Andrea McNulty, an employee of Harrah’s Casino in Reno, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Her lawyer Calvin R. Dunlap initiated a six count civil complaint on behalf of his client in Washloe County, Nevada on Friday.

The sexual assault allegation involved nine defendants, including Roethlisberger. His attorney Daniel Cornwell denied the charges and questioned the strength of McNulty’s case in light of the fact that she has not filed a criminal complaint. He issued the following statement:

“This weekend Andrea McNulty served Ben Roethlisberger with a civil complaint accusing him of sexually assaulting her in July 2008. Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone; especially Andrea McNulty. The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct. If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated.”

The suit involves six civil counts: assault, sexual assault and battery, false pretenses, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraud.

Roethlisberger signed a new eight-year contract in March 2008 that is reportedly worth $102 million. The 27-year-old says that he plans to retire as a Steeler. The athlete suffered a serious motorcycle accident in 2006 – see crash photo below.
