Christine A. McCallum: Fired Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Rape (Video, Photo)
A Rockland, Massachusetts elementary school teacher, 29 year old Christine A. McCallum, has been charged with carrying on an 18 month sexual relationship with a boy that began when he was 13 years old.
McCallum was arrested at her home on Thursday night, January 8, 2009, according to Rockland police chief John Llewellyn. McCallum pleaded not guilty today in Brockton District Court to three counts of statutory rape in Abington and then moved on to Hingham District Court to be arraigned on four additional counts of statutory rape in Rockland.
The fifth grade teacher was accompanied to court by her husband of five years, Scott McCallum, who stood by her side during the court proceedings.
The teacher was fired today from Woodsdale Elementary School in Abington according to Superintendent Peter G. Schafer. He released a statement that said: “We are aware and are deeply concerned about the disturbing allegations against her, and we will be fully cooperating with the authorities.”
According to the complaint, McCallum was working as a teacher’s aide and was tutoring the boy’s younger brother when the relationship began. The boy is now 16 years old and his father recently discovered letters between his son and McCallum and went to authorities. The teen admitted to police that he had engaged in sex with the woman every other day for a year and a half. She reportedly gave him a cellphone so that the two could communicate.
McCallum told authorities that she had become a surrogate mother to the boy, who lives in Abington and is being raised by a single father. Authorities believe they have sufficient evidence to suggest that she plied the boy with alcohol and the relationship progressed to a sexual one.
The accused woman’s attorney, Frederick McDermott, indicates there is no evidence to suggest that the relationship was sexual. His client reportedly ended the relationship in July 2007 when she caught the boy stealing liquor from her home.
McCallum has been ordered to surrender her passport, must wear a GPS tracking monitor and stay away from the boy, his family and all children under the age of 16 years of age.

I was a “victim” of statutory rape when I was a 16 year old teenage boy. I am now in my 40’s, and I still can’t believe I was harmed in any way. I am grateful for the experience and I am grateful to the woman, who was in her 30’s at the time, for the joy and love we had together.
If I could go back in time, I probably would not have had sex with her over again, only because of the legal danger it put her in. She was a wonderful person who never took advantage of me or anyone else. I got more than half of the joy from our relationship, and she had all of the risk.
I realize that such a relationship might be harmful to many teenage girls and maybe a few teenage boys too, so being part of such a relationship is very unwise even without the legal consequences, but I just can’t feel right about putting women in jail for doing something that probably made a young man VERY happy, and giving him an experience that I doubt he will ever regret.
In this case, maybe thirteen is just too young, but think about the women who are sitting in jail for having sex with 15 and 16 year-olds. Do you *really* think those boys were harmed?
Hi Anon, our one boy had an affair with his 10th grade teacher when he was 16. He looked about 20 when he was 16 and the girls were all over him. He fell for his teacher who was only 22. When I found out I was angry and my husband had a long talk with our son and told me to butt out that our son had NOT been hurt by this and that they both had feelings for one another..I did what my husband asked but I also told my son that this teacher could go to jail and get her right to teach taken away from her. He graduated from high school and they started dating and are now married and have 2 kids. She was not a pedophile but she could have been put in prison had we gone to the authorites. Even with the age difference between them they have agreat marriage and are good parents.
I have come to believe that these things can happen that age is something that has nothing to do with whom you fall in love with. I asked my son how he would feel if this happend to hjis son and he said it would depend on the circumstances and how his son was taking this situation.
I never was comfortable with this whole thing but now I have come to terms since after 4 years after this happened that they got together and now have a nice life and family and have been together for over 10 years.
you people are ridiculous.
it is against the law. plain and simple.
when someone is put in a position of authority, then they should continue to act like one.
if these women are ‘in love’ with the boys, why must the relationship be physical? because it’s not love, it’s lust, it’s these women who want to feel young again and enjoy ‘puppy love’.
13 year olds should be playing,
