Pro Golfer Ken Green: RV Crash Kills Girlfriend, Brother (PHOTOS)
Pro golfer Ken Green of Danbury, CT, was involved in a horrific RV crash on Monday near Jackson, Mississippi. He is hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center with eye and leg injuries. His longtime girlfriend Jeannie Hodgin, 52, and his older brother William Green, 56, who served as his caddie, were both killed.
The PGA Champions Tour player reportedly lost control when the right front tire blew out on his large RV. The vehicle swerved off the road and went down an embankment and crashed into a large tree – see photos below. Green’s two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. None of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the police report.
Ken Green’s lawyer and longtime friend Jack Garamelia said that the pro golfer suffered a very serious leg injury, which required immediate surgery. Doctors indicate that they are fighting to save Green’s leg from possible amputation. The golfer also suffered a severe eye injury.
Green was the fourth top money winner on the PGA Tour in 1988 and was a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 1989. Green joined the Champions Tour in 2008 with his first outing at the British Open. He has had eleven starts, including a seventh-place finish in the AT&T Classic in March 2009. He earnings on the tour have been $123,906.
Green tied for 37th in the Triton Financial Classic in Austin, Texas over the past weekend. He was planning to play in an upcoming qualifying round for the Senior Open Championship, that begins on July 20 in Birkshire, England.
UPDATE: On September 28, 2009 a Friends of Green benefit golf tournament was held at Ridgewood Country Club in Ken’s hometown of Danbury, Connecticut. There were 25 teams who happily paid $5,000 to raise money to help defray the cost of medical expenses for their hometown hero.
Green continues to recover from a lower right leg amputation but was on hand to greet his friends and fellow golfers at the event and take the first shot. He even played part of a round recently on his prosthetic leg and hopes to really get back in the swing once he gets his next prosthesis, which will have a vacuum seal for extra stability. We wish him well!
The accident remains under investigation. See crash photos below and see new video of Ken’s rehabilitation.
