Kate Gosselin and her twin daughters Mady and Cara, 13, appeared Thursday on the TODAY Show in what turned out to be a decidedly painful few minutes for the former reality show family members.

The NBC morning show billed the interview as an opportunity for the Gosselin teens to set the record straight regarding allegations made by their father and others, suggesting that they were harmed by their time spent in front of the TLC cameras while filming ‘Kate Plus 8.’

Unfortunately, it turns out Jon’s claim that their stint on reality television was detrimental to his kids, may not be so far off the mark after all.

Co-host Savannah Guthrie couldn’t get either of Kate’s kids to respond to a number of questions. Their frustrated mother interjected, “I don’t want to speak for them but, Mady go ahead. Say the things that you said in PEOPLE magazine, that years later you’re good, you’re fine. Go for it, it’s your chance.”

Mady responded, “No. You just said it.”

Kate immediately began damage control after the show, tweeting: “Thanks to @TODAY show for having Cara, Mady and me on the show today! First live interview can render even the gabbiest girls speechless. I’m proud of them, taking this opp! They were so excited but caught off guard by live TV!”

Their dad told TMZ that he felt terrible for his daughters for having to appear on the TODAY show with Kate this morning. He characterized the interview as “horrible” to watch and added, “I’m going to handle this as a family matter. I don’t want to affect the children anymore.”
