‘Side Effects’ is a gripping psychological thriller featuring an all-star cast that is guaranteed to keep movie-goers on the edge of their seats.
Produced by director Steven Soderbergh, the provocative tale comes to life on the big screen with high-profile actors Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Channing Tatum.
The film weaves the story of Emily and Martin Taylor (Mara and Channing), a successful New York couple who had an idyllic life together before he was convicted of a crime.
Emily’s world is turned upside down when she is prescribed a new drug Ablixa by her psychiatrist (Law), to combat the anxiety caused by her husband’s upcoming release from prison.
At first it appears the drug is working wonders. Emily has regained her energy, is able to sleep and is beginning to enjoy a renewed sex life with her husband. He goes so far as to call her medication “a miracle drug” after a romp in the sack.
Then it all goes terribly wrong when strange side effects take Emily down a murderous path and it doesn’t take long for detectives to determine she may have been involved.
They discover that Emily, troubled and pharmacologically dependent, has been manipulated by Dr. Jonathan Banks into a drug-fueled love triangle and the commission of a murder … Martin’s perhaps? That isn’t clear but it seems to make the most sense.
As the slow-burn thriller evolves, it is revealed that Emily’s therapist drew her into an unscrupulous relationship. We are even shown photo evidence of a scantily clad Emily on a bed.
Helping to unravel the situation is Catherine Zeta-Jones’ character Dr. Erica Siebert, who appears to have been burned in the past by Law’s character and doesn’t trust him.
Throughout the trailer we see a series of buzz phrases: Beneath the Desire, Behind the Truth, No Secret is Safe. Compelling … absolutely.
The film is rated R for sexuality, nudity, violence and language. ‘Side Effects’ will be released in U.S. theaters on February, 8, 2013.
