Maria Belen Shapur is Mark Sanford Mistress (PHOTOS)

First couple of South Carolina - Jenny Sanford and Governor Mark Sanford

It has been revealed that the Argentine woman who has been involved in a year long affair with South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is Maria Belen Shapur.  She works for Bunge y Born, a multinational agribusiness and grain trading corporation and is fluent in English, Portuguese and Chinese.

Shapur and the governor had known each other for seven years before she became his mistress.  She is 43-years-old, has two sons and lives in a 14th floor apartment building in upscale Palermo District, near the Buenos Aires Zoo.

Sanford held a press conference yesterday, after discovering that the largest newspaper in South Carolina, The State, had incriminating evidence that he had just returned from a five day stay with his mistress in Argentina.  Additional proof of an extra-marital affair includes e-mails from Sanford to his lover.

Sanford is married to Jenny Sanford, a millionaire whose family owns Skil, the power tool company.  See the former Wall Street vice president with the couple’s four sons below, as well as alleged photos of Maria Belen Shapur.

  1. Typical politician scum…always looking out for their own interests. It doesn’t matter if they are democrat or republican, these people have no morals and their corrupt ways will lead to the end of this great nation of good, hard-working people! It really is just pathetic that these types of people have any type of power. So Sad.

  2. This photo is of Sanford with his wife at the White House on Feb 22, 2009.

  3. I’m disappointed – I thought at first (oh, happy thought!) that Sanford was fiddling about with a transvestite or transsexual. That would have been a lot of fun for me, as I’m of the “Destroy the Village in Order to Save It” school when it comes to my fellow Republicans.

Oh well. I still have hopes that Haley Barbour will get caught in a hotel room with some corn-fed boy from Des Moines …

  4. That’s what somebody got snatching facebook photos… but it’s possible that’s not her…

  5. I do not feel anything for Mark Sandford..nothing..I feel he is only sorry because he got caught up in his own selfishness and stupidity. I guess it isn’t so hopeless for him & his mistress now huh…now that the cat is out of the bag…
My heart does go our to his wife and their kids..What a shame and disgrace, yet another government official, has placed on his family…and with TAXPAYERS money! So, is he going to pay restitution for using taxpayers money?? we all know not..
Take him for all he’s worth Jenny and make a good life for you and your boys!! you already kow where he was on Father’s Day!

  6. sue: i can tell you are a man hating lesbian. it shows.

  7. We are a “sick” nation.
We do not care about political platform or capabilities of elected officials. All do we care is some scandalous facts that have nothing to do with real contribution and real value of this ot that official, but creates our “unhealthy” interest.
I want our politicians be intelligent, hard-working, contribute to well-being of State or Nation, and his private life is not an interes to me. It is for his close ones.
Not every private citizen is an official, but every official is also a private sitizen with inseparable rights to have a privacy.
His faith to his wife is only concern for her and his family- it is not your damn business.

How dare that newspaper was to steal (yes to steal) those tender e-mails and publish them. It is not him who make me feel disgrace, it is them who used those private letters and publish them for their financial benefit.

By the way, it is a confirmed fact that Adolf Hitler never chitted on his wife.

  8. Awww another republican who is for marriage values and anti gay laws ! how typical

  9. Sanford is no different than any other man. He just happens to be in the public eye. Men have a very hard time staying faithful – end of discussion. I’m guessing 70% of all men cheat – maybe only 20% are dumb enough to get caught. The odds are against you, if you’re a wife, just don’t be foolish enough to believe that YOUR husband isn’t one of the 70%.

  10. So, why are we always so quick to crucify these people? True enough, they are elected officials who are to have our best interest at heart and yet,at the end of the day, they really do bleed the same as us.I get the whole trust issue;personally and prossionally,we should want to and be able to trust them.Sanford and the rest of them are not really different then alot of other people who go through this in that the proverbial carrot is dangled before them and they take a bite. Not saying it’s ok but, welcome to the human race! They just have to pay for their sins out loud and under the microscope of the toughest critics in the world-the world. This will fade as has the Monica Lewinski and Bill Clintons of the world have so,just leave it alone and let this married couple and this family heal;whether they stay together or not, they need space.

  11. Reality Check, Women cheat too. “Gasp!’ The actual studies show that women cheat nearly as much as men. So, should men also assume that their wife is in that percentage that do cheat?

  12. I’ll never understand why people are so quick to judge. An affair like this is clearly not the Gov just looking for some quickie physically. If that is what he wanted there are a hundreds better solutions. I think its clear that he had an emotional connection with her and that what happened physically came after they’d developed a friendship. Why would this happen? Clearly, there was something lacking in his marriage and that is never just the fault of one person….its always a two-way deal. Does that justify an affair? No, but condemning him isn’t right either and unless one of us feels that we know exactly what it is like to walk in his shoes, then lets back off and let him and his family deal with it as best they can. To me, the only question the public should be concerned about is that he’s the Gov and he went AWOL (regardless of the reason) for five days.

  13. How can I say this? Having a year long affair is not a MISTAKE. It is a conscious decision to lie, cheat, hide, conceal, make excuses, cover up etc…over & over again. I feel for the four young boys mostly & of course their mother. If you can lie & cheat to the people that supposedly mean the most to you, don’t you think that carries over to the job as well? I believe it does.

  14. Mr.Sanford has become suddenly a human after crucifying Bill Clinton. No, falling in love is not a crime but it would be just moral to tell his wife and children about it.
By the way, God did not make up the marriage documents, and if he/she did, then he/she made us love outside the marriage , be faithful or unfaithful to our partner too –but declaration of moral righteousness after being caught, is onle acceptance under duress. Thak God, he could not declare”Holier than thou” any longer.

  15. What I find interesting is that some folks think there’s something fundamentally different about this than say, the average Springer show (or I guess Maury Povich these days).
If the players are under-educated and toeing the poverty line, they get exploited on a crappy syndicated “talk” show. But if they happen to be rich, educated, and/or powerful, well then the prestigious network news desks will do the exploiting.
It’s all the same, we all just feed off of it.
It gets used to justify “righteous anger” and the hateful comments that come with that, or the “better him than me” aspect of it for those who dont make it a moral issue.

  16. PATHETIC…ATLEAST CLINTON DIDN’T CRY!!!! OH MY GOODNESS IMAGINE IF THIS WEAK MAN BECAME OUR NEXT PREDSIDENT. HE WOULD RISK OUR NATIONAL SECURITY FOR THE DESIRE TO BE WITH HIS SOUL MATE. THE WAY MARK SANDFORD HANDLED THIS ORDEAL SHOWS HE IS AN UNSTABLE WIMP WITH POOR JUDGEMENT. I HOPE HIS WIFE CONSIDERS RUNNING FOR GOVENOR OR EVEN PRESIDENT..SHE WOULD GET MY VOTE.

  17. I just hate politicians –they are filthy slimy lying double talking sons of b*!~hes

  18. Actually i think this was my fault. No, I don’t know any of the people involved but I am a conservative. I’m not gay (at least I don’t think so). I’m not a perv (although I sneak a peak at porn once in a while). I’m against illegal immigration but sympathize with illegals who just want to make a better life for themselves and their families. I’m against abortion but believe in choice for those who are able to make an informed decision (even 13 y/o children who can’t decide which color socks to wear on any given day). Soooooo, I think this is my fault for having a neurotic need for puritanical piety which creates an atmosphere of hypocrisy. But then again, thinking this is somehow my fault would make me some sort of narcissist….OMG! I need my therapist……

  19. Seems that SC Governor Sanford had indeed told his wife by cell phone where he was going.

Through the crackly connection though, she heard “I’m going to hike the Appalachian Trail” when in fact he said “I’m going to hit some hot Argentinean tail”

  20. I hope if he ends up with Maria he lives with her in Argentina. Her kids are my kids age and they being
Latino may beat out my kids in getting accepted to the college of their choice. Also if Maria is given a green card what kind of message does that send….Engage in provocative talk with a homely old fart with money and political pull, seduce him into disinhibited wild sex that he can’t get enough of , tell him what you know he wants to hear..Presto!!..your out of the 14th floor apartment living the American dream!

  21. If the man weren’t so hypocritical , one could find it easier to forgive him. He thinks it’s a sin for homosexuals to love each other, but goes ahead and falls in love with a woman who is not his wife. Perhaps if he had shown more empathy for Gays, one could have more sympathy for him.
