Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO who stepped down on August 24, 2011 due to failing health, has died in California. He was 56.
Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 with Steve Wozniak and marketed the first personal computer, the Apple II. He went on to develop the iMac, iPod, iPad, and iPhone.
Apple Board issued a statement: “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”
Jobs suffered a rare and unusual form of pancreatic cancer in 2004, and underwent a liver transplant in 2009. After several leaves of absence, Jobs announced that he was stepping down:
“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”
Jobs, who practiced Buddhism, had a net worth estimated at $8.3 billion in 2011. He is survived by his wife Laurene Powell Jobs, their four children, and his sister Mona Simpson.
