Another Miley Cyrus photo scandal is brewing. The latest picture has many calling the 16-year-old Hannah Montana star racist.
The photo shows Miley and a group of friends pulling back the corners of their eyes to mock the slanted eyes of people of Asian descent.
The OCA, an Asian-American advocacy group, issued a statement saying, “The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent.”
“Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans,” said George Wu, executive director of OCA. “The inclusion of an Asian Pacific American individual in the photo does not make it acceptable.”
The group has requested an apology from Cyrus for the offensive gesture.
This is the latest in a long line of photo scandals for the pop star.

I happen to be Asian and I find this common and extremely offensive. It is mocking our physical appearance which is something We can’t change. I embrace my culture and for someone to make a joke out of it is just stupid and they need to think about what they are doing. Especially Miley, she has lots of fans, though I’m not sure why, that are young and look up to her. With her current actions she’s not doing herself any favors with her career.

i think it’s only right that Miley publicly apologize, if only for what the photo may have implied, because then the general idea will be that something like this is acceptable to be paraded around in public.

The problem is that this has become such a widely used gesture to represent the Asian community. It’s become so accepted that it’s not considered a problem if people do it. But the thing is that the fact that the people in the general public don’t consider this a problem is the problem. If you look into the history of the depiction of asian people the thing that stand out most is the eyes. There is an artist that does paintings of Africans with big butts. These have become our societies stereotypes of certain races. Just because the general public does it doesn’t mean that it isn’t offensive.

Some people find this offensive, and some do not. The point is, as a young celebrity and a role model, Miley has a responsibility to behave as a POSITIVE role model. If she were a random teenager, no one would care about the photo. Her younger, more naive fans may get the wrong idea. She has to consider who might see photos like this. (Despite the fact that is was a personal photo, c’mon, she’s a celeb…and sadly, celebs have VERY LITTLE privacy. It comes with the territory.) for all the comments defending miley and her actions i.e. “get tougher skin”, “white people should be offended by the asian guy holding his eyes wide”, etc…look at the big picture. you seem to forget that caucasians hold just about all of the political and economic power in this country since they are the majority. minorities are not equally represented in politics and government. that’s why they are minorities. this is a huge deal to the minorities who are trying to improve their social status. so by differentiating somebody’s looks based on race in contrast to the CAUCASIAN MAJORITY perpetuates an unequal playing field. more importantly, it prepetuates the majority continuing to be the majority and making sure the minority stays where they are at. so you can see how this can manifest in society and the work place with favoritism, hiring practices, promotions, opportunities, etc. so the slanted eye gesture shows that “you are different”, “inferior”, “not like us” and a group is typically only concerned with its own intersts and survival.

Just because there is an Asian dude in the picture while they are making fun of Asian people doesn’t make it less offensive. Because Miley is seen as a role model to young girls, her actions and conduct are scrutinized more. Her status as a superstar, guarantees that this picture will circulate around more which means more people will see it and think it’s cool to make fun of another race. No race is better than the other. It’s thinking like that by one mad man – Hitler which made the Holocaust happen.
this photo may seem racist but they don’t take it seriously one there is an asian guy and two they all look pretty high there eyes are all red you squint when your high enough and you do stupid things when your high.

Racism towards Asians is considered acceptable in western society due to the many wars and economic rivalry between Whites and Asians. Everyone goes apeshit when Don Imus says “nappy haired ho“, but when John McCain said “I hate gooks“ it doesn`t make the mainstream media. Miley Cyrus is damn lucky that an Asian happened to be in the picture, this has lessened the backlash she would of gotten considerably. To me it doesn`t matter whether an Asian is present in the photo, I`ve met Asians like this before, they sacrifice their dignity and usually allow themselves to be the the butt of jokes in order to climb the white dominated social ladder. Although they are Asian in appearance, they tend to consider themselves white and all their friends are usually white. They have low self-esteem and often they make jokes about their Asian appearance in order to be accepted and play the role of court jester to the delight of their White “friends“.

You all need to grow up. whether this was ment as an offensive act or not, she is sixteen and has poor judgement like any other teen. It’s not an insult, its just a psychological fact. Shes trying to have a little fun with friends, and if she can’t do that without someone judging her actions, where is the freedom in being a teen at all?

What is so negative about having slanted eyes? That is like saying that if Asians took pictures of themselves holding their eyes more open, people with rounder eyes should be offended. I’m Asian, and me and my friends have taken gag pictures like this before. One of my “white” friends will squint their eyes and I’ll open mine wide. That’s what they were doing here, just havin’ a laugh. OCA obviously just wants attention, they have probably been waiting for her or another famous person to do something like this for a while I bet. After all, how many of you have heard of OCA before this? I know I didn’t.
As an Asian, I see nothing offensive about this picture. My little sister loves this show, if see saw this picture she would probably just laugh at the silly faces.

Hey, to those of you who don’t see this as offensive: Let’s get some photos of Miley wearing blackface, bucking her teeth, and holding a watermelon. Or wearing a swastika on her arm. Or wearing a hat and curls of a Hasidic Jew and prancing around like an idiot. Or putting on war paint and waving a tomahawk so she can offend American Indians too. What’s the big deal in all of this? This stupid girl is a role model, whether she likes it or not. Ok. So I’ve done tonnes of exchanges with asian countries and what I see in this picture is that All of the non-asian people are making ‘asian’ eyes and the ASIAN guy is opening his eyes as wide as possible making ‘caucasian’ eyes. Why isn’t That an issue?
