Halle Berry has been cast as an astronaut in the upcoming CBS television drama series ‘Extant,’ slated to air next summer.

CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said, “Berry is the type of actress you dream of collaborating with for an event project such as ‘Extant.”

Berry, 47, received a huge vote of confidence from the CBS network, who gave the green light to a 13-episode straight-to-series order, bypassing the pilot stage.

The futuristic thriller will feature her character as a astronaut returning home to her family after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that change the course of human history. Executive producing the project is Steven Spielberg.

The pregnant actress and her French husband Olivier Martinez are anxiously awaiting the birth of a baby boy in early October. After a short maternity break, the Academy Award-winning actress will be tasked with getting back into shape in order to begin filming the television series.

Halle is already mother to a 5-year-old daughter, Nahla, who was born during her 2005-2010 relationship with French Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. The couple settled a long standing custody dispute in late November 2012, a week after Olivier Martinez viciously assaulted Aubry in Berry’s driveway on Thanksgiving morning.

Halle, who normally gravitates to big screen roles, acknowledged, “I’m always on the lookout for amazing roles. When the material is strong, it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium.”
