Mariah Carey is reportedly close to signing a $17 million deal to become a judge on season twelve of ‘American Idol.’

With Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler out, producers are scrambling to fill the void with talent capable of renewing interest in a show that appears to have run its course.

When Nick Cannon was asked recently about the possibility of his wife taking a judges spot, he remarked, “Idol can’t afford Mariah Carey.”

The host of ‘America’s Got Talent’ first suggested, “If they gave JLo $20 million, they might have to double that!”

He has since upped the ante: “They want her, I know that… but I ain’t letting her outta the house for less than $100 million.  They’ve got to step up if they want that.  She’s the biggest singer-songwriter in the history of music; that’s worth something.”

FOX knows they need to jump star the show that was snubbed earlier this week when the Emmy nomination were announced.

After eleven seasons it remains to be seen whether the show is simply past its prime or can still spring back with the help of Mariah.  Yes? No? Maybe?
