New York socialite Beata Boman was arrested and charged with shoplifting an $11,500 scarf from the trendy Connecticut shop Richards of Greenwich on Tuesday.

Police caught up with the suspect at a nearby Starbucks. Officers questioned her about the reported theft and she readily acknowledged that she had taken the fur-lined scarf but was planning to return it.

The 38-year-old, who describes herself as a Polish-born former model and fashion designer, was charged with first-degree larceny and released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Her attorney Mark Sherman attempted to do damage control with a statement to the Greenwich Times: “Anybody who knows Beata knows she has no need and no reason to steal anything. This was a mistake, plain and simple. There was no crime here and there was no intent to steal the scarf.”

Boman will have an opportunity to tell it to the judge on Monday, when she appears in Stamford Superior Court.

The socialite, who runs with the New York elite crowd, made headlines in 2008 when she hooked up with Prince Andrew in St. Tropez .
