Whoopi Goldberg stepped in it Monday on The View, when she defended Roman Polanski, saying that “it wasn’t ‘rape’ rape” when he plied 13-year-old Samantha Gailey (now Geimer) with drugs and alcohol during a photo shoot at the home of actor Jack Nicholson, and performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy on her.
The 76-year-old director was apprehended in Zurich, Switzerland on Saturday, in response to a 31-year-old United States arrest warrant.
Polanski was arrested in Los Angeles in 1977, and charged with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor. He plead guilty to a lesser charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, and was sent to a medical prison facility for psychiatric evaluation. After 42 days he was released, and fled to France prior to sentencing.
While in Europe, Polanski continued to direct films, careful not to travel to countries likely to extradite him. He was arrested on Friday at the Zurich Airport upon arrival to Switzerland to pick up a lifetime achievement “Golden Icon Award” from the Zurich Film Festival.
On Monday, Whoopi defended Polanski, saying “I know it wasn’t ‘rape’ rape. I think it was something else, but I don’t believe it was ‘rape’ rape.”
Right Whoopi, it was CHILD rape.

Whoopi may not be a lawyer but she apparently plays one on TV. It’s nice to see all of these knowledgeable feminists stepping forward and showing compassion and concern for the REAL victim in this case – polanski. So if a member of the hollywood “elite” kills someone is not “murder’ murder” but just something like it? What a bunch of eliteist morons. Bring the “man” to justice.
I don’t think that Whoopi was in any way defending Polanski’s actions. She was putting the situation in a legal context. The fact is that he was originally charged with “rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor.” However under a plea bargain those charges were dropped in exchange for pleading guilty to “unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor”.
I have lost ALL respect for that woman, now.
