Demaris Meyer and Morgan Freeman were involved in a car crash on July 31, 2008 near Charleston, Mississippi. Meyer and her high profile attorney, Gloria Allred have filed a lawsuit against the actor in Mississippi District Court.
Immediately following the accident it became apparent that all was not well in the Freeman household. The press labeled Meyer his 'mistress' and portrayed her as the reason for the breakup of Freeman's failed 24 year marriage with Myrna Colley-Lee. Meyer, in fact, had only met Freeman the evening of the accident and she is still extremely distressed that Freeman never set the record straight to the press regarding the 'mistress' rumors that were widely reported in the media.
According to the court filing, Meyer had accompanied her lawyer Bill Luckett and his wife to the Bayou Bend Golf and Country Club for a party on July 31, 2008. It was there that she chanced to meet Freeman for the first time. At the end of the evening, he offered to let her stay in one of the guest houses on his property, some forty miles away, because she would be in closer proximity to her place of employment the next morning.
The pair set out with Freeman behind the wheel of her car. When they were within five miles of his home, he lost control of the vehicle and drove it off the road, where it flipped multiple times before coming to rest in a ditch. Both he and Meyer sustained injuries and were hospitalized. He broke his arm and elbow and suffered shoulder damage. She suffered a blow to the head, her wrist was broken and she damaged her shoulder blade and shoulder joint. She spent four days in ICU after being airlifted to a Memphis medical facility.
The court documents claim that Freeman failed to keep a proper lookout, maintain attention, keep the vehicle under control and obey the posted speed limit. Demaris Meyer is suing for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, permanent disability, pain and suffering.
