    I feel for the families of the officers, and have limited sympathy for the Mixon family too… there are no winners here.

    Somehow I think Lovelle’s parents could have done something different to help keep him from becoming a killer. They raised him didn’t they? Instilling values in your child is your solemn responsibility as a parent. I know you cannot be held responsible for the actions of another person, but Lovelle’s parents have to wonder what they could have done to help prevent this.

    It makes me sick how this type of thing is probably only going to get worse with California’s budget crisis and having to release more convicts into society.

    Curious, do you really have to ask what S. Baum meant with his post? This is the worst thing that can happen for race relations.

    Look at the mug shot of Lovelle – I would never want to be near a guy who has that look in his eye like he’d kill you just as soon as look at you.

    Like I said, no winners here – except, maybe society wins a little bit because Lovelle won’t have another chance to break the law ever again, or hurt innocent people ever again.

    This is tragic…no two ways about it. My heart goes out to the families, and to the fellow police officers of these guys that were putting themselves on the line to keep the community safe.

    Now – for the race baiters here…save it. This was an evil act, perpetrated by an evil individual that was unwilling to repay his debt to society and obey the laws of society. Yes. He was Black. Yes, he was in Oakland, and YES, Oakland has a crime problem. NO, this has nothing to do with Black people that work hard and maintain a respectable, prosperous lifestyle. The death of a single innocent Black person is no more acceptable than that of a White one. Period. No excuses.     So much distrust. Sad. Even sadder, I can understand why. Blacks in Oakland don’t trust cops for reasons that make sense given the environment. And likewise, cops are harsh and sometimes unfair to law abiding Black folks. It’s a cycle.

    Please don’t take this tragedy as a reason to incite hatred. The scum is dead, as he should be. And the families of four innocents are in mourning. Focus on them; pray for them. And let the lives of the deceased speak for themselves.

    This murderer was already *completely* banned from possessing all firearms due to his felony conviction.     The law is for everyone and the OPD, BPD and the SFPD will have re-gained my respect If and When they rid their departments of Racially Prejudiced, Class Conscious and Ethically Corrupt members. I personally know for a fact that there are corrupt and racist officers in each of these “Police Departments”.

    It is a shame that society does not seem to be interested in riding ourselves of Institutional Police Corruption and Institutional Police Racism. As I said in the beginning, This is a terrible tragedy! But if anyone is to blame, then everyone is to blame because everything is interrelated: education, mental/health care, racism in the job market, racism in the housing market, racism in the credit markets, etc. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and nothing happens by accident.

    I am torn between two sides of this fence. I am a Black school teacher, who teaches in an impoverished neighborhood in Oakland. I had students who could relate to the young man who killed those officers. They thought he was a hero because their run-ins with police have been less than desirable; and some who felt guilty because they thought the killing was wrong. I understand their feelings but I also spoke with two of these officers on numerous occassions and can honestly say that they harbored no ill will toward any particular group and am sadden by their families lost. This is just a sad commentary on where we are as Americans. “Why” said slavery is over? I am not certain about that but his attitude toward “savages” in Oakland is astounding because he too is one of those “savages” that would wish people dead because of their personal encounters with law enforcement. The fact is that the weapons supporting the Drug Cartels in Mexico come primarily from the “Iron River” of weapons coming from the Unites States flowing South as the Drugs flow North.

    An important question is: “Who produces these weapons and how are they diverted from the factories and store rooms of the gun manufacturers like “Smith & Wesson” to the streets?”. It seems almost impossible to me that the gun manufacturers can not control to whom they sell their weapons. Maybe we should investigate and resolve how the vast majority of these guns are being diverted. Who would most benefit by an increased number of sales – regardless of to whom the weapons are sold? The big winners financially are the gun manufacturers.

    I lived in Oakland when I was a kid. One day my brother and I bought a .303 British Enfield (this is a WW2 bolt action rifle). We paid $40 for the rifle and walked about 3 miles across Oakland carrying the gun home. This was 1962 and I was 12 years old. As we walked an OPD officer pulled up alongside, cruising very slowly, and checking us out. My brother and I nodded at the cop. He nodded back and drove on.

    In 1968 the U.S. adopted the Gun Control Laws of Nazi Germany and a 12 year old could no longer buy a rifle.

    I have NEVER had a problem with the Oakland Police Department. But then, I’ve not done time for armed robbery, I’ve not kidnapped and raped a twelve year old girl, and I’ve not been a suspect in a murder.

    My one question in this Lovelle Mixon matter is this: How did this guy Mixon get the drop on two Oakland motorcycle cops?

    None of this has anything to do with race. It has to do with the fact that an individual was pulled over by the police, and rather than cooperating, pulled a gun and killed them. The race of the parolee and the officers is irrelevant, where this happened is irrelevant. What happened afterward, with the killing of two additional officers, and the parolee himself, was collateral damage brought on solely by the parolee’s actions during the traffic stop. If he couldn’t handle prison, he should have worked on possible alternatives with his parole officer – that’s what they’re there for. If he doesn’t talk to his parole officer, only he is to blame. All that said, I hope that from now on when the police attempt to detain an individual convicted of a violent crime and only recently on parole, that they treat him as armed and dangerous for their own sake. It’s not disrespectful to the parolee, it’s common sense.

    For example while Mixon’s incident actually brought out cheers, rallies, and inspired websites all cheering his actions as somehow “putting it to the man”, the DHS has used a similar incident in Pittsburgh where a white shooter named Richard Polawaski to target conservatist, gun owners, even people with pro-life and Ron Paul bumper stickers are named.     It’s amazing that two so similar incidents can be viewed and utilized by groups in such different ways BASED on the race of the shooter. Unconfirmed reports by left-wing rags note that Richard Polawaski killed cops because he was worried about Obama banning guns, a minor bit of research reveals this guy was seriously sick, probably much like Mixon, but the left use this to paint with broad strokes and further their agenda.

    Lets be honest about a few things we have always had race issues in this country. We have exacerbated those at times with large government programs like The Great Society and LBJ. While well-intentioned it created a matriarchal society which fueled many issues and perpetuated the broken family, poverty and crime for both blacks and some whites. For whatever good it did for individuals it adversely affected a generation.

    The amazing conundrum is that slavery which is what all of this is blamed on is not unique to the USA; it’s not even unique to Africans who were brought here. Africans conquered and traded other tribes to the British, French and Spanish. Jews were the slave class of the Egyptians (black race) for over 400 years, if you study history you will find whites have also been enslaved even in this country. So even a cursory look will reveal that although slavery has been practiced (unfortunately) all over the world with many races since recorded history, the USA is the only country that spent hundreds of thousands of lives to end slavery within its borders.

    Anyone who believes that race doesn’t affect nearly every aspect of our lives, our news, and our political agendas has the intellect of an ant and the understanding of a miry clod of clay in a primordial swap. Race is used to divide us and to allow those who seek it to usurp power on every level. Race my friends is Americans unique Kryptonite, or WMD you decide.
