Controversial David Spade Chris Farley Commercial Ad (VIDEO)

David Spade Chris Farley controversial commercial

David Spade recently filmed a commercial for satellite company DirecTV.  The 30-second spot features Spade promoting the brand while sitting in a living room and presumably interacting with deceased actor Chris Farley, who is doing Tommy Boy shtick from his famous 1995 Fat Boy in a Little Coat.

Spade says, “Great, I’m here with tons of fun, but I could be at home with DirecTV.  It never gets old.”

Farley died of heart failure due to a drug overdoes in 1997.  Some have labeled the ad “bad advertising” and a “monstrous lack of judgment.”  Others are calling it “unfunny and not very clever.”

Entertainment Weekly straddled the fence and can’t quite decide whether it is “a sweet homage to a sexy moment or semi-disrespectful exploitation of the dead.”

DirecTV weighed in, saying they have taken their cues from the loved ones of Farley, who were consulted before the ad was filmed.  Jon Gieselman, senior vice president of advertising and public relations for DirecTV said, “They were on board with the concept from the very beginning and throughout the entire process and felt the spot was a great tribute to Chris.”

  1. I thought, Directv had better class.

  2. David Spade didn’t have the decency to go to Chris Farley’s funeral. He rode to fame on Chris Farley’s
back. Look at his career now, if you can find it. Maybe that is why he is trying to climb on Chris Farley’s back again. I been around the block quite a few times and I am pretty good at reading people, and I always felt that this guy was a real prick. What kind of a person exploits his dead friend for monetary gain by doing a commercial for some company trying to sell their HD T.V.’s? Advertising is a demeaning profession. One that brings out the worst in people. It’s on the same level as some asshole with a camera who stands outside of a restaurant for a couple of hours waiting for a chance to snap a picture of some famous person. And then when they finally come out it’s time to kiss their ass and tell them how good their looking. Snap a picture and sell it to some Hollywood rag. David Spade has no integrity and no class. I’ve never heard of someone doing this. It’s a new low in the entertainment business.
