Brooke Shields Naked Photo Banned From Art Exhibit

Metropolitan police in London have removed a nude childhood photo of actress Brooke Shields, entitled Spiritual America, from an art exhibit called Pop Life: Art in A Material World at the Tate Modern.

Artist Richard Prince’s image is of a Garry Gross photo taken in 1975, and commissioned by Teri Shields when her daughter was 10-years-old. The shot, intended to enhance the child’s career, showed her standing in a bathtub while wearing heavy makeup, with her skin oiled up and in a provocative pose.

London police were alerted by Kidscape, a group that campaigns against child abuse in the U.K. The group feared that the exhibit could be a “magnet” for pedophiles.

Photographer Gross, 71, said he never considered the photo pornographic but acknowledges that “she was supposed to look like a sexy woman.” He went on to say, “The photo has been infamous from the day I took it and I intended it to be.”

Shields career was managed by her mother, who allowed her to play a child who lived in a brothel in the 1978 film Pretty Baby, which included several nude scenes. She was eleven when the movie was filmed. Other provocative films included Wanda Nevada and Blue Lagoon.

Brooke was the youngest model to ever appear on the cover of Vogue at age 14 and also appeared that same year in a controversial print and TV ad for Calvin Klein jeans, with the tag line “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvin’s? Nothing.”

Actress, wife and mother of two beautiful daughters, Brooke Shields became a star at a very young age and spoke about her one health regret and the pressure of self image in a recent Q&A on living.health.com website.

“Not learning to love the way I looked earlier. And I think I would have had sex a lot earlier! (Laughs.) I think I would have lost my virginity earlier than I did at 22. I had the public and all this pressure, and I wish I had just gotten it over with in the beginning when it was sort of OK. I think I would have been way more in touch with myself. I think I wouldn’t have had issues with weight –I carried this protective 20 pounds (in college). It was all connected. And to me, that’s a health regret.”

The actress has since gotten in touch with who she is. A strong advocate on many fronts, she has taken up the cause of educating women about postpartum depression. Based upon Brooke’s early experiences and lessons learned, she is able to be a wonderful role model for her daughters, and will likely help them to become strong and secure young women.

Brooke Shields has been besieged by paparazzi for the past two weeks following her casual involvement in an altercation that landed Kiefer Sutherland in hot water with police.

Shields has reported that she happened to be near Sutherland when she was accidentally jostled by Jack McCollough. A very inebriated Kiefer proceeded to break the famed designer’s nose, in a misguided attempt to defend Brooke’s honor.

Shields has since provided sound bites to numerous media outlets, expressing her disbelief that she is now being stalked by the press over something that was really never her deal to begin with.

A heartbreaking blow to the actress was the discovery that her 75 year old mother Teri Shields, who is being cared for at an Old Tarpan, New Jersey nursing home because of dementia, has now been drawn into the tabloid fray.

Old Tarpan Police Department Capt. Thomas Shine notified Shields that they were summoned to the nursing home at 3:00 p.m. Thursday to look for Teri Shields. The home had allowed two men, reportedly freelancing for the National Enquirer, to check her out of their facility. When she had been absent for an extended period of time, they grew concerned and phoned for police assistance in locating her.

Teri Shields was found next door at a restaurant, but Brooke has come to understand that the reporters drove her around town while trying to solicit information that they could use for a tabloid story. Police found her in the company of one man, and walked her back to the assisted living facility. They questioned the freelance reporter about the incident, though his photographer had already left the scene.

Brooke Shields is reportedly upset with the care facility that she entrusted with her mother’s care and infuriated by the actions of the tabloid reporter. It seems likely legal action will be forthcoming in this very unfortunate incident.

Lipstick Jungle NOT Canceled Says NBC

NBC Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman says that Lipstick Jungle may have new life with its recent move to the Friday night lineup. Late last week rumors were running rampant that the show, in it’s first season, had breathed its last. Not so.

Lipstick Jungle is a comedy drama about three high powered women, played by Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price. Filmed in New York City, the network has aired nine or the first seasons 13 episodes. The remaining four shows will definitely air, with the hope that if they see viewership growth more episodes will be ordered and the crew can go back into production.

The show actually picked up 50 percent more viewers this past Friday when delayed viewing (DVR’s and other devices) was included in the measuring equation. The network also received an outpouring of support from fans. Both are promising 11th hour developments.

Brooke Shields had this to say when questioned over the weekend: “Our bosses are saying, ‘You’re not canceled, don’t worry. We’re just trying to figure out how to make this make sense.’ I mean, we’re basically No. 1 if you look at DVR. And you look at all that. So the public IS watching it.”

The Lipstick Jungle premiere party was hosted by Maybelline and looking at the pictures of Brooke Shields, it’s not hard to see that she’s the belle of the ball. Is it possible that she gets better looking by the minute?

The forty-three years old actress has two daughters, Rowan Frances and Grier Hammond with her television writer husband of 7 years, Chris Henchy. Obviously being married and a mommy are a comfortable fit for Shields.

Brooke plays Wendy Healy on the hit show Lipstick Jungle. You can catch the NBC show on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. central time. Shields has a role in “Hannah Montana: The Movie” which is scheduled for 2009 release.

Brooke Shields, 42, is very excited about her latest venture on NBC. The new dramatic comedy, Lipstick Jungle, premiere’s next week. The plot lines has several modern New York career women supporting each other. She is also featured on the cover of this week’s Parade magazine, which will appear as a supplement in Sunday papers across the country.

Shields is no stranger to the ways of Hollywood. She has traveled that road since she was a young child model. We’ve seen her career ebb and flow. Her first major film role was in the controversial movie Pretty Baby. The media came down heavily on Shield’s mother for allowing her 12 year old daughter to be involved in child pornography.

In the early 1980’s she had roles in The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love. She won The People’s Choice Award for Favorite Young Performer in four consecutive years from 1981-1984. Shields put her career on hold in order to attend Princeton University. She graduated in 1987 with a degree in French Literature.

The actress had several career stalls along the way. She cited her 6 foot height as a stumbling block with many leading men being of shorter stature. She had a two year marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi from 1997-1999 which was annulled. She has been married to television writer Chris Henchy since 2001. The couple have two young daughters.

Shields went public after the birth of her first daughter, Rowan, with the fact that she had suffered from postpartum depression. Tom Cruise attacked the actress during an interview on NBC with Matt Lauer. Public sentiment went with Shield’s and cast Cruise as the enemy. Ironically, both couples eventually had babies born on the same day, in the same hospital. Their young daughters, Suri Cruise and Grier Henchy, are now nearly 2 years old. Cruise visited Shield’s at her home and apologized for his personal attack on her. They made peace that day and the two families have become close friends.

Brooke Shields and the rest of the Henchy family recently enjoyed some time at a Brentwood, California playground and dog park. Our featured photo shows the actress in a loving moment with daughter Grier, 1. They were accompanied on their outing by husband Chris Henchy and big sister Rowan, 3.

Shields has enjoyed success as a model, actress and author. Her book, Down Came the Rain, detailed her struggle with postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. She made additional news when Tom Cruise attacked her decision to take medication for the ailment. The celebrities eventually reconciled and the Cruise and Henchy families have become good friends.

Shields is currently filming a new NBC comedy-drama Lipstick Jungle, which is set to premiere on February 7, 2008. The hour long series will tell the story of three high powered friends who are at the top of their career game. Shields will play the role of Wendy, a movie executive.
