Mayor Dean Grose Will Resign For ‘No Easter Egg Hunt This Year’ Email

Dean Grose - Los Alamitos Mayor Resigns

Los Alamitos, California mayor Dean Grose plans to resign after unleashing a fire storm of protest for the email postcard that he sent it to a small group of friends.  The caption read:  No Easter Egg Hunt This Year and showed the White House grounds planted as a watermelon patch.

One of the recipients of the email was a local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who publicly scolded the mayor for his actions.

According to Grose, “There is no way that I meant anything racist in my email.  I was merely criticizing Obama’s fiscal plan, which is so horrendous that it’s almost as if it were written by watermelons.”

The mayor, who claims to be “absolutely shocked” to be labeled a racist, has issued an apology to Price, her boss and indicates he will resign at the next City Council Meeting to be held on Monday night, March 2.    Los Alamitos is a small town of 12,000 people in Orange County.

  1. So what kind of threat did the Mayor receive from the liberal handlers???

  2. I think Obama is ruining the country, and normally, I think people act more offended than they are, or find things to be offended by when no racism was intended. But C’MON dude!! “. . .merely criticizing Obama’s fiscal plan, which is so horrendous that it’s almost as if it were written by watermelons.” Shyeah! That makes a lot of sense.

The chimp thing was entirely different. This was clearly racist, and the mayor should resign not only for sending this out, but for making the lamest excuse in the history of excuses.

  3. According to Grose, “There is no way that I meant anything racist in my email. I was merely criticizing Obama’s fiscal plan, which is so horrendous that it’s almost as if it were written by watermelons.”…what a friggin’ pathetic excuse that makes absolutely no sense. I am a 47 y.o. white male that admits to making racial jokes in my younger days but a long time ago I grew up and realized how utterly absurd and hurtful these jokes are. I grew up around extremely racist family members and racist people in communities I have lived in so I was influenced by this same crap. I am embarrassed that I indulged in this sort of thing but I have seen the error of my ways. This is a man of obvious low I.Q. that has never grown up. I googled his name and was able to see his photo. He looks like a true geek with big hair

  4. He got no threats…He got what was coming to him. That was stupid. Who would be so daft as to send around racist emails when there are black people living in the White House. The rightwing racists just can’t stand it, can they? Out of the woodwork with them I say! Racists won’t be treated with kid gloves anymore. Ha!

  5. I am OUTRAGED!!!! Either this man is so truly stupid that he recongized no rascist association…and if so, is too disconnected from society and should never serve on any government level.

If he actually isn’t disconnected to old fashioned racial stereotypes (which we all know is true), then he blatantly LIED (we know he did!!!) when he said he was just “wondering how they would dye the watermelons for the Easter Roll.” I’m SO ANGRY that he thinks his constituents are SO IGNORANT!!! How dare he insult their intelligence.

I’m caucasion, and find this so offensive, I’m LIVID. How did this archaic, rascist, insulting man ever get into politics? I’m not a constituent of that area, but it doesn’t matter. He is an insult to mankind.

I’m VERY SURE I’m in the majority when I speak my mind. I’m sorry for the insult he inflicted on America. He is an embarresment.

  6. It is okay for e-mail jokes to be sent around when Bush is in office. But, now that we have a black man in office, we have to walk on eggshells. Miss Price should have addressed this issue directly with Dean, not run to the press with it. I smell a lawsuit!!!

  7. It IS ok for email jokes to be sent around when Bush is in office, and no need for eggshells. It is more than OK to criticize the leader of the country for his DECISIONS, and moreover, in a democratic nation it is the responsibility of the citizens to do so. But this was not a commentary on his fiscal plan, or decisions – it was a cheap shot, a evocation of a racist and nasty image without any rational or intelligent basis, and most people will recognize it as such.

Yes, it is just an email. But our public leaders must earn the right to be called so by a number of qualifications, among them good judgment and the prioritization of their consitutents, and the nation as a whole. This mayor has been exposed for personal prejudices which are extreme enough to compromise his ability to make sound and well-reasoned decisions. And upon doing so, he failed in his job. He has taken upon himself, freely, a role which requires public trust, and that holds a higher obligation than protecting his own public relations image. We can forgive his failing as a person – we are all failible – but we cannot forgive his failing as a leader, and I am glad to hear that he has stepped down.

Kudos, Phillip. Prejudice is pretty human, but we all have a choice to be better than our fears. His error in judgment is forgivable, perhaps, but his cowardice in not taking responsibility – that is reprehensible. I hope he takes the opportunity to apologize, for himself, and for the people who trusted him, and who know better than to excuse it.
