David Letterman Controversial ‘Palin’ Monologue (VIDEO)
David Letterman may have gone beyond good taste in several jokes he made during his Tuesday night monologue. He was speaking about the fact that Sarah Palin and her family, including 14-year-old Willow Palin, were in town for a Repubican fund raising event and he proceeded to paint a scenario where they took in a Yankees game.
He suggested that Palin’s daughter got “knocked-up” by third baseman Alex Rodriguez during the 7th inning. Dave took it a step farther by saying “The hardest part of her visit to New York was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter.”
Apparently Sarah and Todd Palin were not amused. They took the matter to their Facebook pages, with Todd saying “Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old daughter are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”
Governor Palin, as you might well imagine, had more to say on the subject:
“Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands–that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”
Did ol’ Dave go too far this time? Check out the controversial video clips below.
UPDATE: June 10, 2009 - Dave responded to the Palin’s comments during his Wednesday night show. We’ve included that video below too. See June 15 REAL apology here.

The Palins represnt the very WORST in parenting, in values, and in America. Dave should take as many shots as he possibly can.
Oh, get over it, you hypocritical, myopic dweebs! If this was Limbaugh joking about Hillary, you’d all be laughing your shorts off and passing it to all of your friends, and you know it.
You lost the damned election already! Deal with it, and quit pretending to be so “offended” by anyone who makes fun of your precious right-wing robotoids.
Only people who are PRETENDING offense to get attention would even think to assume he was talking about the 14-year-old. Lest we forget, Palin was/is the great defender of the abstinance-only approach to sex “education”… even after her own unwed daughter got pregnant (and well before she was 18, btw).
If Palin needs the like of you to “defend her honor”, then she really is as helplessly incompetent as she appears. Thank God the US voters saw through all of her crap–and yours!
Just when you think Letterman can’t go any lower , he does and substancially. The joke’s weren’t even funny at any level especially the one aimed at a 14 year old. Oh sorry Dave I forgot that in your totally insincere apology you said it wasn’t the 14 year old you were targeting it was the 18 year old. And lets not forget refering to Sarah Palin as a “slutty airline stewardess” almost in the same breath. If anyones a slut here its Letterman.
Doesn’t CBS at least have some decency to issue a sincere apology if Letterman doesn’t have the contrition or brains to do it ? I mean we are talking ratings here which is whats important.
Where is Alex Rodriguez in this , how does he feel about being smeared ? Where is the public out rage by decent citizens over this ? Where is the apology from CBS ? ,well don’t hold your breath, unless this hurts them in the bank account there will be no apology. A TV station that allows this kind of so called humor to go out over its airwaves shouldn’t be watched.
…the joke just wasn’t funny. I don’t mean offensive, just a bland throwaway gag. Dull. No one would have blinked if the Palins hadn’t caused an entirely foolish ruckus over something so minimal. So his writers didn’t look deep enough into their visit to know it wasn’t the older daughter who attended. Who gives a crap; I wouldn’t even have known that it was the wrong daughter if, again, the Palins hadn’t overreacted. It would have completely been forgotten about.
“…acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”
Wow. Way to take a crappy joke and turn it into the most irredeemable detriment of the century. The comment would have been forgotten about, and ignored entirely by many, without this stink.
thanks for having the videos, they were hilarious, couldn’t find them anywhere else. dave is the greatest!
Tacky is tacky! I get a kick out of a good joke just like everyone else but when you make fun of a young girl and her teenage pregnacy then it has gone too far! Regardless of who her mother is, she should have been taboo for such insensitive and cruel comments. I used to be a fan of Letterman but now I have lost all respect for him as a person and a comedian!
typical of palin to TRY and make it sound like letterman was talking about her 14 year old when it was obvious it was a shot at the older one for sleeping around so young
only somone like palin would go out of there way to make this into a huge issue, and just give that much more coverage to it without regard to how it may affect her 14 year old daughters life
sad parenting, when you use every oppurtunity to get on tv that you can even at expense of your own loved ones
Regardless of your political views-this remark/’joke’ is NOT funny or appropriate. This cannot be denied…..Letterman realized that, and he apologized claiming he will try to be better in the future. (and please do not tell me he was forced to apologize-that makes him seem like an even bigger fool).
Did you see his ‘apology’? He had to have his side-kick tell him the names of the people he offended-that doesn’t seem ‘heart-felt’ to me.
I realize that there are tasteless comments made by both parties, but we are talking about a child here!!! Even though the comment was supposedly directed at an 18 year-old, does that make it ok?…to verbally attack a child-because he didn’t intend for the jab to be directed at the younger of the children, but instead her older sister?!!?
He isn’t funny-he’s immature-he’s past his prime-he thinks he’s above the rest because of his political views. What a closed-minded-bafoon; unwilling to hear any other opinion. I’ve never watched his show and I never will.
oh-and to ‘fedor’…….you are obviously not a parent (if you are….not a very GOOD one!)
Should Palin have just kept quiet about a nasty sexual comment made about ANY of her children??! If she kept quiet-how would THAT affect her daughter??
Twenty years ago I was a fan of Lettermans. Now he’s old and dried up and should retire. The comment was uncalled for regardless which daughter it was.
What crap! Letterman has for years been a standard of late night TV and his jokes (some better than others) were and are always to the point. Palin is a stupid, uneducated self-absorbed, arrogant nobody and should shut up when it comes to human values. Someone who confuses countries and continents and exploits her own children for political campaigns should not complain about others making appropriate jokes about her children, whether they are under or overage, particularly, that she paid her daughter’s boyfriend enough to keep him quiet once and for all (again for her political gains). What hypocrisy!!!
She is so stupid and dangerous that she should be denied even the right to speak publicly, let alone complain about Letterman
I wonder if David would have been so inclined and witty to make such a statement about Willow if her dad had of been in the audience?
