Photos of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s honeymoon have surfaced much to the chagrin of the couple and the Palace.

Woman’s Day magazine of Australia released more than a dozen photos, which show the newlyweds strolling on the beach in Seychelles’ North Island holding hands. William is wearing a pair of board shorts, and Kate is wearing a black bikini.

It is unclear why it took the pictures 14 months to surface, but Tom Sykes of The Daily Beast speculates that since the media largely promised to respect the couple’s wishes for privacy with a “blackout” during their 10-day honeymoon, whoever commissioned the photos had second thoughts about alienating the Palace, forcing the photographer to wait out an exclusivity period before selling them.

It is suspected that UK tabloids and photo agencies could be to blame for tipping off the photographer.

Painstaking efforts went into protecting the Royal couple’s request for privacy with coast guard patrols and tight security surrounding their $5000 a night bungalow.

Woman’s Day hasn’t confirmed details on how they obtained the photos or for how much, but celebrity business journalist Jo Piazza believes it could have been a major payday for the anonymous photographer. “Any shot of them on their honeymoon was going to go for at least half a million but because Kate is in a bikini I would estimate that this is a million dollar shot,” says Piazza.

The Royal Family is said to be upset about the leak. A St. James’ Palace spokesperson issued a statement, saying, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s honeymoon was obviously a private occasion, and we would ask people to respect their privacy.”
