Foxy Knoxy portrayed by Hayden Panettiere …

The controversial made-for-television movie, Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT and be re-broadcast on Tuesday and Saturday on the Lifetime network. Hayden Panettiere will play murder suspect Amanda Knox.

The real-life Knox is an American student who was sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison for the grizzly 2007 murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercherphotos and crime details here.

The family of Knox, dubbed Foxy Knoxy by the press, tried desperately to stop the movie from being aired. Still claiming that she is innocent, the prison inmate’s legal team is currently working through the appeal process. They were successful in getting the network to remove the bloody murder scene — details they vehemently claim are purely fictitious.

In preparation for the role, Panetteire, 21, spent five weeks reading through trial transcripts. She admits that the family was not involved in script development.

She said: “The audience can make up their own minds. Regardless of what happened, this young girl had dreams and aspirations. She wasn’t a malicious girl. My job was to play her as innocent as I could.”
