Hilary Duff and her husband Mike Comrie announced through her rep that they have decided to separate after three years of marriage.
The statement read, "The couple have mutually decided on an amicable separation. They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."
The high profile couple met when the Canadian athlete was at the height of his pro hockey career and wed in August 2010. Their only child, son Luca Cruz, is 21-month-old.
The former Pittsburgh Penguin was forced to retire on February 13, 2012 after undergoing hip surgery for the third time. The abrupt end of his pro career undoubtedly factored into increased tensions in his home life.
A friend of the couple acknowledges that Duff and Comrie tried couples therapy when they realized they were drifting apart but were not able to resolve their problems.
She tweeted Friday afternoon, "Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness and well wishes. Not an easy day but we're getting thru it together."
The actress went back to work to film 'Flock of Dudes' in 2013 after a long hiatus. She admits, "I stayed away for three and a half years. I met my husband and I got married. Taking the time to learn who I am and who I want to be really helped. Now I'm ready to jump back in."
