Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, wife of actor Michael Douglas, recently underwent five days of inpatient treatment for Bipolar II Disorder at Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut.

In a released statement, her publicist revealed: “After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II Disorder. She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”

The manic-depressive illness is known for the unusual shifts in mood and energy. Manic episodes, an overly excited or joyful state, can be followed by a depressive episode, characterized as unusual sadness or hopelessness.

Zeta-Jones experienced an unusually bizarre episode involving the paparazzi in London six weeks ago, several hours after Prince Charles bestowed upon her the coveted Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In hindsight, it seems likely her over-reaction to the situation may well have been caused by her disorder.

The actress has turned down several movie roles over the past year in order to be near her husband, who has been receiving treatment for throat cancer.

Zeta-Jones and Douglas married in 2000. They have two children: Dylan and Carys. See their recent family adventures at Disney World here.
