David Starr Jordan Middle School teacher Amy Beck, 33, presented herself at the Burbank Police Department on Monday, in the company of her attorney, and confessed to sex crimes with a minor. She was booked on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a child of 14.

She told police that she was overwhelmingly tormented by guilt over a relationship last year with one of her male students. Their affair reportedly spanned a period of six months. Police interviewed the teenage boy and he “confirmed that the acts did occur” between March and September 2009.

An arraignment was held in Superior Court on March 9, 2010. Prosecutors charged Beck with five counts, including four counts of unlawful sex with a person under 16 and one count of oral copulation with a person under 16. If convicted on all counts, she faces a possible seven years in state prison.

Burbank police spokesman Keith Sterling reported that bail had been set at $175,000. Her attorney Michael Williamson indicated that she didn’t plan to post bail and would remain in jail.

UPDATE: Beck pleaded no contest at a hearing on March 25, 2010. She will be sentenced at a hearing on May 7th. Her attorney indicates that she is expected to receive a sentence of two years in state prison.

He said, “You have a young lady who from the outset was very remorseful, and I think demonstrated the highest degree of remorse when she confessed, because she knew ahead of time she was going to state prison.”

The educator resigned her teaching position as a sixth-grade English and social studies teacher the week before her confession. School principal Sharon Cuseo said the 10 year employee gave no explanation for her sudden departure: “She’s a well respected and loved teacher. We’re all shocked.”

May 7, 2010 UPDATE: Beck received a 2 year state prison sentence today. With time served, she will be eligible for parole in 10 months. She has also been ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

Beck lives in Burbank with her husband, LAPD Officer Nathaniel M. Beck, and their three children.
