Air France Flight AF 447 Status: Missing (Photos, Video)
UPDATE June 19, 2009 - Air France announced today that they will give $24,000 to each family of the victims of the crash of AF 447. The money is to be considered an advance, according to Air France chief executive Phillipe Gourgeon. He said, “We are going to be very focused on the first advance that is paid for each victim.” He stressed that there were no strings attached to accepting the advance.
Gourgeon went on to say that Air France is planning to hold a memorial for all of the victims of the May 31 crash. This comes on the heels of some harsh criticism that the airline has received from some families of victims who have accused Air France of a lack of sympathy and failure to provide timely investigation information.
Air France Airbus A330-200 jet, registration #F-GZCP, bound for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, disappeared off the radar screen at 1:33 a.m. ET. According to Air France officials, the flight encountered electrical problems in stormy weather.
The flight from Rio de Janeiro, carrying 216 passengers and a crew of 12 crashed into the ocean. The passenger roster lists 126 men, 82 women, seven children and a baby, in addition to the crew of three pilots and 9 flight attendants.
The passenger roster listed the majority of travelers on board AF 477 were from Brazil (58), France (61) and Germany (26). The remaining victims (83) were from 29 other countries.
Two American’s on board the downed plane were Michael Harris, 60, and his wife Anne, 54. He was a geologist working in Rio, and heading to Paris for a training session and vacation – photo below.
A massive search has been underway near the island of Fernando de Noronha in the Atlantic Ocean, 226 miles from the Brazilian coast. Brazilian squadrons have been combing the waters in a recovery effort. They are especially intent on recovering the cockpit data and voice recorders, which will give valuable clues as to what occurred to bring the jetliner down. The ‘black boxes’ are equipped with pinging devices that are designed to emit a signal for 30 days.
The “black box” is actually an orange cylinder–about 13 pounds of metal wrapped around a stack of memory chips and designed to withstand the force of being slammed high-speed into a brick wall. It is believed that the devices are two miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
Searchers are desperately seeking these boxes in order to discover what went on in the cockpit during the final moments of flight. Microphones in the boxes would have picked up conversations between the crew members, even those not broadcast to air traffic controllers. Other vital data about the plane’s equipment and systems, crucial to finding the cause of the crash, are contained in those metal boxes.
UPDATE: June 2, 2009 - A Brazilian pilot spotted potential wreckage in the Atlantic Ocean. The debris field included what was believed to be an airplane seat, an orange life vest, a small oil drum, small white bits of material and metal. The site was spotted 447 miles from the target area, the island of Fernando de Noronha, and some 50 miles from the airplanes charted flight path. After further review, the debris was ruled ocean trash, having nothing to do with the downed airliner.
Four work teams have been set up to investigate the crash. The first group will be assigned wreckage and black box recovery. The second group will delve into the plane’s maintenance history. Group three will be checking into the operations of the plane. The fourth group will be going over the aircraft’s systems & equipment.
UPDATE: June 6, 2009 – Two male bodies were recovered from the ocean, one of them has been identified as a passenger. A backpack containing a laptop and an immunization card, and a briefcase containing an Air France flight 447 plane ticket were also recovered. See video below.
Eleven planes and seven vessels from five countries are involved in the search. The remains to the two men were taken to the medical examiners office in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco.
UPDATE: June 7, 2009 – On Sunday, search crews worked their way through a sea of debris, and have now recovered a total of seventeen bodies. Officials indicate that of that number, at least four are male and four are female. All will be transported to a morgue in Recife. Additionally, a section of the plane wing, at least two seats and a significant amount of luggage had also been removed from the water. Each item is considered forensic evidence and will be thoroughly examined by French investigators. See new video with photos below.
UPDATE: June 9, 2009 – Eight more bodies were recovered on Monday, bringing the total number to 24. The search is now being aided by fourteen aircraft, along with five Brazilian ships and one French frigate. The U.S. Navy is sending two high-tech acoustic devices to listen for the pinging sound of the still missing black boxes.
UPDATE: June 10, 2009 – On Tuesday the 41 recovered bodies were taken by helicopter to Fernando de Noronha for autopsies. Helicopters reportedly hovered over navy ships while they were still moving to offload the victims, whose bodies have been kept in refrigerated units since their recovery.
Forensic pathologists will be looking for evidence of burn marks, trauma injuries, water in the lungs, and other tell-tale signs that might lead investigators to arrive at what really happened to AF 447. Their other prime objective is to identify the remains so that they can be returned to their families for burial. See new video below.
UPDATE: June 17, 2009 - Autopsies have revealed fractures in the legs, hips and arms of Air France disaster victims, injuries that strongly suggest the plane broke up in the air, according to experts. Investigators are beginning to understand what may have happened, after the examination of 50 bodies and 400 bits of debris that have been recovered.
According to a Brazilian medical examiner, “Typically, if you see intact bodies and multiple fractures–arm, leg, hip fractures–it’s a good indicator of a midflight break up–especially if you’re seeing large pieces of aircraft as well.”

Hoping on a miracle to happen !
I have recently watched a show on National Geographic about magnetic reversal and the South Atlantic Anomaly see:

The Hubble and other satellites has to shut down it’s equipment when passing through this to keep from destroying it. This plane was in this area when it reported electrical problems.
Something to think about.
It’s certainly sounds like there is conflicting information about the plane. Some information says the plane is new and had an especially flight crew because of this. Elsewhere information is being presented that states that the plane had over 18,000 flight hours on it which is hardly new. I wonder which is true?

“The aircraft had totalled 18,870 flight hours and went into service on 18 April 2005. Its last maintenance check in the hangar took place on 16 April 2009.”

Given that the Aircraft Commander did not even have the time to send a May Day message, it appears that events took place extremely quickly. Did the Aircraft Commander have any knowledge of the weather from ground stations whereby he could have flown either above or below the weather, or even around it? Sounds like a massive break-up of the aircraft in mid-air caused maybe initially by the lightning strike, along with cabin decompression and severe turbulence. I remember many years a Pan Am Boeing 707 going down in Elkton, Maryland, USA which was caused by lightning – a rare incident for those times but still something that perhaps should not be ruled out today.

19,000 hours is about right for a 4+ year old airliner and in spite of your doubts, this means that the airplane WAS nearly new.
A GPS receiver doesn’t work underwater unless you have an antenna on the surface.
All flight crews receive a throrough briefing on the weather along and near their route. And they have radar to look at the weather in real time. Plus, they have long range communications (HF and SATCOM) to receive updates. Going above the weather isn’t always possible. Going under it is usually more dangerous. Going around it is at the discretion of the crew.
I will admit, though, that in Hollywood, a 747 can continue to have its lights on, and no flooding in the cabin, even as it sits at the bottom of the ocean. So I suppose anything that’s seen on TV is certainly plausible, if not downright possible.

Just check out the Intellicast.com Atlantic Infrared satelite animated loop – there’s a line of storms all the way across from Brazil to Africa. This morning they were worse. Maybe you should check the weather before getting on an airplane. The search crews will be flying in there too!

Reasons to believe that the Air France flight 447 disappearance was a terrorist attack
1. The Air France Airbus A330 with General Eletric’s engine is one of the most reliable airplanes. It has topnotch aviation technology. No communication AT ALL from the pilot and only two automatic messages from the plane – electrical failure and depressurization – could be the last two things the airplane computer detected before totally exploding.
2. The media and the French/Brazilian authorities are speculating that the plane was hit by a lightning bolt. Have you ever heard about a plane that crash because a lighting bolt? And according to experts that plane is prepared for a lighting bolt discharge.
3. It is much more easy to pass through security with a bomb in Rio than in Paris.
4. Last month it was announced a new French military basis on UAE. Its new base will host up to 500 French troops and include a navy base, air base, and training camp. Really close to Iran. There’s a lot of extremists in UAE that could potentially finance terrorism.
5. The Tri-Border ( Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil) is a place that extremists could be easily hiding theirselves from interpol and worldwide authorities. That region is very easy to cross from one country to another. Big diverse communities there – if you walk on the streets there you will notice business are conducted in Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese or Arab. A big black market for electronics and imported goods from China. There’s a perfect combination there for illegal activities.
6. A Brazil’s military blog dennounces that high intelligence official mentioned that a high al-qaeda member terrorist was arrested in São Paulo.
All the passengers should be alive. Thats my only prayer.
They should look deeper in the islands.
She may also probably sank with enough pressure to keep the passengers alive,
maybe they must just a satellite scan over the ocean and under the water.

In all honesty, its all over. Condolences to the families of the victims. Flying at midnight C.E.T over the Atlantic ocean in a terrible storm only spells one thing… The end. Planes with wing attached engines are near impossible to safely crash land in water. Let alone one as big as the A330. It simply breaks up to pieces. Additionally, and probably even more important, this plane was only 35% through its flight, therefore may still may still have had 40 – 50,000 liters of fuel on board – not good. I suspect this is what the Brazilian pilot spotted 30-45 mins after the plane went missing – buring fuel on the ocean surface. I am South African and a lot of this nightmare reminds me of the Helderberg disaster of the Mauritian coast in Nov 1987. It is a tragedy, but one we must learn from very quickly.
The Heir of the Brazilian Throne, Prince Pedro Luis de Orleans e Braganca, was the target in the Air France flight 447.
If this is true, I pray that God gives strength to all the relatives of victims to bear such a huge loss in their families.

THERE ARE PROBABLY SOMEWHERE FLOATING IN THE OCEAN,WHERE DID ALL THE TECHNOLOGY GO TO.
I find it amazing that with today’s technology, there are still gaps in the transmission signals over the Atlantic. Will it help to install a manned Radar Tower on St. Peter and St Paul rocks islands to keep constant communication with planes flying over the mid-Atlantic ridge? It’s surely possible!!!!!!! WHY DON’T THEY EVER THINK OF IT? And the possibility of a terror attck can’t be ruled out especially with a high profile passenger on board and drug cartels in Brazil. Wait and see, trust my word.
What is really weird is that very little pieces were found, even with an explosion …bomb…fuel…any of this there is got to be more out there . And if so? where ? If those bodies were filled up with watter , they should have come up and stay above the watter .

Sincere condolences to anybody affected by this tragedy. I knew nobody on the flight. I live thousands of kilometres from both Brazil and Paris, yet this has touched many thousands, possibly millions, of people just like me. To those left behind, may you find the strength to accept. What a way – no facts but i’m sure it couldn’t have been pleasant – to go. My hope is that it was over fast – the opposite is just too horrendous to consider.

condolences….. i have dreamt 10 days before that aeroplane crashed.. When I said to my friend, she said that this dream holds meaning… i thought i have aeroplane phobia so may be thats why i dreamt….. but getting this news really terrified me

There is even more evidence that Flight 447 went down by a terrorist attack of some sort:
1. Among the passengers were 5 Arabs from Lebanon. Just a coincidence? Or another islamic terrorist group on a suicide mission?
2. There was a high profile passenger on the plane, 26-year-old Pedro Luíz de Orléans e Bragança, king of Brazil. A recent article says that he was passionate about Brazil returning to a monarchy. Was he a target? Did he have political enemies? There should be an investigation into this.

3. As stated by many news stations and Air France, it is a fact that Airbus cannot be crashed when hit by a lightning or thunderbolt. So what brought down the plane? The thunderstorm? Or a bomb? More proof for a terrorist attack. See point 1 above.

Nice try, except the plane was flying 190km lower and 6000km north-north-east of the South Atlantic Anomaly. Protip: Airplanes are not satellites. Otherwise radiation would kill people inside flying planes. Duh.
Whether terrorist or electrical failure, we need be careful where blame is placed. 228 people are to be remembered from this. One of the best ways to commemorate these people is to spread the knowledge. What you are sure of should be told to everyone in the community. This has reached thousands of people maybe even millions some think. Keep spreading, this should not be forgotten. God or not, my heart and soul goes out to the people aboard flight 447 wishing with everything I have for a miracle. you never know what you have until you lose it, and once you lose it, you can never have it back.

My first thought when I heard the news was THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE. After looking at a map on where it it situated, and where the plane was, it could be possible that the plane was sucked in by the triangle.
One thing I predicted which MAY be possible is The Bermuda Triangle. It’s a phenomenon, nobody knows where the stuff & people disappeared go. that’s what I’m believing anyway.
Science is playing hard… yet it cant beat nature… this is an example… feel sorry for the passengers family…;(

It looks like the rear portion of the plane fell down first. When the rear end portion was detached, some people already fell but the plane continue to fly a miles more before it finally went down.
That’s why all they can see right now are just few people and some rear portion of the plane. This is just the first crash site where the rear portion of the plane & some people have fallen.
Most of the people and plane debris might be miles more away from the initial site they are searching right now. The investigators need to look for the crash site of the second portion of the plane.
Feel so sad for all the passengers including the extraordinary photographer, who kept his cool even in his last moments of life and took this photo. Hats off to him!!!
Few days before the world saw the disappearance of an A330 Air Frane during a trans Atlantic flight between Rio to Paris. Very ironic that a day before I got a mail of the photos taken by a passenger on a flight mins after a mid air collision, and mins before the crash of the said aircraft
Two shots taken inside the plane before it crashed. Unbelievable! Photos taken inside the GOL B 737 aircraft that was involved in a mid air collision and crashed…..
A B737 had a mid air collision with the Embraer Legacy while cruising at 35,000 feet over South America.. The Embraer Legacy, though seriously damaged with the winglet ripped off, managed to make a landing at a nearby airstrip in the midst of the Amazon jungle. The crew and passengers of the Embraer Legacy had no idea what they had hit. The B737
however crashed, killing all crew and passengers on board.
The two photos attached were apparently taken by one of the passengers in the B737, just after the collision and before the aircraft crashed. The photos were retrieved from the camera’s memory stick. You will never get to see photos like this. In the first photo, there is a gaping hole in the fuselage through which you can see the tailplane and vertical fin of the aircraft. In the second photo, one of the passengers is being sucked out of the gaping hole.
These photos were found in a digital Casio Z750, amidst the remains in Serra do Cachimbo. Although the camera was destroyed, the Memory Stick was recovered. Investigating the serial number of the camera, the owner was identified as Paulo G. Muller, an actor of a theatre for children known in the outskirts of Porto Alegre. It can be imagined that he was standing during the impact with the Embraer Legacy and during the turbulence, he managed to take these photos, just seconds after the tail loss the aircraft plunged.. So the camera was found near the cockpit. The structural stress probably ripped the engines away, diminishing the falling speed, protecting the electronic equipment but not unfortunately the victims. Paulo Muller leaves behind two daughters, Bruna and Beatriz.
Flight Data Recorder/s have not been recovered so far and the most accurate cause of the unfortunate crash cannot be known untill then.
I WOULD SUGGEST THAT ALL THE DATA BEING RECORDED ON THESE RECORDERS BE SIMULTANEOUSLY TRANSMITTED TO A SIMILAR RECORDER AT A LAND STATION. i BELIEVE IT WOULD NOT REQUIRE A MAJOR MODIFICATION IN THE THE SYSTEM BUT WILL DEFINITELY MAKE MORE THAN 90% FLIGHT DATA INFORMATION ,AVAILABLE, LONG BEFORE THE FDR/BLACK-BOXES ARE RECOVERED. IN FACT THIS ARRANGEMENT WILL BE AN ENHANCED PRESENT SYSTEM BY WHICH SOME INFO. ABOUT THE PLAIN’S AIR SPEED ETC WAS RECEIVED.

I Am very touched by what has happend.
So Many inocent people were on that flight going home to see their familys children or just to go on holiday. And they didnt even have a chance to see their loved ones. I Am very confussed to how this all happend i am ever SOO SOO sorry to all the peoples familys and my preyers are with you.. Just think now . All of the men all of the women and the children and the todler is in a safer place now and god is with them. There are 2 pics floating around on the internet. Saying that a passenger on Air France (Paulo G Muller) took them as the plane was breaking up. The pics look real, but with the ability to photo shop these days…I would not be surprised if they are not real. I do not see any news about a recovered memory stic with pictures in any news story. does any one know if they pics are real?
what if they will also include a video recorder in an aircraft like this?? so that they can have a video file f what had happened during the flight or any crash. . . just a though. . .

Some 50 bodies have been recovered. All appear to have multiple bone fractures (hip, legs, arms). Moreover, the bodies were not strapped in seats. Coupled with large pieces of the plane found including the tail, experts suggest the plane broke up in the sky. It might have found itself in a flat spin after losing its entire electrical and communications systems.
There has been no reported evidence of burn marks on bodes or debris. This suggests that there was no bomb or explosion as some speculated. Some speculated the targets were two high ranking anti-drug investigators from South America.
There is an extremely rare but very powerful form of lightening that strikes from below that Duke University researches have discovered. Could that have been the cause of the electrical failure given the severe weather environment that night?
Also we can’t rule out the South Atlantic Anomaly, where it has been discovered that the Earth’s magnetic field has collapsed, potentially exposing a 3 million square mile area off the coast of Brazil to deadly electromagnetic radiation from the Sun (gamma rays, cosmic rays) which can knock out electronic communications systems and destroy DNA. Astronomers report there was solar flare activity on the Sun the day before the plane went down.
Some think the tail was in the wrong position and was broken off by the storm. This would have led to a rapid decrease in cabin pressure, electrical failure and certain death for the passengers and crew.
Air France reported this week it will be 18 months before it can make a full report. They did not find the black boxes but will try again this fall to see if they can locate them.
This is quite a mystery with many different possibilities and scenarios. It will be interesting to find out what the final report says.
