Three-time surfing champion Andy Irons died in November 2010 from a combination of a heart attack and drugs, according to the autopsy report.

The 32-year-old athlete’s body was discovered in a Dallas hotel room on November 2, 2010 – report here.

The details of the official autopsy results were released by a publicist on behalf of Irons’ family and the attending forensic pathologist, Dr. Vincent Di Maio.

The primary cause of death was listed as a heart attack related to coronary artery disease. Irons showed evidence of “hardening of the arteries”, including a 70-80 percent narrowing of his anterior descending coronary artery — a very severe situation that is commonly associated with sudden death.

A secondary factor contributing to death was an “acute mixed drug ingestion.” Toxicology reports indicate that cocaine and methamphetamine were present in Irons’ system.

Police discovered Alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug, Zolpidem, a sleep aid, and methadone tablets in Irons’ hotel room.

In a prepared statement, family members disclosed that Irons “used various medications to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia — a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by family doctor at age 18. This was when Andy first began experiencing episodes of manic highs and depressive lows.”

“The family believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance and tended to blame his mood swings on himself and his own weaknesses, choosing to self-medicate with recreational drugs.”

Prior to his death, Irons recorded a video to explain why he surfed. Check it out below:
