Travis the chimpanzee

Travis the chimp, best known for his appearances in Coke and Old Navy commercials, was shot and killed on Monday in Stamford, Connecticut, after a vicious attack on 55-year-old Charla Nash.

The chimpanzee’s owner, Sarah Herold, had called Nash to assist her in getting Travis back in the house after he used a key to let himself out. Travis jumped on Nash and began biting and mauling her.

Herold called 911 when she was unable to pull the 200 pound chimp off her friend, then grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed her 15-year-old pet, which she said was “like her child.”

When police arrived, the chimp tried to get into one of the police cruisers, ripping off a side mirror, and trapping an officer inside. Police shot the animal several times when they were unable to subdue him.  He returned to the house and died inside.

Travis was being treated for Lyme disease, and it is not known whether medications could have played a role in the attack.  He was so agitated earlier in the day that Herold gave him Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication, in some tea.

Nash is currently in the hospital in critical condition.  Two police officers were also injured in the altercation.

  1. a CNN commentator made a good point about the impossibility of ever truly domesticating a wild animal, no matter how much you want it to to be domesticated

  2. This is not only the funniest story of the year thus far, but it is also the saddest story.

  3. Chimps should be in the jungle. Chimps like red meat. Chimps are known cannibals . Chimps hunt annd kill other chimps and other monkey species. Stop me

  4. i feel so sorry for travis!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. The real tragedy in this story is that Travis and Sandra were slated to begin marriage counseling next Tuesday.

A neighbor, Woody Fokker, told Fox 8 News, “Travis had been despondent lately, and had taken to drinking a lot of Mike’s Hard Lemonade. There were bottles all over the yard.”

He was known to be jealous of women, fueling rumors that he feared losing Sandra to a lesbian relationship.

It’s so sad to watch good love go bad.

  6. This could be an indication what anti-depressants do to the mind. God save our kids.

  7. you feel sorry for travis, what are you a chimp or an idiot? I would love to see footage of trav being pumped up with lead.

  8. David, you are the idiot. That chimp should have never been put in that situation living in a residential area. Being loaded with xanax.

Let’s collar you up, put you in the jungle and make you live there….the day you get upset and try to escape we watch the monkeys pummel you. Would that be fun?

  9. Duudee you guys all all so dummb..
Travis deserved to be killed, he flippin’ screwed up a chick’s face!!
how would you like your face to be torn. and ur hands biten off.. hmm tell me about that?

  10. Travis does not DESERVE to die. There could be another way to handle the situation instead of killing him but it’s done. Is it his fault that he’s living in this environment?

  11. There seems to be mixed feelings here about this but both the owner and the chimp were to blame. I sympothize with the victim and her family but ,what isn’t being said is that even though NO WILD ANIMAL SHOULD BE FORCED INTO A DOMESTIC SURROUNDING it went into instinct not “training” and this severe of an attack on humans is rare. Chimps are primates and we fall in the same biological family the difference is we inhabit every continent on the planet. People do your research before you even think of getting a wild animal, I want a damn penguin but I live in the southeast, and it probably wouldn’t work out to well and I have to accept that. Even people with deadly reptiles that outgrow their realm of care so they release them into the wild leaving the whatever it is to cross breed and now they’re all over the damn place. Just make responsible decisions rather it have short term or long term effects someone may very well get the dirty end of the stick… If I can end with saying I am a former Myrtle Beach EMT/Firefighter and currently work for a news company as a photographer and over time I have seen alot of bad things and its really sad at times like this when someone falls victim to another persons ignorance…

  12. Prime example why Chimps are suppose to be in the ZOO NOT your Freaking HOME!!!
What was she doing giving him pills that are meant for humans NOT animals???

I think this is the owners fault for being selfish and stupid and having a wild animal in her home!!
Wild animals shouldn’t be locked up in someone’s house!!

This lady is a freaking moron and should be held responsible!!!

  13. Could it be that Travis was pulling some sort of publicity stunt in the hopes that he might breathe some life into his waning career in advertising? Possibly he was imitating other Hollywood stars who’ve trashed hotel rooms or thrown telephones at desk clerks? It may be that he envisioned himself going on Leno and Letterman so that he could seek the sympathy of his mindless liberal fans who, rightfully, pass no judgments on him because they don’t know what it’s like to grow up an orphaned simian of color in an otherwise white, human, and species-ist environment… We could all have learnt a lot from that Travis, he was above us all, a well spring of wisdom and diverse chimp perspectives on our imperfect and violent human world; but alas his life was cut short by a policeman’s bullet! Damned Cops! :)

  14. who ever says they feel bad for travis should be shot just like him…are you kidding me??? that woman is screwed up for life..she has no nose, eyes or jaw..like wtf??!!!…the owner is a retard for giving him zannie bars in his tea….i just dont get stupid ppl

  15. I don’t care what anybody says, I too feel bad for the chimp and the victim, it’s not his fault he’s A WILD ANIMAL and he did what wild animals do when they feel threatened…they attack. He was raised and treated like a human but somewhere along the line they forgot he WASN’T HUMAN. Humans are to blame for vicious attacks like these not animals. I feel bad for animals that have to be killed and die over stupid people like this. Leave them where they belong and this never would have happened.

  16. chimpanzees belong in the wild, not in someones house. there should be some kind of law against keeping dangerous wild animals as pets. second of all they shouldn’t be on drugs because they don’t know all the side effects they can have on humans let alone on chimps.

i feel sorry for the woman who got attacked and i also feel sorry for the chimp and his owner. keeping wild animals captive is bad for everybody. something’s got to change, before some one else gets hurt.

  17. Okay…..
I have to say that I’m really appalled by the inconsiderate comments toward the HUMAN life that has been forever changed in this story. The comments on here about “Poor Travis” amaze me.
Yeah, he shouldn’t have been in captivity but he was and it seems to me that he was pretty happy with it.

The one who is suffering here is not the “Poor Owner” who lost her “Pet”. She should be held accountable if you ask me.
The one who is suffering is the woman who was attacked. That is true suffering.
    Where is your human compassion??????

I think anyone who wants to try and domesticate an animal who is clearly WILD, should have to be held accountable when something goes terribly wrong.

And why is that people are ALOUD to have such dangerous creatures in their homes.
Only 21 states ban this ridiculous human ingnorance.

And it’s true that it’s a shame that some people have to suffer at the hands of other peoples sheer stupidity!!!

  18. Bernard,
Xanax is not an antidepressant. It is a sedative. You know, a tranquilizer.

  19. Thic is truly a sad story on both sides. One life ruined one life lost. It all could have been avoided if the cages had been secured correctly and the animal handler had been more careful. She should not be able to keep any more animals. She should be hald accountable it ws all her fault
