No one expected anything newsworthy to come out of the Hollywood Film Awards, but Johnny Depp’s drunk speech went instantly viral for good reason:

It was exactly the kind of embarrassing celebrity moment that makes us peasants feel better about our own awkward lives.

But after the laughter died down, the clip was more closely scrutinized and concerns were raised.

Many decided that the incident served as evidence of Depp’s drinking problem.

There were rumors that his boozing was driving Amber Heard away, and that the actress had threatened to call of their engagement if Depp didn’t kick the sauce.

Now it looks as though there may have been some truth to those rumors, as sources say Depp’s quit drinking with the help of a “sober companion,” and an in-home treatment program.

“After realizing that he clearly had an issue, Johnny has been seen traveling with a companion to encourage his sobriety,” an insider tells Radar Online. “Johnny’s problem has always been moderation. He couldn’t have just one.”

Depp is reportedly so thoroughly committed to the program that he skipped the recent premiere of his new film Into The Woods.

“His absence from Into The Woods raised a lot of questions,” the source says, adding that producers permitted Johnny to bow out of all promotional obligations in order to focus on his sobriety.

So it sounds like the days of drunken Depp are done. The only question is: did he sober in time to save his relationship?
