Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman (VIDEO)
Joaquin Phoenix made a bizarre appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman Wednesday night to promote his new film “Two Lovers.”
Although many people, including Letterman himself, are poking fun of the actor, the awkward exchange made me cringe.
The usually handsome actor looks unkempt with his shaggy hair and beard, which, along with his unresponsiveness, leads Letterman to make a quip about the uni-bomber.
There is speculation that this is a put-on, however, it seems to me Joaquin is having some sort of mental meltdown.
He is clearly uncomfortable – giving one word answers for the questions he chooses to answer, becoming visibly annoyed with Letterman and the audience, and at one point has a nasty verbal exchange with Paul Shaffer.
In October Joaquin announced that he was done with acting, and planned to pursue a career as a hip-hop musician. Shortly after, he put his Hollywood Hills home on the market.

Being in recovery, married to a recovering addict, and also working at an impatient treatment facility, I see addicts, alcoholics, and people with mental disorders everyday. In my opinion, Joaquin is under the infleunce of some kind of sedative, maybe Xanax or Valium. He could also be drunk, but it is highly unlikely, being the way he was slow to responses and barely aware of what was going on. His speech was so slurred that I had to turn up my computer volume to max. It’s no secret that the Phoenix family has the addict gene, look what happend to River. Letterman is a jackass for making a joke out of something that very possibly could be life-threatening. And the audience was no better by pretty much heckeling Joaquin the whole time. Again, people want to stand by and watch someone burn instead of running to their side to help them. Hasn’t anyone learned from Brad Renfro or Heath Ledger? Of course not, and this is why I’m misanthropic.
Well it seems like this poor man is messed up a little bit. Letterman could have ben a lot harder on him than he was! He probably was struggling to fill the time and wondering what is going to happen next. The audience is used to Dave pulling fake pranks all the time and they probably thought this was some kind of faking between Phoenix and Letterman.
If Phoenix is on something I hope and pray he gets off of it.
poor Joaquin Phoenix, he seemed to trying really hard to re-invent his image and was coming across as just awkward
judging by Joaquin’s appearance on the Letterman show, he might be going through an identity crisis
I really believe this was a put on, it was just too funny, and I don’t think this good young actor would put himself in a position to be drunk or high on something in public. Naw! that was just a put on.
Im from Sweden, in Europe, and are always watching Letterman a lot on TV and this thing with Joaquin is as always a great laugh => a big joke.
Stiller was also great at the Oscars but “still” only a copy…
Lars, Lotus and joe.. you’re clearly all stupid. he’s positively messed up in this interview. he had no bearing on what was going on around him, no one would purposely put themselves through that for a laugh, im pretty sure the final result wasn’t the world laughing “with him”
its a sad thing he got allowed on stage
paaainfully funny
Honestly, I think he’s making a statement. I don’t think he’s really messed up, or if he is, he has a purpose behind it. I know that sounds nearly ridiculous, but Joaquin in unorthodox, as am I, and I would understand wanting to sort of hoax the media.
