a fair amount of preparation when he was Steve’s Substitute. To have to learn about a colleague’s fate by way of a caller must have been tough for Morgan.
Please deluge the programmers at WBZ with your protests over the choice to get rid of Steve Leveille and go syndicate. They need to hear from the loyal fans.
Shame on you wbz….you have lost a faithful listener…so sad wbz had to follow in the footsteps of the “corporate world”…I would have thought such a station had more class.
I think the cat stuff finally got to management…I know I couldn’t take much more and Morgan and Tank were making fun of Steve and his cat…one week he talked about his newspaper all through his shows and that was tough..on the good side I cannot imagine radio without Mel Simon and Steve definitely had his good hours amongst the boring…he should have prepared more rather than winging it for five hours. He was no Jean Shepherd and certainly no Glick, but he was much better than Bob Raleigh and I will miss the local folks who called and added so much. Jordan Rich is a bore and too new age for me. However I did download some podcasts from Steve’s replacement and he will be good and loaded with special features that should please Steve’s audience. I listened to an interview Grayson (the replacement from St. Louis KMOX) did with Warren Zevon’s wife and he has a film critic and music critic on every week. So the new show will be good but not local and that hurts. WBZ is probably making a big mistake but time will tell…last night Kim Komando replaced Lovell and that was easy, she is much more interesting and relevant than Lovell, so there i am okay with their decision. I think Steve was done in by old Max. I know the women listeners thought Max was adorable but he made for bad radio . A little too saccharine for me and he made Steve sound like a loser with no life. Sorry fans, I loved Steve for his good times but hated the politics and Max the cat and Maine trips…I loved the Mel Simon and some of the silly themes he had for his show.
Dyett , lets face it: the token Black kept around for too long. His mentality is still in the 50s for CS.
Lavelle entertained the idiots of the world for too long–like 5 minutes into his first show no doubt
Thing to do is call Dan Rea show repeatedly and a Peter Casey at BuzzCut radio repeatedly
I dont mean once and take the bum rush they’ll give you
Demonstrating outside BuzzCut radio sta would help
Really help
Other tv stations would cover it depending on how loud you are
Anyone know where Peter Casey lives? We could go over there ala “Panic Room” movie-style
Get the drift?
Ah actually who cares if these stiffs arent airing
Pick yourself up, dust off the snow, head to the IHOP near the station, talk it over w/the current waitress of the month there and then call Dan Rea show repeatedly!
(Dan’s got to go too. B-o-r-i-n-g to the absol max, this lout)
Sharon above calles Morgan White an “ace” as in ace radio talk host?
Sharon do you have a pulse?
Morgan goes on the air tired and ends half asleep, the voice slows down bigtime
See, this is what is all wrong with radio.
The programming dynamic at WBZ aims toward the lonely, shut-ins, etc of the world who given what they hear is their prayer answered from heaven–they will listen to anything from anybody…the slightest comfort they get listening is all they need to stay 1 minute from using the razor on themselves
WBZ knows this all too well
If you witness listening to anyone talking for 3 minutes or longer on any show you know they are probably holding their phone while their eyes are closed and they are locked in this trance and words just keep coming out of their mouths–they want to get to the real feeling inside of them–that of desperation and loneliness but they cant quite get there–they need something else.
The misfit of the world that the rails in Germany/Poland didnt accomodate for are leftovers and the only way out of this is to reshape radio programming to competent, educated, non-desperate people and by the way: leave out the blue collar types who just jag and jag about nothing every time they call any radio station about anything.
And I havent even gotten into how mis informed people are in general.
Just get the blueberry nuts off the air–medical science can help them, not electricity provided to the station and out the antenna.
Radio at WBZ will never be the same.Loved all his sports info on the Red Sox and Patriots. He will be missed.
I have just changed my dial to WRKO. I cannot believe that after 30 some odd years listening to WBZ that they would have done such a thing. I just hope Steve will land a job on another station – I also feel bad for Generoza, she was so upset when she heard the news.Hopefully we will get him back.
Steve was great..loved his knowlege and interest in the Red Sox and Patriots..made Johnny Pesky day possible…Steve will be missed….
Great interest and knowlege of Red Sox..he made Johnny Pesky day a reality..steve will be missed by all the night owls……………
steve had great interest and knowlege of the Red Sox..made Johnny Pesky day a reality….congenial.. interesting,..great company for night owls..he will be missed
I was shocked to hear about Steve.. I listened to his show every night and looked forward to Sunday night for his return after his weekend. It will be difficult to find another one like Steve, But WBZ sure will not have me listening. any longer. Shame on BZ for doing to Steve and to us! I’m sure Steve will find someone who will apprecialte his talent and the family of listeners who so felt part of the show and will bring us all back together again!!
So long WBZ you are the loser!!!
50 years of listening to WBZ and now this ?
What a heartless thing to do to Steve/Lovell and Pat.
I grew up listening to Larry Glick, then Norm, then David and now Steve…but he’s gone and I can’t believe that WBZ would do such a thing.
We can only hope that WRKO snaps up Steve quickly. The Boston airwaves (and 38 states) need him back as soon as possible.
I’m disgusted with WBZ, just disgusted.
Hang in there Steve, good things will come your way.
To Tom Delay—-you are developmentally delayed. I guess you want a show like “Coast to Coast”. Are you living on another planet? You are projecting on Steve’s listenersyour own neuroses and sad lifestyle.
Steve you will be sorely missed. You have a style that is a perfect fit for late night listeners and early morning risers. WBZ has responded to listeners in the past.. I hope they have the wisdom to reconsider.
I like a lot of Steve’s faithful listeners will NOT be listening to the syndicated show that they are planning to air. Philadelphia Ann’s right we need to deluge the station with protests. BZ tried to do this to David in the 90’s and there was such an outcry from his listeners that they dumped the syndicated programming and David was back on BZ. Steve you will be missed.
Steve is a great talent. I loved his light topics and I loved his political shows. So refreshing not having to listen to another right wing wacko. I hope another Boston station will pick him up. I already miss him so much. I will not listen to the syndicated junk that WBZ is going to put on. Shame on WBZ.
I thought you guys had learned your lesson several years ago when you tried to replace David Brudnoy with a syndicated show. Shame on you..
How sad. How very sad! Steve was a gem. It was just last weekend that my wife and I were discussing the
homogenization of America and I remarked that I thought mass-media was in part responsible for the dissapearence of regional character. Tonight I tune in to hear Steve and wham… how ironic. I live in Delaware and one of my hobbies is tuning in far away AM stations. Aside from the kick of just seeing what I can pull in from all over North America, I loved the local flavour of the varied content. I’ve been listening to BZ for 40 years- since I was a wee ‘lil tot up late under the covers w/ a flashlight and a radio. In a way, I’ve lived in beantown all my life. AM radio is becoming a bore with syndication. Thank God for my shortwave rig. Best of luck Steve. Go Sox!!!
The fact that Steve LeVeille has been let go is utter nonsense to me. I tuned in as I usually do and thought I was on the wrong station.
Shame on you CBS for thinking of the almighty dollar.
I will no longer listen to overnight radio period.
Steve was more than a radio host he was a friend to many of us loyal listeners. WBZ 1030 News radio is many listeners lighter for canning Steve.
CBS is about making money for shareholders. Nothing else matters. I don’t blame anyone for being surprised, but you shouldn’t be shocked. It was inevitable. Will Dan Rea go too? I don’t have a feel for that yet, but it’s possible I would think.
I’m sure Steve knew he was on thin ice, right from the beginning. I hope he lands on his feet, but things are tough. WBZ is no longer the power station of my youth and it’s sad.
I’ve checked his site even though I didn’t expect any word from Steve yet. That may be a while.
Wow, Tom Delay is a real ray of sunshine, isn’t he?
I am appalled at the recent firings of Steve, Pat, Lovell and Tom. I began listening to talk radio on WBZ when I was a kid in the 60’s. Bob Kennedy introduced me to local talk radio, and I was hooked.
I am tired of program managers shoving syndication down our throats. If I want that I can find it on any number of stations. This is where I thought BZ was head and shoulders above the rest. But no more.
I remember when David Brudnoy was bounced off the air for a similar reason, I believe. The outcry was so huge that he was returned to his slot where he remained until his death.
Note to Program Director: People who no longer listen to your station in the evening listen to zero of your commercials and therefore spend zero dollars on advertised products. Get it??
My alarm was set to BZ because I listened to Steve before going to bed; I called most Sunday evenings. I’m not lonely or ready to slit my wrists. I just like live, local talk. It’s that simple.
Without Steve overnight I’m going back to FM. It’s been many years since I’ve heard the Big Mattress, but it it’s still out there I’m packing and heading there or for some other LOCAL morning show that combines talk with music. I’ll even listen to the EEI sports guys with my husband; at least they play Headline News and I get a laugh out of that.
What part of LIVE, LOCAL TALK don’t you folks understand??
Someone there must want to emulate RKO. Except for Howie there’s no there there anymore either, and my listening reflects that.
Penny wise, pound foollish. Foolish program people, wake up and smell the coffee.
This was entirely predictable … and simply stupid. This syndicated program is the worst pablum I’ve ever heard. I did not agree with Steve all the time but he is sincere and honest in hs beliefs.
The negative comment above documents an apparent hyper-dysfunctional human being. Steve’s audience runs the gamut. It is apparently that this individual hadn’t listened to Steve. Get back on the medications please.
I have been a listener of WBZ for 50 years. The changes of last and the let go of Steve and his special “Home Town” style of broadcast is the final straw. Why couldn’t they let Dan go? Who’s next? Jordan? I have no longer any reason to tune in and will move on.
Thank You WBZ for 50 years of entertainment. I will miss the stories, good and bad that helped me through the long evenings.
Good Luck Steve and please let us know on your web site how you are and where your going.
Scott from Dover
WBZ whom I respected, no longer has my respect or my ear to their station since taking my “friend” Steve Leveille off the air. Replacing a warm, real personality with a generic, almost informercial sounding guy is insulting to many now former loyal listeners at WBZ. I will not even put the station on for storm coverage anymore. Count this loyal ‘BZ listener gone..
Another shame to WBZ for letting Steve LeVeille go, the best radio talk show host we have! The best to him, Diane and their lovable Max!
What a STUPID move WBZ has made.
I will be another faithful listener gone from WBZ.
I have been a faithful listener for over 35 years,my radio has been tuned in to WBZ each and every night to Larry Glick, Bob Raleigh, Norm Nathan and Steve Laveille. I have not always agreed with Steve but he was our connection in that time slot to talk about our community and all that is going on. From politics to sports there was always something of interest. It is now gone. When I heard last night that he was gone and replaced with a syndicated show, I was depressed and decided that I would be looking for another radio show to listen to. I may or may not succeed but you decision makers at WBZ have let down your listeners and ruined the enjoyment of tuning in. It is obvious we were not important in this decision and MONEY was. Big Mistake! best of luck to Steve and Lovell and all who have been displaced. I hope you find new time slots on a competitors station and we will all follow. Thank you for the memories. Mark
Well you’ve really done it this time WBZ!!! Letting Steve go is the worst thing you could do and I am no longer a listener of WBZ, I’m done. Bad enough we have to listen to the hockey games and the medical infomercials but now you’ve gone too far. Steve was the best and hopefully we’ll find him on another local station SOON. He’s too good to be silenced and I know things happen for a reason but to treat him like WBZ did shows the station has no CLASS. Take care Steve, I will miss listening to you every night
I am one more of the many who have listened to WBZ radio. When they did this to David Brudnoy, I immediately called the station to let them know my feelings. I also wrote a letter to David and he actually answered my letter to thank me.
This is the last straw. Syndication radio is not for anyone who enjoys listening to local topics. I thought that WBZ was better than this.
I wish Steve only the best and like everyone else hope that he returns on another Boston radio show.
WBZ is no longer the station to be listened to in this home.
I say my goodbyes to WBZ radio
I, too, will miss Steve. His admiration for Jean Shepherd and Norm Nathan were a testament to his standards. WBZ has done a disservice, not only to Steve, but to all of us in the extended radio family. His blend of trivia, personal anecdotes, and opinion suited the wee hours when sleep was elusive.
Let us know, Steve, when you get another spot on the dial, and we’ll be there.
I cannot believe WBZ has syndicated programming on the air now overnights. They should have kept Steve, and told some of the overpaid managers (GM, GSM, etc.) to take a paycut. ‘BZ is so cheap….they don’t even allow the sales staff to take clients out to lunch, the salespeople themselves have to pay. Also, what would the news staff do if the Globe wasn’t dropped off on the doorstep each day?
I can’t believe they let go of Steve, I have listened to WBZ since Larry Glick, when I moved down to Orlando, Fl almost 4 years ago, I got a computer for my bedroom to listen to Steve. I just loved his show and reminded me of Massachusetts, which I had lived in all of my life. He was so entertaining, can’t believe he is cut. I will be looking for another talk station, hope he is on the internet for his next talk show, I will be listening. The new talk show just cuts people off, just not the same.
Awful just awful.
Send a note to the program director at WBZ Radio and let him know what a mistake has been made. Perhaps if enough listeners provide feedback, those in the position to alter this change, will do the right thing and bring the local boys back.
Fellow WBZ nighthawks:
I, too, am shocked and disappointed at losing our radio friends Steve LeVeille (AND Diane, Max, etc.), Lovell Dyett, and Morgan White, Jr. It’ has been a pleasant experience to bond every weeknight with these talented broadcasters, as well as with frequent and interesting callers such as Glenn and Generosa. They all seem like family to us listeners. What we should do now is to keep checking these broadcasters’ websites; we may be able to catch up with them at some point in the future. Last night, Jordan Rich introduced the syndicated replacement – half asleep though I was, I think I remember his name: – Jon Grayson. Before junking WBZ altogether, let’s give Jon a chance for at least a week and see what we think. (I would love to find out what Glenn and Generosa think! ) Meanwhile, to Steve, Lovell and Morgan, best of luck, and God bless you. You will be sorely missed by thousands of fans. And thanks to Jordan for his positive attitude in all of this. What a blessing you are, Jordan!
What a shock to be awakened this morning at 3:00 am by the sound of a stranger’s voice coming from the clock radio; announcing the number to call 1-866….. somewhere in Michigan or Minnesota…what is going on? Where is Steve?
I am saddened to learn that Steve LeVeille has been so abruptly removed from WBZ. My husband and I have been fans since Steve took over for Bob Rawley so many years ago.
It would have been nice to have been able to say goodbye!
Here’s hoping the best to you Steve, Diane and Max! Thank you Steve for your many years of listening pleasure! You will be missed!
I never thought the day would come that I would not listen to WBZ. It has been one of the only stations I have listened to for years. But you know what is said about saying never!
I’m so sad that my friend of the night has left me…I’m more sad that I never called Steve to tell him, how much I loved his humor, his humanity and just being Steve. What was WBZ thinking???????
)) and Max the cat.
I wanted to write to WBZ.. is their an email address to contact that outfit.
Oh, Steve ,everything will turn out… The best to you, Diane (Barbara
You are missed.
UNBELIEVABLE!! WBZ just another classLESS dog and pony show.
I will never be able to support anything bz related again.
I’ve been listening to Steve since 1999 in Binghamnton, N Y. I only know something good will come out of all of this. I cannot believe he is gone.
good people=passion, greed = decadence
Ben
I would like to further add that:
“If you were a Steve LeVeille fan, no explanation is necessary – if you were not a Steve LeVeille fan, no explanation is possible”
I’m shocked by WBZ’s decision and disappointed that they don’t have the forthrightness to even mention the change on their site.
The syndicated show is typical, sterile and homogenized. Might as well listen to Satellite radio.
Is there any group protest being organized to contact WBZ about Steve’s firing?
I suspect we represent just a small percentage of those long time WBZ listeners that feel betrayed by the short sighted decisions made with these reductions. Like politics, all good radio is local, and without this draw we might as well just listen to satellite. radio. While this forum is healthly, please communicate your outrage directly to WBZ, so they get a true sense of the implications to this move.
Last night, I too thought I had the wrong station on…
I am very disappointed and will miss the show.
Please send comments/compaints to:

I too have been a 50 year listener. I am now a non listener of wbz (lower case on purpose). It was sad when Dave Maynard, Larry Glick, Norm Nathan, David Brudnoy, and even Bob Raleigh went off for various reasons. But this crass layoff and lack of courage by wbz management to even acknowledge it, has me fuming! Even if they were to bring Steve back, they won’t get me back as a listener, because wbz has proven it’s self as classless radio station. Listeners deserve to know what prompted the layoff. If it was purely a monetary decision, I can live with that. But this certainly smacks of something far more sinister, such as support of a particular candidate, or voicing an opinion on the customer support organization of a particular newspaper because their off shore employees cannot speak or understand English enough to deliver a newspaper so it is retreivable.
A sad, sad day in Boston! I couldn’t believe when I tuned in last night. I am a loyal listener ~ every single night I tune it to hear Steve and the crew. (My husband jokes that it’s Mission Control – I even wear headsets to bed because he can’t sleep with the radio on. I on the other hand, loved settling in and listening to Steve). I am just shocked and saddened at this decision. Steve has been there through sleepless nights with babies, sleepless nights because I’m up with a sick child, and sleepless nights just because I’m UP! I lIstened last night wondering what the heck was on the radio — ho hum. Talk about putting me to sleep. A no brainer. I shut the radio off. Another very loyal listener who is tuning out. So be it for Mission Control. Shame, shame, shame on you WBZ radio!
agreed joycek, the replacement is an “almost informercial sounding guy” – great description! altogether too chirpy-cheery, especially for overnight. i’m a light sleeper; steve and his topics/guests were (usually) just the right combo of interesting, pleasant, local interest and fun to listen for a bit and then drift off again after some passing truck had rattled me awake.
i did give the new guy a chance last night, but i think i’m stuck w/ my “babbling brook” noise machine unless/until ‘bz comes to its senses…
to add insult to injury, at one point he claimed that we shouldn’t think of it as losing our local “family”, but joining a larger one. puh-lease, we all know the short-sighted, soulless economic argument that the media conglomerates are ruled by, but DON’T insult our intelligence!
i’m amazed at those that have swallowed the koolaid, tho; somebody called in to say that he was thrilled that he could now hear the show on three stations!
to which the host’s “humorous” response was “that’s right, caller, i’ve taken over your radio and i’m not giving it back”. yeah, that’s what we need: the same thing on every station! huh?!?!
really wish it could have been dan rea who got the axe instead. apparently his tedious one-note theme of self-righteous indignation tinged with flag-waving patriotism is popular, tho, so i guess i’ve just offended many of the people who will read this. oh well.
I can’t believe this! Steve has kept me company through countless nights. They fired an asset.
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?? I have been an avid night listener of WBZ since the Larry Glick era. I will now be a non-WBZ listener. Good luck Steve. We will be searching the dial for you. Bye WBZ!!!!!
I’m joining the list of those who are saying this is a terrible decision. And I’m angry that the management of BZ has no respect for its listeners. Since they seem to have no loyalty or class, they assume we operate in the same way. No warning, no closure, and no explanation.
Well, like you, I am going to exercise my one big option. I often felt like a BZ junkie – Steve at night and news during the day.
No more. Before writing this I just changed the presets on my radio.
Steve – thanks for a good run.
I have also been a long-time listener to WBZ Radio, and I’ve particularly enjoyed and admired Steve LeVeille’s story telling talents, his intelligent discussions of politics and New England related topics and , on occasion, his sheer silliness (such as in his advising everyone to stock up on Fluff when snow storms are approaching!). Although I have never called into his show, I too considered him a friend, and enjoyed hearing about Diane, Max, and the trips to Maine. I have a very busy life with lots of beloved people (and a dog) in it, but I always valued the time listening to Steve, and his stories often made me smile. WBZ has never argued with the many talk show hosts who promote their shows as “the WBZ family”, and indeed many of us have come to feel that way about Steve and his many callers. WBZ obviously has no respect for the talent or listeners if the WBZ management cannot stand up to CBS Radio executives and explain why local talk radio on WBZ is the only talk radio which will be successful here; to make matters worse WBZ management did not even have the courage and decency to announce the layoffs in advance, and allow the talk show hosts to say farewell to the audience. To underscore the cowardice of the WBZ management and their absolute capitulation to CBS executives, there has been a complete news black-out about these firings on WBZ, and even the little comments which Jordan Rich was allowed to utter were constrained: obviously Jordan was placed in an awkward situation which he tried to handle with grace. I listened to the first hour of the new syndicated show, and that will be my last hour of listening to WBZ Radio: it’s WBUR all the time now! If there is some organized protest re: Steve’s lay off at WBZ, I will be there. Meanwhile I wish Steve the best, and hope he knows that this lay off had nothing to do with his talent or merit. Hopefully Steve will be back on the air in the near future, WBZ has lost yet another listener.

What were you thinking??? I came home from NH where I could not get BZ and looked forward to settling in with Steve LeVeille. Instead, there was this insipid,, young talk show host covering several subjects without the depth needed and wanted by Boston listeners. He retort when someone brought up that Steve will be missed, was something like well, I hope you’ll change your mind and join us. “It’s about growing the family!!!” Might have done that if Steve had been given the job.
Shame on you, BZ. We, your night time listeners, deserve better. We’ve supported you all these years and what do we get in return…..a gutless station that doesn’t even acknowledge what they’ve done. Maybe you realize it’s a mistake already? Steve comes back, I’ll come back. There are plenty of stations that give the news, traffice, and weather. They’ll get my business.
Folks besides complaining to the station, try the sponsors. They don’t want to waste money!!!
Good luck, Steve. May you find a local position so that we can listen to you. Please update us on radiosteve.com. God bless.
Sunday night was so sad. The first night without Steve. I feel as if I lost a dear friend to a sudden accident. In a way I did. We will all miss him – ESPECIALLY his stories about Max and Maine and baseball – and everything. And lets not forget the kazoo! There is no one else like him and he will be more than missed. I’m glad I got to talk to him on the last day and sent him the extra big box of Christmas goodies this year. Best of luck to you Steve and hope to hear you back on the air very soon somewhere!
I am also a long time WBZ listener as most people and I also will be not tuning in anymore. WBZ I can understand having to let people go but damn can you at least give the man a bit of time to say by to his faithful listeners? isn’t that the least you could do? It’s a damn shame!
Steve, please post something on you website to let people know you are doing ok.
-Kevin from Nashua
As a faithful listener, I want to thank Steve for his show, his interest in so many topics, his knowledge and preparation for each show. Like others, I was shocked to learn he will no longer be broadcasting on WBZ; I do hope Steve will find another radio spot in the Boston area. It just won’t be the same; I wish Steve and his family all the best. I shall seek other channels for late night listening.
I live in Pennsylvania and have listened to Steve Laveille for years and I am disappointed with yet another big name corporation (aka CBS Radio) dumping local talent to save money with a syndicated radio show (aka boring and non-relevant) Soon, terrestrial local radio will be replaced by national satellite radio and you can kiss old time local radio goodbye. I wonder what Larry Glick thinks of this bonehead move?
What is WBZ thinking?? I have been an avid night listener of WBZ since the Larry Glick era. I will now be a wbz non-listener.. Good luck Steve. I will be searching the dial for you. Good bye WBZ.
I have been a WBZ listener since 1965. I have transitioned through many early evening and late night talk show hosts but at least when those occurred, the reasons were valid. The station remained true to the listeners and provided excellent personalities to keep us well informed on a local and national level. Management failed to consider that the public would consider this sneaky and underhanded. The WBZ audience doesn’t need a sterile show that lacks personality.
Letting Steve and Lovell go is a huge mistake and those who are truly concerned should send emails in protest to
Flood their in boxes with these protests.
WBZ STINKS BRING THESE GUY’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing,
Trucked down from Maine to Mass for years listening to Steve, and his show caused me to spend money with the adverstisors. Never again….To the Bernie and Phyls, to the Law firms adverstising in that time block…Adios. You’ll never make a dime from the 38 States that tuned in to listen to Steve. To the Director of Marketing….Tune Up Your Resume ~ because your bonehead move just cost you your own job….NitWit…
I beleive that you have done the public a very serious disservice. Steve was a “breath of fresh air”. There are NO stations in Boston or N.H. worth listening to. Now my radio will only be giving me the time. Sorry to hear of your “dismissal” Steve. I hope that maangement realizes their very serious mistake. Money is definitly not the only answer to happiness. Management, you have made a very serious mistake.
First of all, my best wishes to Mr. Leveille and the rest. I just sent a email to the WBZ … Im curious what possessed you to change your overnight format on WBZ-Radio. Well I guess I’ll get more sleep this way because I wont be turning my radio on anymore.
Some of us have launched a petition to bring back Steve!
bringbacksteve.com
I’ll keep this simple: Shame on you WBZ for making a big mistake letting Steve go. I have already changed my pre-set button on my car radio. So long WBZ, your the loser!
The reason Morgan was on all the time is that Steve must have taken 40 sick days a year. He was always under the weather
I too got sick of the “max” talk-especially when that idiot woman with the Jewish cat called and asked Steve to “talk to him” after she had hung up (her cat listened to the radio-Oy !!)
I got sick of the newspaper not on the steps talk
Mel snorting like George Costanza used to be annoying too
Steve “lost it” after the political season
You cannot replace WBZ the way it was. I have been listening for many years back to Jerry. Now another wonderful thing has been taken away from us. Little by little, we are losing originality.
Bring them back.
I used to always turn Steve on when I had trouble sleeping. Then I was hooked, and stayed on listening to him. So interesting, and versatile. What has happened to Jordan Rich. And what about Generazzola who used to be on frequently. What is Steve’s direct email address?
Thanks,
Ed
PS: The new fill in id a real slouch, and so unintersting
Will miss you, Steve,
Ed
I cannot believe I had to google to find out where Steve went. I knew something was up when i tuned in theother nght and Kim Commando was on. I will miss Lovell too. Then Sunday night I get this show out of the midwest somewhere and I thought, “Oh man! The MacDonaldization of Boston Radio.” Well, I gave up MacDonalds because it was bad for my physical health. Now I will need to give up BZ late night because it’s very bad for my mental health-especially my Bostonian self identity.
Go with God Steve.

WE MISS YOU STEVE!
WBZ is a BIG loser in letting Steve LeVeille go. I enjoyed waking up to him as he always started my work day off with a smile. I have listened to Overnight America for 2 mornings and those will be the last two mornings ( I really do not care about hearing from people in Minnesota, Chicago and St. Louis). I have already switched my radio wake-up to an FM station.
Good luck in the future Steve, you will be missed.
Bill
I am also in radio, and I understand the reasons why decisions – dumb or not – have to be done.
Here’s the question I have: Why is it that radio stations very seldom, if ever, allow an on-air personality to have a good-bye show? Don’t you owe this to the long-time listeners? Don’t you owe it to the host who has built a solid, loyal listener base; to the host who has drawn sponsors to your station? Do you think Bill Shays bought time on WBZ because he likes to hear his ads at 4 am? No, he knew there were (estimated) a million listeners tuned into Steve Leveille.
If you decide not to return Steve to the airaves, at least have him in as a guest on Dan Rea’s show (and have Rex Trailer, Larry Glick and Genarosa on, too!)
Steve was my friend, not because I knew him personally, but because he was with me more than anyone else. I enjoyed his silly antics and I enjoyed the serious aspects of his personna. What we lose is our sense of community. I miss you Steve and wish you luck in your human endeavor. I will no longer listen to WBZ
Listen to Steve everynight and a lot of friends i know did to. He had one of the bst shows . I will have to look for another staion to listen to I don’t care for the new host he is not local its all out of state callers . Bring Steve Back.
Rose
I am shocked and disappointed at the news of Steve LeVeille. I have been listening to Steve for several years now and enjoy the program very much. He talked about everything and nothing and it was terrific!
Don’t the guttless higher ups understand that this program was community? No sydicated talk show host gives two hoots about toll hikes on the pike, Red Sox baseball training camp or the best clam shack in New England. I hope Steve gets a spot with another local radio station and puts the info on his website so we can find him again. WBZ is no more for me.
WBZ you have lost a listener since 1991 when I moved here from So. California. Steve, along with all his great guests, made me feel right at home here in the Boston area. Your choice to replace Steve, Pat, and Lovell with a syndicated show is atrocious. I will select another station to listen to during the day.
Bad move guys.
Steve will be missed. WBZ took a cold approach to Steve and his listeners and they deserve the cold shoulder in return. I hope many others send the hate mail to WBZ fo this. He wasn’t perfect, who is? But to pipe in a syndicated show (even worse, from the midwest) was also a slap in the face.
My ride home at 1AM will never be the same. This to me is a very personal loss.
KMan.
Go pound sand. You obviously have no class no respect for someone losing their job. This is not the time of the place for your negative BS.
100 posts for – one donkey against. Guess WBZ underestimated the popularity of the broadcast.
As a long-time listener to WBZ overnight programs since the nights of Larry Glick, I also am deeply disappointed with WBZ’s decision to drop Steve LeVeille and replace the broadcast with a generic radio show. Though I often found Steve to be annoying when it came to politics and when he indulged a few very tedious callers in meandering calls, I generally liked his show, especially when Mel Simons was on. Even when annoying though, it was authentic, a true Boston and New England show in the tradition of Glick and his successors. The generic replacement show broadcast from a Missouri cornfield to minimize overhead is an insult to BZ listeners (now former listeners). I will miss tuning into BZ. I hope that the sponsors send the BZ management a message and hit them where it hurts–in their wallets.
The handwriting is clear for all to read. Let computer streaming replace radio.
Many radio stations are opting to reduce expenses in this time of difficult finances by canceling Rush Limbaugh and saving the employment of local guys. Too bad WBZ is NOT a leader in this respect.
Boston talk radio is Republican/Conservative-lite anyway. Do what I do and replace the radio with the computer and stream and/or subscribe to podcasts and listen via your MP3 player. I listen to radio that is local to other neighborhoods around the country.
It’s easy to see why WBZ kept this info a secret. I had to go to my computer to find out about Steve’s departure. What a devious way to present this to devoted listeners!
I never listened to the whole show, but when I did, it frequently kept me company while I was trying to fall asleep.
Steve was usually quite entertaining, but never as good as when he teamed up with Mel Simon. It was terrific. No syndicated show can replace our friend, Steve.
We are really upset by the recent dismissals of leading WBZ personalities. As long time listeners and fans of these and other WBZ on air personnel, we feel this is a personal slap in the face to us and the many loyal WBZ listeners who have been like us following the station for decades. Also, the way in which the hosts were let go and in such a sneaky manner suggests that the station management consists of people who ar less than honest with their employees and their listeners than they should be. In particular, we feel someone like Generosa who lives WBZ has had much of her enjoyment taken away suddenly and without any consideration of her feelings. WBZ managment should be ashamed of thenselves. It seems that these actions stem from greed at the station and not out of concern for the listeners who are afterall the customers of WBZ. We also feel that we will be seeking talk radio from another source which has a more local connection. Goodbye WBZ!
Let WBZ’s advertisers know that you will not patronize them because of WRXs actions….it’s all about the money folks.
Hope to hear you back on the airways soon Steve!
Steve has updated his website http://www.geocities.com/~radiosteve/
to add the phrase
ONE OF AMERICA’S UNEMPLOYED
to the front page.
The site has received nearly 1,000 hits in the past twelve hours.
The new show is unbearable – someone take the coffee away from that guy.
No coverage of the Fenway fire, no Lottery numbers, the list will go on…
At least my husband is happy, he hates the radio at night!! Although I think he likes the Mount Vernon Restaurant song.
So now I won’t have to struggle with those stupid headphones…
Good Night, Old Sport.
Steve thanks for all those years of keep us awake. You will be missed!! Hope you get another job locally so can give us the same quality of entertainment. Especially for you recipe for chilli. You will be missed!!!

Please bring Steve back…I really miss him. Syndicated radio will never hold a candle to the radio personalities that have been let go at WBZ.
Please admit that a mistake has been made and all will be forgiven…just bring back our local personalities.
If you find you can not possibly bring them back, please tell us where they have gone so that we can still listen to them.
Come on folks…don’t think of it as losing Steve, think of it as gaining insight into monkey meat.
You exercised your options and now I will exercise mine —WBZ will no longer be heard on my radio – day or night. We are gradually losing many freedoms and now have lost the freedom to choose radio programs that are informative and enjoyable — and fun! This will not have been a sound business decision as you will find that you have lost most of your listeners.
M. Moon
I’ve been a regular and faithful listener of Steve’s and WBZs for more than a year, after I found out what a gem of a call-in program he was running in Boston. So you might say that “I’m a moderately long but never once” a call-in participant of the program. I was listening the night that the second or third caller unloaded the rumble that Steve had been given his walking papers. The news staggered me and here I am several nights later and still I’m not able to adjust. One thing is for certain though, I’ll not be listening to WBZ any longer . . . I have been a great supporter of the station and many times have mentioned WBZ – 1030 AM to local friends and encouraged them to tune in. No more! What a short-sighted decision on the part of the the station that Steve has helped to build!!.
During my early morning commute here in southern Michigan three years ago, I chanced upon the Steve Leveille Broadcast, and have (had) been an avid listener ever since. Friday’s were always my favorite, waiting for Generosa to call in. I could hardly keep my car on the road when Steve had callers singing their favorite old tv commercial jingles! And how about Joe the Baker, the Hookie Lau song, winter barbeque, and the exclusive Leveille-Hagopian pole? I became a Red Sox fan through Steve, and have the Maine Diner on my list of New England eateries not to miss. I can only imagine the disbelief and disgust long-time WBZ listeners in New England must feel at Steve’s removal. The stupidity of WBZ’s decision ripples all the way to Michigan — and beyond.
Lovell Dyett, let’s face it, offered nothing but cliches and had the depth of a puddle. I though Steve LaVeille was OK but I usually sleep at those times. In fact I will really miss Pat Desmarais, he is energenic and capable of complex thinking when discussing and deconstructing issues.
Don’t you love all the french names in New England??
On the rare occasions that Jordan Rich talks politically, he is quite good. He is very intelligent and has a good vocabulary, which helps when you’re in the business of talking, right Lovell?
Dan Rae is great, I don’t like it when he acts wishy-washy because it’s just an act but when his true self comes out, I like it.
I am saddened to learn about the firing of Steve LeVeille. He was the best. I listened to him often. Alas, like many other fans, I will be turning my radio to another station. I hope he finds another job ,locally. You guys made a hugh mistake. It’s all based upon corporate greed.
yeah instead they get this grayson moron in place of the good talk-show hosts. AM is doomed.
No Class WBZ. I am another listener you’ve lost.
Thank you Steve – let us know how and where you are.
is it money that made you drop steve, what aloss for wbz,IWILL NOT LISTEN TO YOUR NEW PROGRAM.iwish you could have steve back for him to say goodbye to all his fans atleast we would have a chance to say good bye. marie porter along time fan and i miss him very much
Although I’m one of the 95% who have never called the show, I’ve been a listener of WBZ overnite for years and have enjoyed listening to Steves program in the early morning hours. I’ll miss the show in general and the regular folks who have called in over the years including Generosa, Hank, Claudio the little guy with the accent who makes the donuts and is slow answering the phone, the paper guys, the milk delivery driver, etc. they were all good
it was all for good light listening during the nightand early morning hours. the very best of luck to you Steve. I enjoyed your program and will miss it
Bob in Dudley
I am truly saddened WBZ decided to let Steve LoVeille go as I enjoyed his show alot. Now we have another Art Bell show in it’s place. I enjoyed Steve’s variety and his comments on our area I don’t really care about peoples views in other parts of the country. I like to listen to people, problems and ideas from our area and Steve delievered this on a nightly basis, he will be sorely missed. I hope he publishes his next show location as i will remain a faithful listener.
First good luck Steve you will be missed. Next as for WBZ simple stated a very bad move. This will cost you much more then what you will save. I know money is everything today but market share is how WBZ makes it’s money. My GREAT hope that your maket share will crash big time. I don’t like to use four leter words but WBZ case. It will be very easy the four letter word that means everything to WBZ is “CASH” and I hope you will cash out.
To Steve – I hope the campaign will work and you will be be back.
I tuned in and heard Dan saying he was staying on until 1AM and when I heard the news about Steve, I had a hard time sleeping (only a radio show – I think not). I had a feeling something was up as the shows had a real nostalgic theme over the past month. I got hooked on local talk radio with Bob Kennedy’s Contact! in the 60’s and have listened to ‘BZ at night over the years following David Broudnoy, Larry Glick (my favorite), Dave Maynard, Dick Summer, Robin Young, Bob Raliegh, Norm Nathan, Paul Sullivan & Jordan & Steve. The downsizing or going to a national format is for the smaller radio stations, not for 50,000 watt ‘BZ. Looks like the local grocery store being eaten up again.
Steve
Sorry to hear the bad news!
We will miss you.
Hope you land a better situation in the very recent future. Please update what is happening on your web site.Best of Luck.
Ford of Huntsville Ontario Canada
The people at WBZ have made a huge mistake. Steve was one of the last of the “classy” talk show hosts. I can tune in to any station, anytime, and get bombarded with talking heads spewing their hate, and I can listen to the national broadcasts and hear “Fred from Wyoming” discussing his state’s government. Are there no more signs of intelligent life at WBZ? They’ve lost me as a listerner, and that’s not just at night. Steve, we’ll miss you, and please keep us updated on your website as to where we can find you. I know someone will want your fabulous talent — you won’t have to wait too long. Best of luck to you, and thank you for everything. It was greatly appreciated by the people who count!
Please bring Steve back.!!! He is part of our “family” and I am saddened to know he was “dismissed” by WBZ without so much as an inkling that it was going to take place. Like many others, this family will no longer be tuning in to WBZ and their sponsors. Mr. Grayson is a poor replacement. Will others please tell me whom you are listening to now in the early mornings?
I also listen to ‘bz every night and realized something was definitely wrong the night Steve wasn’t there and then I read in the Boston Herald he was gone..Steve, you have an enormous amount of talent and hopefully another radio station will realize that real soon (and when that happens, please let all your listeners know)..You have a huge following…WBZ’s loss will be another station’s gain (and their popularity will soar to great heights)
I don’t live in Boston. I never listened to Steve’s show. And although I spent the first six years of my 28-year career in broadcasting, I’ve been in print the past 22.
But I worked with Steve. A lot. On the same shift. At ABC News in NY. And I can say without hesitation that he was — and I’m sure remains — a class act (apart from being a bigger baseball nut than me).
Shortly before I left ABC, within a span of two months I A) got married and B) got a life-threatening meningitis, probably picked up during my honeymoon trip. They took me out of the ABC newsroom directly to the ER at Lenox Hill hospital. I still treasure Steve’s gracious and funny “get-well” note, and wondered in the past few years where he wound up. I was sad to find out that he lost his gig, but this is radio and people lose their gigs a lot.
Talent like his will always resurface…and his listeners, wherever they are, will benefit. Steve, if you’re reading any of these, look me up. I’m at Aviation Week now. (Joel Komisarow was right, I DID end up at AvWeek!)
Hi everyone,
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sign our petition/e-mail campaign to WBZ to bring Steve back. It’s so important we show WBZ how upset we are.
bringbacksteve.com
I agree Steve should still be on the air and we need to continue to email and call in and protest.
ATTENTION: HIT ‘BZ IN THE POCKET BOOK.
CALL THE SALES GURU RIGHT NOW, AND LET HER KNOW YOU’RE DONE LISTENING, AND YOU’RE DONE WITH THEIR OTHER SPONSORS:

One more vote for bringing Steve back. I did listen to Overnight America , and did not like it at all. Soooo pablum! I noted their advertisers so that I could send letters and ensure that I would not patronize. ((Brandeis, Jordans, Bill Shay, among others)
Again, a short term profit oriented solution that will be the end of WBZ as a stalwart of this area.
It’s bad enough I know what happen to Steve…..but to explain it to my 76 Year Old mother.
WBZ an institution in radio history has just gave themselves a big black mark in the books. You fail bigtime …..Bring Steve Back before he would think of ever coming back.
By the way Steve …This is Woonsocket, RI speaking on your behalf.
It’s a huge mistake letting Steve LeVeille go. I hope there is a huge uproar.
I am simultaneously sad and enraged at the sacking of Steve LaVeilli and the absence of his radio show on WBZ from midnight to 5 am. This feels like a sudden death of a close friend. He is a companion to the many, many who walk the night from the insomniac to the just coming home nurse.
Steve is the voice in the dark who provides a forum for every type of discussion possible. His great humor, creative thinking, and warm heart have given the air waves a much needed humanity and intelligence. We all feel good after listening to him talk about the important issues of the day. We all chuckle a little when he has games for all of us to play.
I am enraged to postal levels that Boston no longer is source of this show. We have been strip malled. Everything is the same. Filene’s yields to Macy’s. The administrators who made this decision did not do their homework. This show is a large, bright shining jewel amongst a lot of boring, boring, boring blather out there. It is unique and importantly maintains the regionalism of this New England area while including folks from all over the country who are moving about in the night. Those people call in and say how much they enjoy Steve’s reliability and welcoming voice. Shame on you for doing this. You have lessened yourself and taken us all with you.
I, for one will not be listening to some freaking syndication program. I am telling my friends what’s been done and not to listen to radio WBZ.
WBZ, What were you thinking? What do people in Boston have in common with Jon Grayson? Worst show I have ever heard! Can’t wait till Steve lands with another station. Resetting my radio presets after this e-mail. Good luck Steve, you definitely deserved better.
Steve I miss you so much. I can’t wait to hear you on another station!!!!!!
I am so disappointed in WBZ Radio. I have been a late night AM and shortwave radio listener since I was a young child. I would spend nights spinning the dial, looking for interesting stations.
I stumbled upon WBZ some 20 years ago. This was the first station that I actually locked into as a regular listener. I listen most every night. I have become familiar with the Boston area via the local programming. I have friends that go to college or that have taken jobs in the New England areas around Boston. I have frequented the places advertised or even discussed on Steve’s show PRECISELY because he introduced them to me. I have not been there yet, but I plan on visiting the restaurants in Maine that he has mentioned as well.
I have chosen to listen to Steve, Jordan, Lovell, Sully, and all the other late night hosts over the years precisely for their local flavor. I will miss the trivia shows and audio clip nights the most. This was unique programming that is not available in syndicate…. maybe you should have considered syndicating Steve instead… that would have been a better idea…
I live in the St Lawrence River Valley area of Northern NY State. I am 20 minutes from the Canadian border. I live closer to the Capital City of a foreign nation than I do to a small US city. I do travel sometimes and Steve has made me aware of all the wonderful things Boston has to offer.
I guess it is time to move down the dial. I will begin looking for my next stopping point…. I will be looking for Steve if I can get him… I see that WBZ is not the place to find that info… I will keep an eye on Steve’s website…
A personal note to Steve: I will miss you greatly. You can not be glibly replaced by some canned program that can be found at any half-rate cheap radio station. I hope you find a new radio home, and when you do, please let us, your faithful listeners know all about it…. Good luck and best wishes from a Red Sox Fan from Northern NY state….
For those that have not read it: This morning there is an update on Steve’s web page: Boston Herald Interview – January 2009.
Steve, you deserve the best. There are so many of us that will miss you in the wee hours of the night.
Brief piece from Jessica Heslam at the Boston Herald here –
Leveille says he’s looking for a morning show slot on the East Coast. Let’s hope he finds one.
im very upset they laid steve off he kept alot of peole awake those of us who work the wee hours those elderly who beacause of one reason or another
im gonna miss him dearly
WBZ made a decision and so did most of us. We can’t wait to tune in to Steve’s new Radio Station
I thought I was hearing things. How could Steve Lavalle and Morgan be gone from this wonderfully entertaining evening broadcast. My 92 year old motherinlaw and myself would chit chat about who and what we heard from these shows. I usually sleep right through the night, but there is always that occasion where you can’t sleep and I would listen to these shows. Such a shame such talent and knowledge be replaced. I thought something was going on the past week on and off I was listening to ??????????????????. Sorry to see this happen to 2 GENTLEMEN OF THE NIGHT!!
wbz…big mistake..Boston listeners will not put up with syndicated, plastic, monkey meat radio.
I have never been political..but will contact all advertisers and tell them that I will no longer patronize them if WBZ does not bring back local radio and of course Steve Leveille… Boston deserves better than syndicated radio
i think the cat did him in after the first two weeks i would just change the station once someone would ask about it because he would go on and on about it everything else i will miss though
I’ve listened to Steve for years, and hearing his voice come on at midnight was like talking with an old friend. They should bring him back, I’m not going to listen to a syndicated talk show that is based in the midwest for local topics. Beyond that, they now replay Dan Rae’s show from midnight to 1 am, a show I like, but not when it’s just a repeat. The station is now just a headline news station with one talk show host at night. That is a sad situation for WBZ and us.
Lastly, I wish the station had the class to let Steve sign off and say goodbye to his listeners after 10 years. The listeners and Steve deserved that. The way they pretended all of a sudden he never existed, and remove him from the web site live cast, was like how the Soviets would disappear government officials in Soviet Russia when they suddenly fell out of favor there. Not something a news station should emulate.
Steve I hope you come back to WBZ!

Why would thousands of Canadians tune to WBZ nightly year after year to listen to a Boston talk show host and call in on their own dime? Because Steve LeVeille was unique in talk radio – a lifeboat in a sea of bland, boring and politically divisive talk show airbags. He was an ambassador for Boston tourism, sharing the city’s charm with potential vacationers from across the Northeastern U.S. and Canada. He was funny and musical and his call-in regulars were people we got to know. Delightful Jenna (may we all reach our 90s so gracefully); Glen (always had a great story to tell); Pat (what a fantastic laugh she has). Steve and Mel Simon together for their trivia nights was always a treat. Sure, the interest of Toronto Blue Jays fans waned when Steve went on and on about his beloved Red Sox, but nobody is perfect. Larry King (until he moved from radio to TV decades ago) and Steve stood out in the crowd. The new guy on WBZ? No buzz there, so it looks like we’re back to Coast to Coast, where Art Bell caught out attention a decade ago. Slim pickings for all-night radio listeners hunched over computers listening online. Hurry back, Steve. Anywhere, anytime.

Nice job BZ for dumping Steve, must have made a huge difference in whether BZ survives or not. The one who came up with the idea should have been fired on the spot, you idiot!
Have you listen to that crap you now have on? I have, for about 3 minutes and that’s all your getting from me!
Steve good luck in your future endeavers, looking forward to catching you on a station that cares about what people want to hear.
i never called your show but i was out there every morning.
“Friday – Friday”! How sad not to hear this weekly greeting this a.m. between 4 and 5 from the Princess of Peabody, Generosa. I have listened to Steve’s program for many years and felt that I was listening to a friend. Often I would fall asleep only to wake up just before four in order to catch Generosa. Sometimes I missed her and felt really bad about it. I remember one week she didn’t call in and Steve kept calling out for her to call – just in case she fell asleep. He was really concerned about her. Now, I will just have to phone her a little more often. She is such a special 96 year old! Thanks, Steve, for giving me the opportunity of developing such a wonderful friendship. Thanks, too, for the countless hours I listened to you talk about ordinary things in such a way that I just couldn’t fall asleep and miss any of it. I listened to you for years via the radio even when the reception was so poor that I only heard every third word. Lately I have listened via the internet with a speaker installed next to my bed.
Good luck to you, Steve…I know I will hear you again. In the meantime enjoy some special time with Max and come back on the air full of stories to tell us. Shame on WBZ for the way they went about this. I will never listen to that station again nor will I support their sponsors on my many trips to Boston. I learned about The Mt. Vernon Restaurant through WBZ and it will be hard not to dine there.
steve was the best i will not listen to wbz again unless they put steve back on
i too have Steve to thank for getting me through the chemo ’sleeplessness’. i so enjoyed the comfort of his familar antics. Generosa and Claudio were part of the family, and as i said before on another blog, so what if we heard all about Max the cat?????? i prefer to hear that than about Gary LaPierre’s retirement! the overnite audience is in a class of its own. I have now reset the radio dial because i will not listen to that ‘canned applesauce’ that is on all nite. Changing the dial means cancelling out Dan Rea, Jordan Rich and Ed Walsh and the morning team. i guess if Steve goes, you all go. Bad decision.
Steve updated his website with a nice message to all his fans
BZ has made a big mistake. Steve fulfilled a need for home spun conversation. His sincerity and humor lulled many a listener to sleep when sleep was difficult. He will be missed. Perhaps BZ should consider a more humane way of treating its employees.
One other comment. please remember Jordan Rich is the spirit of Norm Nathan. When Norm died naturally there were prizes he couldn’t send out. I e-mailed Jordan about it and he made sure my moms elderly friend received the prize. Please don’t boycott his show. Hurting him is hurting Norm.
Although I enjoy the Jordan Rich show I will not listen anymore. WBZ does not deserve me as a customer and each night when I scroll through the stations looking for a ray a hope somewhere else I am let down and turn off the radio. I can hear news elsewhere. They lost this fan of 30 yrs.
Another sad member of Steve’s “family” checking in . . . he was a superb radio host and unlike anyone else I encountered on the radio — smart, funny, generous, unpredictable. Also not afraid to speak truth to power: I wonder whether that finally did him in at WBZ. He will be greatly missed, and I hope that this imposed change will help him to turn up in an even better spot!
I WAS a listener to WBZ – because of Steve LeVeille, and his mix of current events, politics and fun topics as well (the shows he had with Mel Simons in particular were a real treat) Also, being a cat lover, I always enjoyed his stories about his cat, Max. It’s EXTREMELY short sighted, also STUPID to let Steve go – it just lets me know that BZ doesn’t care at all about its listeners, and just cares about their ‘bottom line’ And, after hearing the absolutely INSIPID program that was put into Steve’s time slot, I won’t be listening to the radio station again! I will listen again of course, only if they BRING Steve BACK!
And, a personal note to Steve – Thank you very much for the years of wonderful listening, I really enjoyed them! I’ll really MISS you, but PLEASE try to let all of your loyal listeners know where you’re going next and my ‘ears’ will follow you.
Hi! It stinks that WBZ let Steve, Lavell and the others go. To the powers that run WBZ I say “Goodbye!”. To the hosts let go and to past talk show hosts, quoting Lavell, “I love you. I love you madly!”.
After 30 years of listening to WBZ, tonight will be the first night that I have changed to another station. WBZ overnight talk has been terrible since they let Steve LeVeille go. Obviously WBZ does not care that they are losing listeners..that really is to bad.
Big mistake not letting the listeners know what happened to Steve! Didn’t anyone in management go to college and learn communication skills? I’m done with ‘bz over to ‘rko now.
I WAS a listener to the station for 40 years. So disappointed that they did this. Will miss Steve. Morgan ,and Mel. I’ve already switched to FM weeknights.
To Steve, I miss you. I always looked forward to your voice on Sunday nights. Mr Marble Mouth doesn’t do it for me. I find his voice and program annoying and insincere. Please know you have fans OUTSIDE of Boston. How can we ever hear you again? Would you consider Satellite Radio? WBZ has made a giant error in judgement. They are self destructing. Too bad. I thought WBZ was gifted. Untrue.
Well belive it or not Glen from Brighton was on Sunday morning stating how much he liked the new guy and the way he ran his show. Thanks Glen
I have never felt a greater loss since Larry Glick signed off. Our AM reception in Michigan is not that great; even with the fading in and out, I would keep Steve tuned in all night – his down home humor and logic is unique. With the ensuing silence from WBZ, I’m afraid we haven’t heard the last. . . .
On the bring back steve website it is suggested to try a write in campaign. I have been listening to rko but isn’t the same… A stamp and a letter is the least we can do.
Now the next part of our campaign. Let’s get Steve back the way thousands of fans brought back legend David Brudnoy
Consider writing letters to your local and major New England papers encouraging people to write WBZ too.
Letter writing campaign
1. Get an envelope
2. Get a stamp
3. Write a letter about WBZ & Steve
4. You already know the address. Send it to:
WBZ Newsradio 1030
1170 Soldiers Field Road
Boston, MA 02134
I’m still angry about Steve LeVeille not being on the air. Do the chuckleheads who let him go listen to his replacement? ARGH
Mr. Ted Jordan,
As a frequent listener to your radio station day and night. I am very disappointed in the recent lay off of Mr. Steve Laveille. Syndicated talk shows will not replace local and live talk show hosts. Mr Rae’s rebroadcasts will not replace live and local talk show hosts. Mr Laveille had a large following. I listened to him on my way home from work each night and he will be missed. I will start listening to my CD player now instead of ‘BZ. I will use my cell phone for traffic updates instead of “traffic on the threes”. I will use other technology for my weather updates.
Disappointed listener
Dear Steve:
You are missed! Radio will never be the same. Bless you and Diane and of course Max. Hope to hear you on the radio again!
I have now switched to WRKO and FM talk radio. Will never listen to WBZ again!!!!
Aren’t the management at WBZ bright. Dismissing you, Morgan, Pat, & Leval. Shows how much they care about their employees, and the WBZ listeners. What does the 50,00 watts have to do with their so called grand radio staion? No one will be listening now to such boring ‘talk’.
Regards,
Steve’s fan – Clara
I am still saddened and outraged over the letting go of Steve on WBZ. Having been a WBZ listener for over 30 years, I can’t believe that the station would replace such a great LOCAL talk host with some canned and boring show. I listened the first night for 10 minutes and that was enough for me. Since WBZ doesn’t seem to care how they treat their hosts or listeners, I don’t care to be a listener anymore. As others have posted I have found other stations to fill my nights and days with news and talk. I hope the powers that be like their new programming because from what I have seen and read they are the only ones listening. BRING BACK STEVE!!
Night have been horrible. Late last year I purchased a “HD” radio so I could hear Steve loud & clear. I never anticipated that I would not listen to WBZ, but I’ve now found WTKK for days and WROR-HD2 for night music. Still not the same but the anguish is syill there when I go to bed each night. I did tune into Jordan’s show last weekend when he mentioned about the budget cuts at WBZ not affecting the promo spots for the shows, but I couldn’t listen for long. I’ve written to WBZ, gone to the ‘bringbacksteve” and signed the petition and now sit and wait to see when Steve will be back on somewhere. It will be a great day when Steve announces on “RadioSteve.com” when he will be back.
i loved when steve got romantic under the tree with dianne and when him and kim from boston would talk for 45 minutes about max’ kitty litter, at least i got sleep when he was on. he just wasnt prepared thats why he alwaays called for open phones light.
As a former radio program director, people often complain to me about today’s style of radio. Until recently, I usually pointed to WBZ as a shining example of good radio. But no more. WBZ has gone from atypical to a typical. Sad to hear how the mighty have fallen.
I’m sorry to hear that, i was a big fan but since last year i couldn’t listen anymore because i have moved and now some static makes it impossible to recieve BZ here in Trois Rivières, Québec, Canada. Just three miles from my previous home!
Looks like Steve will be back, same time same bat channel starting this Sunday evening (2-1-09)
Was I dreaming or did I really hear that Steve is coming
back.
As I was listening to the traffic report today going home(it is the only thing I listen to on the 3’s since Steve was let go)…………
IT WAS STATED…….STEVE IS COMING BACK TO HIS
USUAL SHOW………..HIP HIP HOORAY.
Has anyone else heard this?
I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM BringbackSteve.com and it states that STEVE WILL BE BACK ON WBZ IN HIS USUAL TIME SLOT NEXT MONDAY! WBZ has come to their senses! Hooray! check at the website at
WBZ web site. HOORAY!
YES I got the email too. STEVE IS BACK! Thank you WBZ!!!!!!!
I also just read that Steve will be coming back. It looks a though WBZ has a conscience after all. It took a lot of us to get our result. Maybe some of the sponsors put a little financial pressure the station. After all money talks. Anyway I’ll be tuning back into WBZ at night. Welcome back Steve
So happy to hear the news about Steve coming back!! Since he left WBZ I haven’t listened to any of their programing, but I tell you there isn’t a lot out there to listen to!!!!! It hasn’t been the same so I’m very happy to hear the good news. WELCOME BACK STEVE, YOU’VE BEEN MISSED!!!
OMG! Finally someone listens to the little people, STEVE IS COMING BACK TO WBZ. WBZ is back on my presets. thank you, thank you, thank you.
Grassroots works – congratulations!!! Great news. I can here him now……..maybe he’ll conduct a poll: “A day off or A month off” – or sign on by saying (in a Jack Parr voice) “well, as I was saying last time we spoke”
I can’t wait to hear Steve. Thank you bringbacksteve.com
After stocking up on old time radio cds and just figuring out last night how to reprogram the presets on my bedside radio to drop BZ, it looks like I will have to add BZ back! Thanks BZ management for bringing Steve back! Hard to believe it is actually happening! Wonderful.
steve please prepare this time and do your home work…no cat talk
Hooray! Steve is coming back. One less suicide in Tucson, AZ
I heard it last night from Dan Rey as I was following asleep. I saw Steve’s leaving as the death knell to WBZ which I see as a fundamental New England institution — I am so psyched. Power to the people! Thanks to all of you who put up web sites and sent emails!
OMG, i am so excited. although i would not relish going through chemo again, i would tell you that he made every sleepless nite worth it.. i never never thought this would be reversed. i am beyond thrilled and cannot wait until monday overnite!!!!
Thank you WBZ!!!!! I am so thrilled Steve is coming back. All the letters and emails actually paid off. It will be so nice to hear the old familiar voice that I have enjoyed for so many years and really missed. Cya later new guy, you won’t be missed!!!!
There is a god! Welcome back Steve!!
I heard the good news from Mal Fuller on shortwave WBCQ 7.415 on Friday night.
Only one question remains following this fiasco: did WBZ return Steve because The People had spoken or because Generosa gave management a piece of her mind?
Tired this morning..listened to Steve all night. It was great to hear his voice again. Welcome back Steve.
Listening to Steve at night always makes me a bit groggy the next day. But I am not complaining. Having him back is so right.
