Good Morning America host Robin Roberts has announced that she will begin her medical leave from the show on Friday.

She was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) earlier this year and is ready to undergo a lifesaving bone marrow procedure.

Roberts, 51, explained what will happen after she checks into the hospital next Tuesday, “I’ll begin the process. It still takes about 10 days after being admitted because there are some things you have to go through before the transplant actually occurs.”

The GMA host talked about her donor — sister Sally, “She is a perfect match and she’s been spending a lot of time with me. She’s been taking shots to help her prepare.”

During Roberts’ absence the show has lined up a group of celebrities to step in for guest stints.

We wish Robin a successful surgery and speedy recovery.
