Zicam FDA Recall (DETAILS, PHOTOS)

Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Spray

Three Zicam products are being recalled by the Food & Drug Administration in a directive issued on Tuesday, June 16, 2009.  The zinc-containing cold remedy has been identified as the reason for 130 documented cases of loss of smell.

Some consumers have reported immediately suffered the inability to smell after just one dose while others didn’t have symptoms appear until multiple doses had been self-administered.

The products Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size have been ordered pulled from store shelves across the country and the FDA advises that consumers should discard any remaining product and not use it for any reason.

The FDA fears that the gel may be causing nasal nerve damage.  It has not yet been determined if the condition people are experiencing is permanent.  Consumers who are experiencing any adverse symptoms are asked to contact MedWatch either on line or at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Zicam is manufactured in Scottsdale, Arizona by Matrixx Initiatives.  They have 15 days to respond to the FDA allegations and have been ordered to hand over 800 user complaints that have not previously been made available to the FDA, according to their Compliance Director Deborah M. Autor.  In response, Matrixx issued this statement:

“No plaintiff has ever won a court case, because there is no known causal link between the use of Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and impairment of smell.”

Company stock plummeted by 56% on the Nasdaq before trading was halted.  It was the worst loss since its initial public offering in 1996, falling $10.68 and ending at $8.56.

Further recall information is available on the FDA website.

  1. Aha!! recommended to take by our doctor for a sinus infection rather than prescription.. It made my husband’s ears ring, face, neck and hands flush with heat, heart race.. he almost passed out on taking it once for sinus infection.

  2. Ridiculous.
Zicam is a school teacher’s friend in the winter months.

I wouldn’t be surprised if drug companies who sell antibiotics are behind this one.

While a cold and sinus infection are not the same, a cold gone unchecked can turn into a sinus infection often.

I think it is a scam on the part of the drug companies.

  3. Absolutely agree with teacher. This stuff does the trick and is harmless! Homeopathic remedies use the most miniscule of active ingredients. The less active ingredient the more potent the medicine.

Dee Cee, your husband was likely reacting to something else.

This is the big pharma control over the FDA because zycam actually cures the cold and is probably effective against Swine Flu which is likely on it’s way back with much more potency. The pharma’s are looking at massive profits as dying people use their products or as affraid people use their very deadly or destructive vaccines.

  4. I have used Zicam for years and the only effects have been positive. Zicam Gel Swabs, when used at the onset, can eliminate a cold or shorten its duration. I have never experienced any adverse side effects or loss of my sense of smell or taste. It’s truly the closest thing to the cure for the common cold. This makes me wonder if it’s a ploy perpetrated by greedy pharmaceutical companies to undercut a good thing, so they can make money selling inferior cold remedy products. Keep the people sick, and they’ll spend more money. Perhaps this is why they haven’t yet found a “cure” for other more serious diseases. They are making too much money on keeping us sick.

  5. Yup…the swine flu isnt killing enough people in the US, so they have to ban the only thing that will prevent the flu! Zicam!! I use it EVERYTIME I feel sick and not ONCE have I had a problem with my sense of smell! It works like a charm! I have a half box of the nasal swabs and also have the nasal spray…I’m gonna treat them like GOLD and only use it if I get very sick!

  6. Regarding homeopathic remedies “Take Iran’s People…” wrote : “The less active ingredient the more potent the medicine.” That IS the basic tenet of homeopathic medicine,

Logically, it follows that, to achieve MAXIMUM potency, use NO active ingredient at all. To treat a headache, whisper the word, ASPIRIN, over a glass of water, then pour it down the sink.
