Entertainer Marie Osmond's son Michael Blosil committed suicide on the evening of February 26. The 18-year-old suffered from severe depression and jumped from the 8th floor window of his high-rise apartment at 9:00 p.m. Friday night. The complex, known as The Met, is located at 950 South Flower Street in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 911 call at 9:26 p.m., and characterized the tragic event as an "extreme fall".
Marie's brother, Donny Osmond, confirmed this news to Entertainment Tonight. He said, "Please pray for my sister and her family." Marie also released a statement of her own: "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time."
Blosil, who was a student at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, left a suicide note indicating that because of his life-long battle with depression, he struggled with friendships and never felt that he fit in.
He sent a text message to a female friend and neighbor at 9:00 p.m., telling her that she would find a note addressed to her in his apartment. She headed there immediately and was let in by his roommates. They discovered the note, read it, and within minutes heard sirens and discovered that Blosil had plunged to his death.
Michael's roommates told police that Michael had been clean and sober in recent days but had been struggling with his mental health. The acquaintance also told officers that Blosil had tried to end his life once before.
The L.A. Coroner's office has initiated a death investigation and has scheduled an autopsy and toxicology testing.
Marie Osmond has fought her own battle with depression, suffering severe postpartum depression in 1999. She chronicled the struggle in her book "Behind the Smile".
In 2007, while Marie was a celebrity contestant on Dancing With The Stars, her then 16-year-old Michael entered a treatment facility. The reason behind the rehabilitation was never released but the event turned into a media firestorm when Marie was blindsided by Larry King during her guest appearance on his show.
Michael was one of eight children that Marie and her ex-husband Brian Blosil raised together. Marie gave birth to Stephen, Rachael and Matthew and adopted Jessica, Brandon, Brianna, Abigail and Michael. They range in age from 27 to 8.
Donny and Marie have canceled their Las Vegas show at the Flamingo until further notice.
