Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, announced Monday morning that she has decided to drop out of the Republican Wyoming Senate primary.

Citing unspecified health issues that she categorized as "serious," Liz Cheney added, "My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority."

Cheney, 47, uprooted the family from Virginia to the Jackson Hole area in 2012 to run for the seat.  Her decision to try to replace Republican incumbent Senate veteran Michael B. Enzi angered many within the party.  Enzi supporters labeled her a "carpetbagger and opportunist."

Dick Cheney's eldest daughter caused a major rift within the family when she announced in November that she opposes gay marriage.  This revelation sparked a public war of words with her sister, Mary Cheney, a lesbian who married her same-sex partner Heather Poe.

The sisters have not spoken for months and did not spend the holidays together, according to the New York Times.  Their father helped Liz to raise $1 million for her campaign that financed two television ads that played up her family's deep roots in Wyoming.
