Miley Cyrus Tattoo “Just Breathe” — What It Means
Miley Cyrus has taken much heat in the past few days for a tattoo she revealed under her left breast that reads “Just Breathe.”
Miley was romping on the beach in Miami wearing a pink bikini on Thursday when photogs first got a glimpse of the ink, setting off a storm of controversy.
“Don’t you have to be 18 to get a tattoo?” wrote Perez Hilton, while 56% of voters in a reader’s poll on PopEater were bothered that Miley has a tattoo at her age.
It turns out that the 17-year-old’s “Just Breathe” tat is the slogan for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and honors the memory of a close friend, Vanessa, who passed away due to Cystic Fibrosis three years ago. Miley also has the phrase on the neck of one of her guitars.

it’s a memory tattoo, doesn’t matter what age she is. it’s not a meaningless “oh look at me” thing. it’s to remember someone important. i see nothing wrong with this.
i like it. she is young but three years is a long time so obviously this tattoo really means something to her. her friend was someone special enough that she still thinks alot about her, enough to understand that this will be on her forever. its not like the tattoo is huge anyways. its very simple with alot of meaning behind it. at least it means something to HER.
I like her new tattoo and what it stands for. But that doesn’t change how I see her. I still don’t like her. Teehee.

Well, lets face it….. it’s over her heart. give the girl a break! clearly she had to have parental permission to get it, it will be with her all her life, just as her good friend will be in her memories all her life!
Miss Cyrus didn’t break the law, the tattoo artist did, according to the The Tattooing of Minors Act 1969. Also, up here in Canada, there is no law regarding age,but most shops won’t tattoo you if you are under 18, even if you have parental permission.
who cares how old she is. if the tat means something like that i think its a wonderful ideal i think she should be allowed to do what ever she wants with her body ITS HERS! i think that though i dont like her music, that doesnt mean i have to hate her because she is famous prolly makes her life suck ass because she cant do anything without people making a big deal over it. plus the whole thing is sweet and its over her heart saying that as its always gonna be there her friend will always be in her heart<3 so who cares reallly if it was anyone else this wouldnt be a big deal.

At least, she thought about it and it has a deeper meaning.
But at first, I thought it’s ‘Just Breathe’ by Anna Nalick’s Song ‘Breathe 2AM’ which Miley likes a lot.
But the deep reason for her tattoo is the better one:)
i’m turning 16 in a month & i definately love her tattoo not just because it looks cute , but it has a meaning to it which is the most important thing . she’s not doing it to look cute like most teenagers my age .
How provocative can she try to be? I mean, I get it, she lost her friend and a tattoo does really say something…despite her age…but did she really have to get it there? I mean?
It doesn’t change my opinion about her tattoo…it may have been for a good reason, but she’s TOO YOUNG. I waited until I was 18 for my first tattoo. Regardless of what anyone’s opinion is on that (if teens should be allowed to get tattoos) it is ILLEGAL. Even when I got my first tattoo at 18, I had thought about it for a year, and made the design six months in advance. I KNEW it was what I wanted. I question whether she thought that through with this one (namely, the exact placement is odd and doesn’t compliment her body)
* In my state, it is illegal to get a tattoo before 18. I’ve heard that in others this may vary, but I think it’s a bad idea for teens to get tattoos. Not that she’ll ever NOT feel the same about the phrase or her friend that passed, but she may not want to have that script on her in that location.
Knowing what I know now about her tatttoo, I feel completely different about the tattoo. Watching the video and how she became sensitive when speaking of her friend, Vanessa, about how strong she was, helped to open my mind. Now, everything makes sense, where she got her tattoo was near her heart. It’s very shameful how most people see wear her tattoo is at, and can only think negative, foolish things, but at the same time I suppose it’s only natural to think in that way.

and theres a girl in one of my classes with a tattoo and shes 15. Tattoos do ruin the body i think. But my boyfriend has many so they dont bother me. People dont worry about the normal 17 girl walking down the steet with a tramp stamp on her back, so why care about miley? Because shes no different.

She is not too young for a tattoo. She’s seventeen and you have to be eighteen. Anyway, I love that Miley got a tattoo to remember a bestfriend. She got the tattoo because it is perminent. Just like her friendship with Vanessa. Even though she died she’ll always be the with Miley. I think that’s a great reason to get a tattoo. Plus, it’s so cute. Also, people should not be worrying if she gets a tattoo right there, because, you can’t see it with clothing on, and because it’s close to her heart like Vanessa. So, chill out about the tattoo.

i find that sure she’s maybe a little young to have a tattoo but she got it for something that is apparently very close to her heart. So in that case I think that it is very heartfelt of her to do that so it doesn’t matter how young she is but that it’s something other then an act for attention

I got mine with the meaning of ‘no matter what hardships you go through in your life, be it heart break, losing a loved one, you will get past it if you just breathe.’ I think its awesome.
As for the placement, it would be weird if it was anywhere else.

i think that it shouldn’t matter what we think. Shes a normal person like the rest of us, just just gets to make a living out of what she loves to do and more power to her. When I was her age, I wanted a tattoo. But i couldn’t get the permission, not because of content but because of my age. She showed her family it meant that much to her that she obviously got the consent. Its not something that’s just a spur of the moment thing, it was thought out. I am one of those people where my tattoos have meaning. and she did the same so that shows that shes older than her physical age. Also, its her body. Its not ours so let her do what she wants with it. There are far worse things that she could be doing. The only people who remotely have a right to say anything are her family. And that’s the way that it should be.

Have any of you read the book Miles to Go? Because that’s where I learnt about Vanessa, the little girl with Cystic Fibrosis who she met at the hospital. Its not just a silly tattoo, it actually means something, and more importantly, it means a lot to her.

I think that if she wanted a tattoo then she should have waited until she was at least 18. I agree with getting tattoos period but She is setting an example for for children and I belive she should have thought long and hard about it before getting it. i mean she is wanting to get off the hannah montana show and star in other movies well that fine and well but I think she is heasded in the wrong direction because i read a commetn she had made when thy were talking about her tattoo and she said “She’s not a mother so why should she wonder what other kids are thinking about her” It does matter bc people are watching her and there is children that are watfching her every move and is looking up to her and if she makes a bad mistake then that child or person looking up to her may do the same . i think the tatoo is a great thing. i lost my cousin to CF on march 7, 2010, so i think the tatoo is amazing. I never liked Miley, but i now have a little respect for her.

I have an ‘in memory’ tattoo, that like Miley’s wouldn’t be known unless you know the reasoning behind it. The placement is probably because it’s over her heart, not what I would have (or indeed have) chosen, but it’s her choice.
It is not necessarily illegal that she had it done, it is entirely dependent on exactly where she got it done as to the laws there. Also many people don’t know the real laws, just the parlour’s version, like with piercings, there is absolutely no legal age limit (barring genital piercings) here in UK, yet everyone believes it’s 16 w/o consent. Not true.
I waited til I was more than legal for all of mine, but purely because I hadn’t found the right person to do it. I had the design down since I was 14.
If there is a deep meaning that is never going to change, then I think it’s fine. After all, at 17, she’s hardly clueless.

And to ‘True Love Hurts’ as much as these people are role models… there are far worse ones out there. She’s not doing drugs or rolling out of clubs drunk having punched someone. Indeed she’s also nowhere near as bad an example as politicians and the like (the real adults) are setting. Maybe someday one of these ‘celebs’ will jump off a cliff and natural selection will come into play.
It’s up to the parents to explain whether things are right or wrong, they shouldn’t blame their lack of parental responsibility on a 17 year old

Ok first of all she is 17 will be 18 soon anyways so why is everybody sitting here and saying that she should have waited. If she wanted something stupid like lips on her ass then sure wait till your 18 and don’t have to explain to your parents what you want. This is clearly something that has alot of meaning to her and that she thought long and hard about. If it was the bad as far as placement do you really think her parents would have signed off on it? Under 18 you can get it with a parents consent and the tattoo artist usually requires that they stay there while they are doing the tattoo. Second of all yes she is a role model but I’m sorry I don’t feel that she needs to completely put her life on hold and not do ANYTHING because she is in the spotlight as a celebrity. there are so many worse things that she could be doing and she isn’t!

I’m seventeen myself and just got a lyric tattoo in just about the same spot, which extends even further onto my ribs. It’s a great spot to get a tattoo, because as mentioned above, it goes unseen when you’re wearing clothes. Miley’s tattoo has meaning to her, and even if the meaning were to fade, it’s still cute – so why not? Is the leap from seventeen to eighteen really such a big deal? It’s not like you have an epiphany on your eighteenth birthday that makes you think clearer once you’re legal. Maturity comes to everyone at different stages, and if she’s sure she wants it, she shouldn’t be frowned upon for having it. Besides, with her money, if she changes her mind about it she can get it removed.

Famous teenagers are always judged harshly, and that isn’t fair because they are making all the same mistakes that normal, non-famous teenagers do! Several teenagers have tattoos. When you have a parent with you if you are not 18 then its okay. I don’t see a problem with it. Anyways she is her own person and she shouldn’t care what other people think about it. I like it and I think that she should get as many tats as she wants and people should realize its her body….not theirs.

Honestly its ridiculous for people to attack Miley like this over a tattoo. First of all, the fact that she was only 17 does not really matter. I’m sure mentally she is far beyond her years for the things she has had to go through being a celebrity. Secondly, it doesn’t matter if anyone approves or does not approve of the meaning. To her it is something speical and something she wanted on her body forever. Also she probably placed it there so it wasn’t visable during her job.
