Barbara Walters: Michelle & Barack Obama Interview

Barbara Walters sat down with Michelle Obama and President-elect Barack Obama to tape an hour long interview that aired on ABC on Wednesday night. The special touched on the transition, the economy, foreign policy and how the family will cope with the major changes to their lives.

Walters found the couple to be “cute” and “very funny”. Barack paused during the interview to point out to his wife that she had lipstick on her teeth. Michelle and Barack both insist the girls will be in charge of making their own beds and cleaning their rooms at the White House, as well as walking their new dog and scooping the resultant ‘doggy doo’.

The First Pregnant Man is Pregnant Again!

Barbara Walters revealed on The View today that Thomas Beatie, first man to ever have a baby, was indeed pregnant again. Beatie and his wife Nancy, who is not able to conceive a child because of a hysterectomy, are expecting their second child in June.

Walters was promoting her special What Is a Man, What Is a Woman? Journey of a Pregnant Man on her daytime talk show when she spilled the news to America about Thomas and told the audience that she was floored by the news.

Thomas gave birth to daughter Sarah in June and opened up to People magazine about his journey. The interview with Walters will be their first since Sarah was born.

It was nearly a free-for-all during the opening segment of the ABC morning talk show The View on Wednesday. As is their normal practice, the ladies chimed in on some hot topics and politics was at the forefront. Behar wanted to discuss Katie Couric’s latest interview with Sarah Palin and things quickly got heated.

Palin made a stump speech earlier this week and she got a big laugh when she remarked that she’s been hearing about 65 year old Joe Biden’s Senate speeches since she was in 2nd grade. Couric brought up the sound bite during their interview and asked, “When you have a 72 year old running mate isn’t that a risky thing to say?” Palin replied, “Oh no, it’s not anything negative.”

Joy Behar was livid about the way Palin tried to insinuate that she hadn’t meant it as a slight against Biden. She blurted, “The fact that she’s so dumb as to say”…. which brought a host of wow’s and whoa’s from the other View co-hosts and studio audience. She then tempered her words and corrected, “Politically not astute, let’s put it that way.”

That was just the beginning. Barbara Walters turned on Elisabeth Hasselbeck in an uncharacteristic manner. Whoopi Goldberg did what she does best – she demanded to be heard and started out with her ever popular statement “the truth is”. Who knew she was the truth squad. With 34 days to go until election day, we need to brace ourselves because it’s starting to get really, really ugly.

This is awesome! First Barbara Walters comes clean and confesses to a love affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke and now she is squealing about her former co-hosts on The View, Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones. Barbara is currently making her rounds to promote her memoir, Audition. She is one smart cookie and will surely make it a best selling book.

During her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Barbara was critical of the way Star Jones kept secret the fact that she had undergone surgery in order to lose a considerable amount of weight. Walter’s acknowledges that Star wanted everyone to believe that her success with her transformed shape was due to Pilates and portion control.

We had to lie on the set everyday, she was our colleague and she really did not want us to out her…We cared about her, and we thought we owed her.”

When Rosie O’Donnell was brought up, Walters showed affection toward the former outspoken co-host and even went as far as to say she’s an “enormous talent” but that she had emotional issues that made their relationship strained at times.

“If I didn’t do what she hoped I’d do, she felt I’d abandoned her, ” said Walter’s in reference to the fight between Donald Trump and Rosie. Walters said that at the time the story hit the media she was in the Caribbean with Judge Judy. Barbara said:

She had always driven the bus and she could not just ride the bus.”

Now it will be interesting to see if either one of the ex co-hosts will come forward and do a little dishing of their own on Barbara. With Elizabeth still part of the show, it is unlikely we will be treated to any bashing where she is concerned.

Congratulations Ms. Walters. You’ve included all of the ingredients necessary to ensure brisk sales. We smell success.

Barbara Walters sat down with Oprah Winfrey and spilled the beans…literally. Walters admitted to having an affair with Senator Edward Brooke in the 1970’s. Why after keeping this secret for three decades would she come clean now? The reason is that she is promoting her memoir Audition on the Oprah Show.

Walters, 78, has lived a very large life and says that it is was very exciting to be in Washington and that she was infatuated with Brooke. The affair lasted two years and the secret was apparently safe until Walters decided to let Pandora out of her box.

Barbara said that it was a well guarded secret at the time because it would have meant the end of both of their high profile careers had the news become public. Brooke was married at the time of the affair. Walters marriage to Lee Guber ended in December 1976 and she reports that the affair ended prior to Brooke losing his reelection bid in 1978.

Walters indicates she found Brooke to be brilliant and exciting. The couple finally ended the affair out of fear of discovery. She indicates that there were a few people aware of the situation and she received more than one phone call asking her to end the relationship before the situation became public knowledge.

Walters seems like a private person, making this revelation a little out of character. It should be interesting to hear what she has to say on the subject. No doubt the women on The View will weigh in, although they will be wearing kid gloves. Oprah may not be quite as kind.
