Kansas City Chiefs coaches, players and fans are reeling after one of their own, NFL linebacker Jovan Belcher, murdered his girlfriend in front of her mother and killed himself in front of team coaches.
The 25-year-old athlete shot Kasandra Perkins, 22, at her residence at 8:00 a.m. central time. She was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Their infant daughter, born in September, was in the home with Perkins' mother at the time of the shooting but was not harmed.
Belcher then drove to Arrowhead Stadium practice facility where he exchanged words with GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel in the parking lot before putting a gun to his own head and pulling the trigger as police arrived on the scene.
The team will go forward with a noon game at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, against the Carolina Panthers.
Belcher signed as a free agent with Kansas City in 2009 and has remained active on their roster for the past four years, with 10 starts this season.
