Alec Baldwin Mail Order Bride Joke Causes Uproar (Video)
30 Rock star Alec Baldwin was joking around recently on The Late Show with David Letterman about getting himself a mail-order bride from the Philippines. His flip comedic statement might have been a mistake. In fact, he has angered a Phillipine Senator, who is hitting back hard with a prediction that the actor may face violence if he ever visits.
The actor is no stranger to controversy. The public divorce between Baldwin and actress Kim Bassinger became a ‘he said, she said’ war of words that played out on the world stage. It even caused a heated controversy involving his 13 year old daughter Ireland, when a taped conversation that the actor left on her cell phone hit the internet. In the audio tirade, he unleased a firestorm of rage on his daughter, calling her a thoughtless little pig.
Baldwin told Letterman that he would love to have more children. He explained to the talk show host that he is “thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point…or a Russian one.”
Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla called Baldwin arrogant and labeled his remarks insensitive, uncalled for and an insult to millions of Filipinos. Revilla went on to say that it is against the law to buy a “mail-order” bride. In what sounded very much like a threat, he said, “Let him try to come here to the Philippines and he’ll see mayhem.”

Filipinos should fuss about Alec Baldwin’s joke. They should stop being so sensitive. Shouldn’t the Russians be complaining too? Alec Baldwin should not apologize. Teri Hatcher and the BBC shouldn’t have apologized either. What they’ve all said has a basis. Medical practice is crappy in the Philippines except for those who can afford expensive hospitals (sad but true). Also, a lot of Filipinos end up as maids in other countries, but (take note) not majority of Filipinos. And, Filipina mail-order brides DO exist, despite the law against it (although it is not the majority of the Filipinas). Filipinos should face these truths and actually do something about it so that the rest of the world may stop making jokes about these situations. The better thing to do for Senator Revilla is to see to the enforcement of the Anti Mail Order Bride Law and other laws instead of threatening to beat up Alec Baldwin.
oversensitive, retarded, bs
i’m part filipino and think it’s a funny joke
people love to cry racism over the dumbest bs
Hey Daisy and tony or whoever you are guys, I respect your opinions and you should also respect ours. Filipinas are not for sale period!!!
Well you know, if Filipino women and Asian women from poorer Asian countries weren’t so hell-bent on throwing themselves to white men who visit their counties, the stereotype probably wouldn’t exist. Yes, it’s a FACT that poor, single Filipino women actively seek to seduce white men, such as US military personnel, and travelers who visit the Philippines in order to score a relationship and plane or boat ticket back to the states. They also now use the internet and seek to become “pen-pals” with men in the US in order for them to become mail-order brides. It’s common practice, and even encouraged by Filipino families. Once the bride is in the states, the entire or most of the family earns a ticket to the states as well. That’s how it works. Many times, the bride dumps the white guy after the deed is done.
Yes, the comment Baldwin made was rather Joe Biden-esque, but he stated a fact that wasn’t even meant to be malicious. It was a joke.
Rather than be angry at Baldwin for making the joke and threatening violence, perhaps the Philippine senator should be more focused on being an advocate for poor Filipino families and women being able to be successful, prosperous and have access to ways to make an honest living. If you look at it’s history, the Philippines is a great example of how the few and the rich rule the poor through greed and corruption. It is a country with a very corrupt government and one can almost say that greed is in Filipino blood. Ferdinand Marcos and Imelda Marcos… need I say more?
Kay, Filipinas ARE for sale. Look it up. Happens all the time. that is why it is so funny!
The problem is that this is true. The Philippines have mail order brides. Why are these people getting offended by this comment? Lighten up! Too santingkene! I’m a Flip, btw.
