Michelle Obama Plants A White House Kitchen Garden
Michelle Obama and White House chef Sam Kass have cooked up an idea that they hope will engage and excite First daughters Sasha and Malia about the prospect of growing and eating their vegetables. Not since the Victory Garden, orchestrated by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1940’s, has the ground been tilled for the express purpose of growing organic vegetables and fruit.
The First Lady was on hand, along with some Washington D.C. school children, to break ground on the little plot of land that will provide produce for the White House kitchen and an area soup kitchen. Mrs. Obama told the visiting children that the garden will yield mint, lettuce, berries and herbs. She also shared the fact that the Obama girls are a little taken aback by the idea of a beehive, which will also be part of the project.
The girls recently were surprised to find a new swing set had been installed while they were in school, visible from the Oval Office. They are also anxiously anticipating the arrival of a new puppy in April.
