Jean Stapleton of ‘All in the Family’ fame died of natural causes at her home in New York City on Friday. She was 90.

The comedic actress was best known for her role as Edith Bunker, the naive and sometimes ditzy wife of Archie, in Norman Lear’s popular 70’s sitcom that earned her three Emmys and two Golden Globes.

The show covered the previously tabu issues of breast cancer, menopause and sexual anxiety with humor and compassion.

Stapleton reflected in later years, “There’s nothing like humor to burst what seems like an enormous problem. Humor reduces it to nothing and wipes it out. That’s what humor does. That was a great part of that show in terms of every issue.”

Her co-stars were Carroll O’Connor (1924-2001), Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner.

Jean got her start on Broadway in the 40’s in the hit musicals ‘Damn Yankees,’ ‘Funny Girl,’ and ‘Bells Are Ringing.’ Her early television roles included appearances on ‘Dr. Kildare,’ ‘The Patty Duke Show,’ ‘Car 54 Where Are You?’ and ‘Dennis the Menace.’

The veteran actress is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, William Putch (1924-19830). She is survived by two children: director John Putch and actress Pamela Putch.
