New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player with the Boston Bandits. He was also cut by his New England team.

The NFL player was handcuffed at his $1.3 million North Attleborough, Massachusetts residence and led away by detectives. His lawyer’s request for bail was denied by a judge, pending further proceedings.

Hernandez and two friends reportedly picked up Lloyd at his home at 2:30 a.m. on June 17 with the intention of getting even with him for a falling out that occurred three days earlier when the group hit the Boston nightclub scene.

Surveillance footage at the home of Hernandez showed him leaving the premises with a gun the same night that the murder took place.

According to the prosecutor, a final text message sent from Lloyd to his sister minutes before his presumed death asked, “Did you see who I am with? NFL. Just so you know.”

Hernandez lives with his fiancee and their 8-month-old baby.
