The Top 5 American Idol contestants were tasked with double duty last night, having to perform a current song and then a classic. Their mentor this week was country crooner Sheryl Crow.

James Durbin performed Closer to the Edge and Without You, bursting into a flood of tears and sobs during the second song.

Jacob Lusk took on No Air and Love Hurts. Randy thought that he probably now holds the record for hitting the highest note in American Idol history.

Idol contender Lauren Alaina performed Carrie Underwood’s Flat on the Floor, followed by Unchained Melody.

Country boy Scotty McCreery had his way with a Montgomery Gentry tune Gone, and then tried his hand at Brenda Lee’s Always on My Mind. Sheryl Crow said: “I love Scotty. I can’t wait until he gets to Nashville so that we can do something together.”

Haley Reinhart took a risk with Lady Gaga’s not yet released You and I, that the judges thought was too much of an unknown song to resonate with viewers. She knocked her second performance out of the ball park with The House of the Rising Sun. The panel of judges pronounced it the song of the night.

Who will go home on Thursday night, during the elimination show? Jacob Lusk has been in the bottom three any number of times. Could this be the end of the line for him?
