David Beckham revealed his plan to buy into a Major League Soccer team in Miami during a press conference Wednsesday at Perez Art Museum.

The Miami Fusion, Miami’s last pro soccer team, folded in 2001.

“I’m going to work hard for this city and this team,” said Beckham, who was joined by MLS commissioner Don Garber and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giminez. “Everything I do is personal, and I want to make this my team.”

Plans include finding a site downtown to build a stadium. “Soccer fans love to walk to games,” said Beckham. “That’s part of the tradition.”

“Miami is a vibrant city, a city with a lot of passion,” Beckham said. “It’s ready for football, for soccer. And I’m looking forward to spending a lot more time here.”
